It requires being a member of that Sorority, and some Sororities can require members to live in the house at certain/all times in their college career if the house isn't full, with a process for allocating who gets to live outside the house (Sororities with steady or even slight dips in member numbers will have more members than spaces). I am of the understanding that KU Sororities generally require Sophomores to live in the house, unless they have a good reason why they can't, but do not seem to require others to do so (except maybe officers?) even if it leaves the house with empty spaces. Though I've only known people in a few Sororities, so I don't know if they were just describing their chapters policy/getting confused because their house had more people demanding beds than the house had. Obviously during the pandemic they had to reduce capacity, meaning the normal policy went somewhat out the window. Here's a quote from an older article on cost "Costs for KU’s sororities are similar, but they have a wider range. The average yearly live-in cost is $5,918, but the costs range from $3,350 to $7,720, said Christy Steinbrueck, the KU Panhellenic Association’s vice president for recruitment. First-year sorority members cannot live in their chapter houses, but they pay another fee to take part in chapter events. The fees range from $1,184 to $2,780 and average about $2,000, Steinbrueck said." (Lawrence Journal World, "Comparable living costs make greek life affordable", article date August 11th 2007) Obviously housing prices everywhere, including on campus housing, has gone up in price since 2007. But I don't know how much off-campus housing like Sororities and Fraternities went up since they don't exactly list their housing costs like a rental apartment does. (yes I know some houses are physically on campus, so is Naismith Hall the private dorm, I'm using the term how KU uses it, to refer to stuff it doesn't own)
