The armour ribs were put in place to stop fragment and spall from hitting optics and sensitive equipment outside the tank, like a person poking their head out. They had minimal affect on projectiles, ap or heat. The reason why warthunder models them this way is because the game is unrealistic and thinks that the extra 40mm sticking out makes the plate 40mm thicker as a whole if you hit them.
@@JustMinna that is correct. But in the video he also brings up that the core was protected by a soft shell to prevent shattering. And in the simulation you can clearly see that the core doesn't shatter until it bounces off the main plate, where it would shatter even without ribs. The simulation does showcase very clearly how the 103's armour is made to work. It is build with the crew very much in mind. The crew are all situated at the back of the tank, not where the shells impact. If a person sat on the other side of that plate in the simulation they would die by spalling, but instead there is only engine there. The ribs may have some effect on armour protection but not enough to be some x factor. Run that simulation again without ribs and the shell will most likely bounce right off again, leaving maybe a slightly deeper dent or gash than in the first one. I used to like the prototype more since the flat high angled armor got more shells to bounce. Especially HEAT-FS that often get detonated on those strips and disable your engine/transmission -> you dead 6/10 times. But maybe it’s better against the new tungsten core nerf in sky guardian.
Those things can do a lot of things like stopping shrapnel from bouncing upwards and providing some grip for the crew so they don't slip off. I mean it when I say this, Swedish military engineering is in a completely different world.
