I very strongly disagree with most points you made in this video. I actually really like the UN flag and the way it represents earth. The Lay-out of the world‘s continents is pretty much the most basic (and only) thing that all countries can agree and put similar value on as it simply displays their „home“. The Northpole projection is ingenious as it removes a lot of the biases towards a specific region since it is simply a fact that there are more people and, even more importantly, more landmass on the northern hemisphere. Leaving Antarctica out is a very acceptable down side to this and the compromise on focusing on the GMT Line makes sense as it puts the pacific towards the back which is the least inhabited part of the globe. Communication is still functioning as the white and blue Colour scheme is Sufficient to distinctly spot the UN flag from a distance and being able to “draw” a flag really shouldn’t be a criteria for flag design in our day and age anymore. Also those “fundamental values” you described are actually much more euro centric (or American) than the simple display of the geographic features of the earth. Freedom of speech and freedom of worship are definitely NOT the most common shared values across the entire globe. And even if they were I can’t imagine China or anyone else for that matter being happy with a quote of a wartime US-president being the foundation of what essentially is the world’s emblem. Therefore I find the 4 stripes pattern (not even mentioning its obvious visual shortcomings which others here have already described sufficiently) decidedly inferior compared to the current design (which I do think is in fact the best compromise there is).

I think the UN flag is actual a masterpiece. It presents in a clear enough way the world so that you see where everywhere is. It's centering one europe is the option that allow for the most countries near the top to not be mushed up. It doesn't show antartica because it's unimportant and a tense region. It's colour scheme makes is recongizable. Anyone looking at it from afar will guess it's the UN (the flag of Somalia is rarely scene and the central area shaps are kind of opposites), the red and white flag you're offering actual less recognizable, red and white aren't exactly rare on flags. The messagery is much less controversial. Instead of imposing American values (it's literrally based on a state of the union adress, not exactly neutral) that are at best centered on the West it puts a clear neutral message that few would openly object to (freedom of speach and religion are not at all seen as universal rights by UN countires let alons beligireant combatants). Being non controversial is key for a flag of peace keepers who want to be defended by the universal values they represent.
@@marten8148 Agreed, I proudly hang a UN flag in my room (just wish Antarctica could have some representation, but I guess the Antarctic Treaty System and Antarctica Flags are pretty nice)
Honestly this entire video feels dumb. The UN flag is probably the second most recognizable flag in the world. Literally there's only 1 other country using that light blue and white combination. And while it's not perfect. His new flag is so bad. There's the symbolism that's just dumb. He's using American values in a UN flag? And then he claims using the line where the whole globe adjusts it's time is biased? Also there's the fact everyone would be confused by it. It's redesign lacks any recognition. Like he said, the UN relies on recognition to defend itself and 4 pillars are so fucking vague nobody would recognize it. This video just reeks of him trying to justify why the UN would use this flag. He creates this "issue" with recognizability and then does mental gymnastics trying to prove the UN's old flag was better when it was far, far worse. It adds nothing. It creates conflict and confusion. Honestly the worse video on his Chanel by far.
I agree with most of what you said but just as a small correction: he actually never proposed to change the flag to the red-white color scheme. He wanted to keep the iconic blue and white and just change the "logo".
I think the whole "you can't see the details from a distance" isn't necessarily an issue. As long as you can identify what the flag is at a distance, it doesn't matter how many details it has. For example, look at the Portuguese flag, it has a lot of detail in the center, but has a design that lets it stand out from other flags at a glance. I'd argue it's a better flag than for example the Dutch flag, which is really simple and straightforward, but there's so many similar looking flags (Russia, Luxemburg, Croatia, Paraguay, just to name a few) that it loses that "identifiable from a distance" property.
I know keeping it simple is an important rule in flag design but I think this is a rare exception. The UN flag should be a little grandiose and flamboyant. It's represents a meeting of all the nations on earth working on freedom and peace for all and I think a fancy flag can reflect that important mission.
While the UN emblem is definitely overly detailed in a vexillological sense, I do like it more than just four simple pillars, which are a bit boring :’ ) Additionally, there is also a issue regarding the meaning of the pillars; Some UN-member states are not exactly the biggest fans of (some of) these freedoms and might oppose such a new design. I think a better solution might be to simplify the projection of the earth on the flag and maybe to remove the wreath.
I think that trying to get every country to agree to a flag that references so many freedoms would be hard. There's quite a few UN members which are freedom-optional. ://
(1:10) Proportions/Aspect ratio can never be "bigger" than another. 2:3 isn't bigger than 1:1, and isn't bigger than 3:5. It's all about how it's formatted. • If you have a fixed width of the flags, then the less square flags will be bigger and longer. • If you have a fixed length of the flags, then the more square flags will be bigger and taller. • If you ensure all flags have the same area, then no flag is bigger than another. A 1:1 flag will be shorter but taller than a 2:3 flag
Mathematically, if a ratio is just a rational number, it is comparable to other ratios. 2:3 = 0.66…, 1:1 = 1, 3:5 = 0.6. So 3:5 < 2:3, and 2:3 < 1:1. You identify two different things: the area of a flag and the size of its aspect ratio. I think we agree on that greater area means bigger flag, but bigger aspect ratio can mean relatively either wider or higher depending on the definition. In this case, it seems that the aspect ratio is the ratio of height to width, so relatively higher is bigger.
I would change the globe to a solid circle and make the olive branches somewhat straighter so they stay under the globe rather than wrap around it. Keeps the symbolism while making it more visually distinct from a distance.
Perhaps make the branches gold instead/as well like how it was shown in the video. Adds a new color with a generally well understood meaning to offset the 2 light colors as well as making it more visually distinct
i actually think you should stretch the white pillars out more to make it *really* look like jail bars, so it can be more actually representative of the UN
I mean you could just have a blue background with a globe looking shape in the middle without any continents. Similar to the armillary sphere (gold part in the Portuguese flag)
I might agree with tha fact that un flag isn't good But I totally disagree on the fact that it should be replaced with 4 red stripes & a white background
@@sonja5058 The point is: To me, this map, despite its Eurocentrism, is not unfair to the rest of the world.... @@FriedTurkey You'd have to give the punishment to yourself. Because the UN represents your interests.
You see how it works now?

