The whistle is caused by specialized feathers on the wings which vibrate during flight making the sound. Another thing that is important to note, the drakes will hold that eclipse plumage for the first winter and through the following breeding season. They don't gain their full color until their second fall/winter.
Teal do the same..
Have you guys ever tried open water layout hunting? It's something every duck hunter should experience. Come up to the great lakes with an outfitter just once...
Thanks Elliot for showing this one. Josh was on Key with this Hunt enjoyed it.
Maybe Josh will slowly turn into James Bond shooting all those Goldeneye
Use long lines a lot here in Michigan on big water later in the season for divers
Great video definitely some nice shooting
Love those divers I’m a equal opportunity duck hunter-good video
I love to hunt divers at the lakes here in Washington we get tons of mixed bags of divers and mallards
It's their wing beats. Hunt lake Michigan alot you never get tired of that sound late in the season
Excelentes lances de cazerias amigos saludos chebres caza 👌👍
Works awesome for divers here. Just put a little pod at the end right in front of you, and they just come straight up the line and either pop a squat or veer off right over the pod. It's gold.
I diver hunt most of my season and all my single decoys have 13ft depth of PVC Decoy cord. That way in deep water i can still set them up. Also I have noticed where i hunt Goldeneyes like seeing their own spieces in my spread
I went from a couple long lines to 8lines 2 doz single drops and exclusively targeting divers once the cold sets into wi
They were both hens. And it’s their wings that make the sound. Many late season hunts are saved by the hen golden eye lol.
Goldeneye have become the main reason we come to Kansas we shoot mallards but im a die hard diver hunter
nice job
The “whistle” they make comes from the wings I believe
They call it whistling wings because you're right.
Do a lot of diver hunting. Use the long lines to "steer" birds into the leeward side of main lake points and if the divers are there they will come. Try to use the long lines out and away from land as much as possible towards open water, just be advised some will short shot you at the outward edge. The windier the better to keep birds shuffling around the lake and not rafted up not seeking out company. Divers come to anything black and white, just play the wind and you will have a great shoot!
If you run long lines run them farther out often times the will follow the lines in and land directly in front of the last decoy closest to the bank I’ve literally seen them get in line and follow the decoys back and forth with the wind that being said with goldeneyes they almost never land with other ducks other than goldeneye if you have a mix of divers they will always land where the goldeneye decoys are
are any of the divers good for eating? Looks like fun but I just couldn't get big into it if they taste bad.
B. Ragland
The shape of the wings cause the whistling sound while the birds are flying. They’re nicknamed “whistlers”
Thank you! ive never been sure what caused it.
Try running your strings pointed into the wind. They literally work like a runway. Try it you might be surprised 😮
The wings is what making the sound
The sounds created by there feathers
Is there going to be a intro for season 8 ? Love the intros love what you guys do thanks Elliott for posting this Great job Josh on filming a Goldeneye is definitely on my bucket list for birds.
And shooting Aswell josh!
There will be an individual intro using clips from each hunt. I decided to not use one intro for the entire season. I found a lot of people were dropping off the video feeling that 30 seconds on the front of each video was to repetitive throughout the season. It was a hard decision as I really love having those intros each year.
@@FreelanceDuckHunting I'm going to steal that idea...
@@HighPrairieSportsmen I’ve always done it, just dropping the pre-made intro
@@FreelanceDuckHunting I know. Just messing with ya haha
They call me mister mallard. WTH?
Divers? Huh?
Dont know my. Goldeneye from the buffleheads on the wing. That helps to know that its the goldeneye making that sound
Goldeneye is bigger bird
Wings. They are nicknamed whistlers
It's there wings.
🇪🇨🇪🇨👏🤝👍
Once you start big water diver hunting you don't go back to those dirty park ducks. The long lines are just a way to set decoys in deeper water where single drops are a pain. Makes picking up and deploying your spread easier, especially if the wind comes up. Here in the great lakes it's the only way. Get a short line of 6 whistlers in your spread and they will be dropping in more often. You don't need a lot of decoys to get them in the pocket.
Just about every duck makes that noise when they fly over
It’s just their feathers
The golden eye makes a completely different noise when flying.
Love diver hunts.. Charlie and I do that a lot except this past year. Will get back into em this year.
Just me but I would prefer to not have you both talking at the same time. Makes it hard to understand either of you. Maybe just pause his video, talk then start himback up. I like the rest. Thanks
Good input, Ive recorded these types of videos both ways and honestly I get complaints when I pause the video and I get complaints when I don’t. LOL
Yeah, of course they work? People haven't been doing it for years if it didn't
Not digging the video inset with you talking over the guy in the video
