    Also a very simple thing that made my daily work so much easier: place useful commands in some plaintext / markdown file, and make an alias in your shell (e.g. 'notes') that does a grep or fzf on it that file. (customize a little bit to support e.g. 1 line for description and second line for the actual command). Now you'll never need to remember a command again, as long as you remember to note it on the file. For example I type "notes git" in my bash and I get all sorts of useful git commands that are a bit too tricky too remember.
    Ah and of course, use tmux with copy-mode-vi to super easily select, copy and paste the output with vi bindings :-)

    When creating multi word wiki pages try writing it in the following format:
    "this-is-a-multiple-word-page" (and then hit enter on it)
    I will benefit you in two ways:
    1) Hitting enter on it will work as you expect with single word pages, without the fuzz of adding the double square brackets
    2) You will thank yourself later in case you want to reference this file in any command as you won't have to escape all this white spaces :)

    Anyways though, I overall agree with your sentiment since it's also similar to the discussion we had on your discord after the Joplin video. I plan on switching to vim wiki as well eventually, once I find the time to move over all my notes.
    This is actually also the reason why I think I'll be sticking to markdown notation over the vim wiki specific format since it's more general and portable. I don't need vim-wiki for it to work. Since it's basically just markdown files and directories

    • @AtomToast

      Yes, of course. It was more meant as a teasing joke or something. Since you can also sync joplin files over any kind of file sharing system like nextcloud, dropbox etc probably also more or less well over git but that's not officially supported or inbuilt. Since Joplin uses sqlite which is a file based database. Though it's still very annoying since it isn't plaintext

      Emacs is not an editor tho. It's an environment that includes an editor. Emacs' editor might be as good as VIM, but it's default keybindings are just killing everything concerned with your hand (hence Evil-Mode).
      So, comparing Emacs to VIM is a bit stupid ... in my opinion. One is an extendable Editor (VIM) and the other one is an Environment (Emacs) ... or maybe even just an Emacs-Lisp IDE?
      Used Org-Mode with Spacemacs, loved it. Sadly I found that fighting Emacs is too much work for me, so I switched back to Neovim.

    I am still planning to try out org mode at some point but for now I just needed to get my notes out of Joplin, now that they are I can do whatever I want with them. Let me know your preferred note taking method down below.

    • @gz6616
      @gz6616 4 года назад

      I started off from Evernote, then moved all of that to zim (which is really nice and definitely worth a try if you have not done so already). Now I'm playing with orgmode, and thinking about moving everything from zim to org. There is a recently developed plugin "org-roam" that is replicating the Research Roam type of workflow. I'm still trying out that "zettelkasten" workflow and I think both zim and org can achieve that type of things. Basically you don't organize notes into hierarchies but inter-link them into a big network, much like the way you create [[links]] in vimwiki.
      Vim and vimwiki do not handle inserting images, do they? Latex formula? Tables? Bibliography and citations? So I think maybe you should try out org before doing a mass joplin-vim migration.

    • @moraismig81
      @moraismig81 4 года назад

      Org mode is great but emacs has it's own steep learning curve and I never got comfortable using it even with evil mode. The thing keeping me from moving to vimwiki was org mode's calendar/agenda functionality but I recently discovered the taskwiki and vim-taskwarrior plugins that integrate with the taskwarrior command line tool, so I'm considering transitioning to vimwiki.

    • @scorch855
      @scorch855 4 года назад

      Vim will always be bae, but I never found any combination of vim plugins which come close to what org mode can do out of the box. I settled for EVIL mode in emacs with whatever plugins ship with spacemacs because setup was as simple as cloning a repo. Though after using that for a couple years and now revisiting vimwiki, I think I might start using vimwiki for things that should actually be in a wiki (like esoteric commands I might use once every three months). I basically live inside vim so not having to switch to emacs or a random txt file for stuff like this would be convenient. But for planning tasks/projects/todos and even general life stuff I think it would be tough to beat org mode.

    I'm using Obsidian, backed by Syncthing. Vimwiki set up to be able to browse and edit as well if I'm on a cli. The nice thing is that it's all my data, even if my GUI is closed source, it's all my data. So I'm not DEPENDENT on Obsidian. If they become horrible, I'll just trash it.
