So, apparently the red, somewhat heart-shaped things on the flag of Friesland are water-lily leaves.
Those are usually green, though, so make up your own mind.

Friesland is in Germany, you mean Fryslân.
The red water lily leaves are an old heraldic symbol. Honestly we don't know why they are red either.

Every person in Brussels and the surroundings thinks the old flag was better. The good thing is that most people still use the old flag regardless.
As someone living in Brussels, I, and most people, prefer by a LARGE amount the old flag. It was so much nicer looking !
There are places with awful flags that could use a redesign. This isn't one of those

A slight nuance here: you said that the flag for Brussels-Capital Region was created because the city had grown out of the old city boundaries, but it's actually because it is a sort of autonomous region of Belgium so it has its own parliament and government and so on, like Flanders and Wallonia. (You can compare it with the U.S. states: they all have their own parliament, but fall under the greater rule of the national parliament.) For an outsider, this seems ridiculus, especially when you know that the Brussels-Capital Region is completely surrounded by Flanders, but let's not dive too much into Belgian politics, because it's a mess!

Actually, the Frysian flag does not use hearts. Instead it uses "pompeblêden", which is Frysian for lilypads

As far as flag design goes, I think the new flag is better than the old one. Sure you can't tell that it's a flower, but I think flags should be clearly distinguishable from far away, and easy to draw, and the new flag is both.
I'm currently living in Brussels and I'm not seeing this flag often at all. The flag of the actual City of Brussels is used in most cases, I'm seeing plenty of them at my school and in the streets. It is very unlikely to see this flag or actually know his existence (in my case I knew this flag was existing but I didn't knew there was 5 different versions of it). I agree that the old flag was better but to be honest the design of this flag is not that bad considering it's not the flag of our country and in most of the time you will only see it online or in official documents.

I'm going against the grain here and say that I like the new flag more than the old one.
What I'd do is just recolour the heart to the same yellow and call it a day.

Those "hearts" of the Frisian flag are not hearts. They are "Pompeblêd". Frisian for Seeblatt

I see nothing wrong with the flag. It is very memorable, simple, and bright. The previous flag's symbol was very complicated. All these criticisms are a matter of personal preference. The purpose of a flag is recognition, and this flag is unmistakable.
Yes flags are made with the purpose of recognition, but when the first think your flag makes me recognize is ms paint, time for new flag lol

I remember that the Brussels-region spent hours debating and millions in the design of the (previous) iris flag. Why change it again for something that doesn't represent anything? Too much money? Belgium is the land of surrealism!
At first I thought you meant iris as in eyes. When you look at it that way, it starts to look threatening

I actually like the new flag more. It is much more simple and easier to remember. The old one is too complicated. Although I agree that the difference between the RGB and CMYK versions is a bit strange.
I guess if you make the flag/logo in CMYK first and than convert it to RGB for screen use, the colours should be more consistent with eachother, since RGB can go to much brighter colours.
I think if you went with the cmyk colors it'd be fine. The old flag looks too complex and plain at the same time, if that makes sense? Just get rid of the eye-searing rgb colors.

So I thought the two yellow parts were meant to symbolise the Flemish-- and French speakers, and the heart in the middle was meant to symbolise a fruitful union between both.
With that idea in mind, I actually like the design. Honestly, I kinda like it more than the old one regardless of its meaning. The old one was too elaborate, not something you could draw from memory.

I think that the older flag is a tad bit complicated in the design of the flower, but it is still perfectly serviceable, and there are honestly much worse flags in use (at least, for local regions). The new one is... not great. Good as a more simple logo, but not as a flag.

As a Belgian I can confirm: This is so stereotypically Belgian that it's kind of funny. A new thing for no good reason, take a good idea that was for something else and muck it up, the different colour values that aren't the same but should be, the bureacracy. Amazing.

DID YOU KNOW: Those are NOT hearts on the flag of Fryslân (Friesland), they are "pompeblêden", which are leaves of the yellow water-lily. It's a very common mistake, even sometimes still made amongst my fellow Frysians! 😉

@@bryankelly335 they are based on byzantine images of the of clubs (playing cards) the byzantines used red and gold interchangeably in heraldics. The reason it shows up in Friesland(and Scandinavia) is because of the varangian guard) the Scandinavians morphed the image to something they were familiar with waterlilies

Friesland doesn't have hearts, it has pompeblad/lily pad/seeblatt. The flag of the neighboring Ommelanden region does have hearts though.

These are NO hearts on the Friesland flag. These are leaves of a water plant. And they represent the 7 frisian islands.

it looks like two droplets being squirted from under a heart, so I though it symbolizes some kind of historical fountain that they have, or a spring , or something else water-related 💦. But your comment about health-something makes sense as well, so I think spa is the best match :D

Those "hearts" on the frisian flag are also flowers, (specifically the flower of the water lilly) goes to show that people just have a hard time simplifying flowers into anything that isnt a heart.

The RGB thing is interesting, because RGB is underspecified. There are multiple ways of taking numbers for red, green, and blue and turning them into lights on a screen. Maybe it worked on the designer’s monitor but not other peoples’

CMYK and Pantone are meant for printing purposes. Often times CMYK will look different from an equivalent RGB value if compared on a screen. I bet if you tried to get the CMYK image printed up at a commercial printer that calibrates their machines to properly match CMYK or Pantone values you'd end up with the image similar to the RGB image you see on screen. Provided your screen calibration isn't entirely screwed up.
Also, if you look up Pantone 072 (the blue specified for the flag) even on screen you can see it is meant to be a brighter blue. But I have to say it again. CMYK and Pantone are not meant to be used for screens, they are meant for printing. For Pantone you can even order books with color swatches so that you can compare your prints and make sure your machines are calibrated correctly for Pantone printing.
So... the ugly colors are totally on purpose then?
@@ninjafruitchilled Whether you consider them ugly is up to you. However, the colors chosen are consistent which is all I was trying to point out.
CMYK is a subtractive color scheme (all colors combined results in black) mainly used for printers to represent color from screens (which use RGB as additive color scheme (all colors combined results in white)). CMYK colors on screens look strange some times. I guess the RGB version on screens is the right one and looks like it should (even if it doesn't look that great). Nice video - as always - though :)

Because the first time I saw it it was in a train station adjacent to a street full of brothels. I lived there for 3 years, and for 2 of those I thought the sign pointing towards the exit was actually pointing to 'the place where you ejaculate'.

Anyone can make a bad flag, but it takes a boatload of idiots to get such a bad flag to actually represent the Capital Region of a country with such impeccable history of excellent flags.

I really don't mind, I don't dwell the RUclipss as much as I used to, but stopping by every so often and seeing an upload from an uncommon channel like CGP or Kurzgesagt is a joy, a well crafted video is better than a more common one imo.
So the flag is fine, they just made a mistake on the colours in their document. As a Belgian though, I really associated that first flag with Brussels, even if I never knew it was meant to represent a flower. They shouldn't have dropped that one in the first place.

As a disclaimer, this is my first time seeing any of these flags, but the new one is definitely nicer, although the whole colour issue is annoying...

I actually quite like the design of a the flag. Maybe mute the colours a bit, tighten up the petals, and fix whatever the hell is going on with the heart color, but yeah, i'd fly that flag.
The old one was still way better though.
I'm pretty sure it would have been possible to design a stylized/more 2D looking Iris which is both easy to draw AND actually looks like a flower. Because when you said "Iris" the first time I unironically assumed you mean the eye-iris because it absolutely doesn't look like any kind of flower.
