YES! DLR had a GREAT voice, gorgeous. If they hadn't done video, he STILL would've been recognizable, possibly loved for his vocals more than ever - and masculine too.
Dave was never a technical singer and he openly admits that. His swagger, humor, and natural charisma is what made him special. When that classic lineup got together it was absolutely magic. He was the perfect front man for that band. The guys at Lost In Vegas described his contribution flawlessly. To paraphrase, he's not really dynamic but his attitude (the way he delivers the lines) and charisma is cool as f*ck. You cant teach it. Its natural to him. He used to get denigrated for not having much range and i understand why everyone thought that because he tended to stay in his midrange and utilize his whistle register. I always felt that wasn't true cause I never heard an example of him using his lower range back then. After his departure from Van Halen he started singing down into the first octave proving my suspicion correct. Starting with his Your Filthy Little Mouth album he routinely used it while still hitting fifth octave notes in full voice rather than falsetto. However, he no longer had the ability to hit those sustained whistle notes easily like before. Their last album A Different Kind of Truth showed he could still hit them (not on command though). His voice was just cool IMHO. I wish he'd have taken better care of it. He has struggled to stay in key the last few tours.
Listen to the high-quality video of You're No Good. It's a professionally shot video from '79 and Dave KILLS on it in every way. The whole song is insane from start to finish, especially the vocals. (and that solo! WOW)
Awesome video! Thanks for the little guide on the whistle screams. Nobody else on RUclips could do them justice, it was all just Mariah Carey style whistle stuff. This is wicked \m/
Haha Mariah Carey! Indeed Raven, She's got that shit DOWN for sure! It's certainly not really "easy" to do those, which shows that Dave WAS/IS in fact quite talented, in that way... it's his little 'party trick' that VH would NOT be the same without! @@RockYourBestVocals Indeed. Guitarists , Drummers and bass players have a lot of channels and us singers need them to 😁🤘⚡⚡🤘😁
Hey David - thanks for subscribing! Totally agree with you - personality is a MUST when it comes to performing, and the GREAT ones knew that and just did their thing their own way... I'm really glad to share this place with you and I'll be creating some other spaces where Singers can share valuable tips, tricks, stories and help each other. Hey Mark, thank you for that - agree! Van Halen is like the acrobatics of music for sure, and so challenging and exciting to perform! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment - really appreciate you!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
What is also interesting about Dave is when he does covers of soul songs, he shows much more traditional technique. It's almost like he's choosing to sing with a lot more swagger in Van Halen. From 77 to about 1980 he actually sang very well live and was less into the ringmaster of the show type stuff. Also one thing they used to do live was this falsetto stuff which was just outstanding:ruclips.net/video/5TJUi8saSMM/видео.html
Very glad to be of service! I'm such a fan of Dave's dual-tone awesomeness - his trademark party trick and goes so well with Eddie's incredible playing! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
To me, the consummate DLR scream comes in "Everybody Wants Some" in the outro after the last chorus. A full 5 seconds of that scream with the harmonic on top!
@@RockYourBestVocals Great channel, subscribed! I'm a drummer, and along with keying in on the rhythm section I have always been drawn to unique vocalists. One, Peter Gabriel, is instantly recognizable. Surprisingly, I like him better as a solo artist than with Genesis. This is another one of those sustained notes that I can listen to over and over again: ruclips.net/video/ALJARgzHcLg/видео.html At the end he seems to be forcing every last ounce of air from his lungs. Another is Devin Townsend. Enough said.
You forgot about - all the booze and drugs, plus two packs of smokes, and a bottle of Bikini Remover. THEN you can sing like David Lee Roth. Very interesting dissection though of his vocal technique though! Someone who can also totally nail it is the lead singer of Steel Panther. Back in the day they had a VH cover band named "Atomic Punks". There was a night where Michael Anthony himself played bass with them. Search here on RUclips for *"Atomic Punks with Michael Anthony"* and they're doin RWTD. You almost can't tell it isn't DLR singing on stage he nails it so good.

@@RockYourBestVocals Hey np, and Thank YOU for taking the time to make the videos and get into such detail about DLR's techniques! I know you had asked for suggestions of videos, and since you've done DLR - how about a video of Sammy Hagar's techniques on the 5150 album!? Specifically on "Why Can't This Be Love" and "Dreams" . He has his own type of high register singing going on. In fact from what I've heard/read is that when he first got together with the band, EVH was blown away at his vocal range and the notes he could hit. Hence, 5150 was born.
