I haven't seen this question addressed anywhere: what about entering the park during off-peak hours? I'm especially thinking early morning before the entrance stations are manned. I assume that's one way you could get around the license plate restriction. I'm not planning a Yellowstone trip, more just raising a hypothetical. When I went last year, I entered at about 2 am (having driven straight through from Seattle) and dozed in my car at the Old Faithful parking for a few hours before the sun came up (and had the place basically to myself for a predawn eruption I might add). I know, I know, you technically can't do this, but a) National Parks are open 24/7 (except in extraordinary circumstances like this), and b) I've NEVER seen this rule enforced. I spend a lot of time in parks at night, mainly Mt. Rainier and Olympic, for astronomy.

Right now I’m watching your video about when you went up Medano Creek near Great Sand Dunes National Park. It’s driving me CRAZY because you mispronounced “Medano” throughout the ENTIRE video! My dad grew up in the San Luis Valley in a tiny town called Crestone, very close to the park. He was born in 1926, and much of his family lived in Blanca throughout their lives. We went to the Great Sand Dunes each year when we visited the Valley. Anyway, the correct pronunciation for “Medano” is “Med No” not “Meh Dawn No”…your videos are great and I really enjoy them, but check the correct pronunciation for the areas, okay? And thanks for the current coverage of Yellowstone and the situation there. Safe travels.

If your lodging or campground is closed, your reservation will be cancelled and you will be subject to the ALPS system. Same goes for days where part of your reservation is canceled. For instance: they expect to reopen Madison Campground on June 29th. If you have a reservation for Madison Campground from June 27th-July 2nd, Xanterra will cancel June 27th and 28th from your reservation and you will be subject to ALPS, but June 29th-July 2nd your reservation will still be valid and you may enter the park regardless of license plate provided you do not opt to cancel those reservation dates.

Got a question. I have an even numbered license plate and I had a room booked at the Roosevelt Lodge in July. • @theparkjunkie

As far as I can ascertain, the current rules would restrict your entry on the odd days. That said, the northern loop may be open by your arrival date, & the Roos Lodge may very well be open by then, although there is no way of knowing that at this time. Stay tuned & good luck!
