  • Some parents in West Virginia are fighting to put an end to a Bible class in public schools. For nearly 80 years, Bible stories have been taught in Mercer County as part of the regular school week. A new lawsuit argues the course is unconstitutional. Tony Dokoupil reports.

Why not ban "borderline child abuse"; ban teaching children they may burn for eternity. Ban all forms of brainwashing, whether to adults or children.
Ban teaching myth as fact and that people are worthless and born defective.

If you want your children have Bible studies do it at an after school youth group or club, home, a church, Sunday school or at a private Christian school not in public schools. Otherwise it's against the law and the United States Constitution. Public schools are for teaching children real education, ethics, literature, history, mathematics, science and art etc not religion. When are some of you folks going to learn, read up your history, read the constitution and figure out we have a wall of separation between church and state that protects everybody's rights, that protects both people that are Christians and protects those are not Christians (who has a different religion and those don't associate with any religion at all). Nobody is telling you can't have your Christian beliefs or can't teach them to your children but we're telling you just do it at home, at church, a private school or place and respect everybody else's rights that do not want to associate your private beliefs or religion except their own. It's really that simple.

@X-Files A actually, public schools were started when the child labor act came into being, and all the kids who were formerly working in factories or doing hard labor on farms were made to cease working....in order to still turn a profit off kids, the government introduced public schools....but they still gave them "summer break" so they could help on the farm during the time of year when they were most needed for labor, or in the cities, so they could get a "kid friendly" summer job to help support their family....

Children are easily influenced by the by the adults around them and by pressure of their peers. Seeing a course such as this in public schools that can easily influence the way these children live the rest of their life is quite disturbing from my point of view. Being told you're going to burn in a lake of fire if you don't live by the ways of the Bible is a sorry excuse for moral teachings. While I personally think religion as a whole is holding back society, for the most part I won't call someone out for what they believe so long as they don't start to bring their religious principals to the court house. If it can give you solace in dark times, you pray all you want. Sorry, I seem to have gotten off track a bit. Bottom line, don't teach your Bible at public schools, "voluntary" or not (doesn't seem that way after hearing the bullying that poor student received). Once the children can think on their own, observe the world around them and use reasoning, then you should let them make a decision if they want to live their life believing in a deity or not.
Also, I don't know where she gets the idea that "it doesn't teach one religion"
You're sure as hell not going to know anything about the teachings of Islam by simply studying the Bible.

The writers of the constitution would never call reading/teaching the Bible in school unconstitutional. The founding fathers prohibited religious groups from
acting as civil governing bodies, holding court convicting people of crimes and sentencing them as was done in Europe, however the government was not to prohibit the free exercise of religion and that includes schools. The state was not to have a state authorized one size fits all mandated state religion. Offer electives in the various religions including the Bible. What are people afraid of---exposing kids to knowledge and morality? Some kids would not be exposed to the golden rule etc. any other way.

No, Lyle; the state can't allow its resources to be used to spread religion (*or irreligion*). *THAT'S THE LAW.*
"Religious freedom" does _not_ mean you get to spread your religious (or _anti_-religious) views "for free" by relying on government.

Religious freedom extends to you believing and following whatever religion you want. It does NOT extend to you forcing your religious views on others (eg: banning contraception), or using tax money to promote your religion.

As a Christian myself, I was really spooked by the monotonous and seemingly rehearsed responses from the daughter in Bible class. You can tell that her mother had her rehearse what she was going to say to the journalist interviewing them...

The family was upset that they were told they would go to hell for not having part in the study of God's word. Yes that is true. It is also true that anyone who does not place their trust in Jesus Christ and believe, follow, and obey Him will also go to hell. Hell is real. Heaven is real. So what in hell, do you want, seeing that it was not created for man. Believe in Jesus Christ. He is not religion.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
    John:14:6
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

You are correct. It's not true simply because I believe it. It is also not untrue because you don't believe it. Jesus is real simply because He is real. Believe in Him or not.

The flying spaghetti monster is also real. You have no way to prove me wrong. He, through his divine powers and influence, was able to speak to a chosen few and have them write the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. I expect equal representation of Pastafarian 'historical lessons' immediately...or I could also submit to agree that all religion is kept out of publicly funded institutions. You go to Church, I'll go to Olive Garden.

Given all that your god supposedly does, he sure doesn't seem to take care of "his children" very well. If I, as a moral human, were to see a small child being raped, I would be morally obligated to do all I could to stop it. By Christian teaching, it's all right (free will) because justice will one day be served, so the child can be raped, often if necessary because in another dimension after life is over, justice will occur (unless the rapist accepts Christ as his Savior then all is forgiven). Not a very moral stance - absolutely no justice provided and all the pain for no apparent reason. All from a creature that supposedly is all powerful. Makes no sense whatsoever.

There is no invisible God. I know you want to believe there is.
I wanted to keep believing in Santa Clause when I was younger.
It gave me hope and made me happy to believe in Santa.
But, he, like "God", is just a made up character.

this is ridiculous!!! there's nothing wrong with teaching the bible in school, it's parents that don't want nothing to do with God or the truth trying to force people to denied their faith. If America is a Christian nation we shouldn't limit the bible to only church. I don't see any wrong with the school's actions

"The Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." - The Treaty of Tripoli signed by John Adams, founding father and the second President of the United States of America.
Like the person put it above. It is a nation (with a secular government).
We have a wall of separation between church and state that protects everybody's rights, that protects both people that are Christians and protects those are not Christians (who has a different religion and those don't associate with any religion at all). Read up your history and the constitution.
Nobody is telling you can't have your Christian beliefs or can't teach them to your children but we're telling you just do it at home, at church, a private school or place and respect everybody else's rights that do not want to associate your private beliefs or religion except their own. It's really that simple.