One thing I do like about the map in the current UN flag is that although strange-looking it's actually as fair as a world-map could conceivably be.
Areas in the north get to be in the center at the cost of being smaller, and areas in the south get to be larger at the cost of being more distorted
I think the symbolism is only "meh" because it's very literal. It's a world, and the symbol for peace, aka "World Peace". I think the U.N. understands that peace isn't exactly an exciting concept, but it's literally what it's striving for.

Flat Earthers are truly special
The current flag of the UN is honestly one of my favorite flags
@@marten8148 Agreed, I proudly hang a UN flag in my room (just wish Antarctica could have some representation, but I guess the Antarctic Treaty System and Antarctica Flags are pretty nice)
I just thought I mean it's kinda a dumb idea but what if you had a south pole projection on the backside of the flag so it could include antarctica
He wanted to keep the iconic blue and white and just change the "logo".
you kno wwhat? Just make the flag a hexagon, because we all know that hexagons are bestagons
Good idea!
Wrong channel but yeah lol, i agree
noice idea
I think the whole "you can't see the details from a distance" isn't necessarily an issue. As long as you can identify what the flag is at a distance, it doesn't matter how many details it has. For example, look at the Portuguese flag, it has a lot of detail in the center, but has a design that lets it stand out from other flags at a glance. I'd argue it's a better flag than for example the Dutch flag, which is really simple and straightforward, but there's so many similar looking flags (Russia, Luxemburg, Croatia, Paraguay, just to name a few) that it loses that "identifiable from a distance" property.
Or Slovakia vs Slovenia... and even more, Monaco and Indonesia (although, they are much farther apart, and don't come into contact that often)
It's not our fault so many flags look like ours, the Netherlands had it before the rest did
What about a flaming skull with a knife?
the flag u sugested sadly whould never be accepted because it had a mesage that would probably offend China
I know keeping it simple is an important rule in flag design but I think this is a rare exception. The UN flag should be a little grandiose and flamboyant. It's represents a meeting of all the nations on earth working on freedom and peace for all and I think a fancy flag can reflect that important mission.
"Flags should be simple."
The US: *Are you sure about that?*
I think you could change your name to: Flags that suck and sometimes potatoes

I like the current UN flag as it is :/
While the UN emblem is definitely overly detailed in a vexillological sense, I do like it more than just four simple pillars, which are a bit boring :’ ) Additionally, there is also a issue regarding the meaning of the pillars; Some UN-member states are not exactly the biggest fans of (some of) these freedoms and might oppose such a new design.

2937282:1928517 is my favorite aspect ratio
I would change the globe to a solid circle and make the olive branches somewhat straighter so they stay under the globe rather than wrap around it. Keeps the symbolism while making it more visually distinct from a distance.