It was a gift from Diamond Dave himself! ;) (jk HAHA, 🤣 I got it a few years ago at H&M so I'm sure they're all long gone by now)... I'll send it to you! 😬👍🏼 Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

Not spectacular? Roth was the ONLY one doing it like that... his range, his control , his vibrato - those amazing weird sounds he could make on command - Never heard anyone else do it so well. Especially early Roth... his vocals were stunning
ooops, yeah my comment on him not being 'spectacular' I think didn't 'hit the mark' I really meant that from a 'technical' perspective (in the 'educational' sense), so YES, I 100% agree that the sounds he made WERE indeed SPECTACULAR and nobody else does (or even CAN do) them the way he did/does them. In that sense, he was AMAZING and PERFECT for Van Halen (IMHO) - in fact I was listening to the isolated vocal track again today (serendipitously) and was thinking how AWESOME those sounds were and perfect for the songs! Thank you for taking the time to watch comment... Happy New Year!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
I'm not sure if JBJ does the same type of whistle screams, but in any case it would certainly sound similar (although DLR had a particularly insane ability to do this!) thank you for taking the time to watch and comment - much appreciated!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Hey Wow - So glad to hear this unlocked your whistle scream, and you got it so fast! AMAZING AND WELL DONE! Sometimes it takes people a long time to get it! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
That's certainly something I've always been perplexed by and in awe of - the whistle register with the roughness of his chest voice, but the whistle register is actually generated higher up "with the whistle register, the larynx is covered by the epiglottis to create smaller space" (from this article, which is pretty good on whistle reg: www.becomesingers.com/vocal-range/whistle-register-singing-voice )
You need to do a video on his screams and the train whistle trick sound he does like in somebody get me a doctor. Its like he suck in air when he screams LOL
Hey good idea! I used to suck air in to scream like Dave and I can still do it, but since I've found out how to exhale whistle it's MUCH easier on my lungs/throat (inhaling is a lot less effective for me now comparatively speaking!) Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Very cool man...I always wondered how he got that kind of double-sound with the whistle. He said he listened to the Ohio Players and some others (which is rad, btw) to learn how to scream, but I couldn't really get it from those (awesome recordings).
Hey Trevor, as long as you sing correctly without 'engaging' the vocal cords too much (and NOT pushing a ton of air through your cords) it's not hard on your cords. Dave pushes more air through than may be necessary, so his stamina has decreased and cords have deteriorated *slightly* over time (ALTHOUGH, he actually can still sing like a mofo, judging by some 'good' clips of him live) I'm guessing a lot of the damage was talking after gigs, shouting, and also lots of interviews... (Corey Taylor from Slipknot was on Bertcast podcast recently talking about how what he referred to as 'peopling' can really wreck your voice) Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!!🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Dave had an amazingly unique style. A great tone with an awesome delivery. Just imagine how awful VH wld had been with Dio or Dickinson it's the reason VH doesn't sound dated
It also helps to smoke Marlboro's, drink JD and eat cheese burgers to get that voice. Ted Templeman said in an interview that during the recording of the first record, Dave stopped doing anything that was detrimental to his voice and cleaned up his diet. His voice changed and he didn't have that same raspy growl that we all know. Ted asked him to get back on the old Dave diet immediately and the rest is history.
I love this story! I'm sure Diamond Dave was thrilled to hear he just needed to smoke and drink whiskey to make a good record! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! Appreciate your support!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Doing it while breathing out doesn't quite get the fullness of the harmonic; I saw a remarkable David Lee Roth clone and a cover band ages ago, and he nailed all of those sounds PERFECTLY! On a break between sets, I got to ask him how he did it; he said... " - in! "... So you reverse the airflow when you're singing those notes, which is kind of tricky, but works perfectly!
Agree - when you hear him isolated you get a WHOLE NEW LEVEL of appreciation for him... that's why I love to listen to the isolated tracks so you can REALLY hear what they are doing... DLR is AMAZING! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
A "circus clown" in the studio he certainly was not. He was dead serious and it showed, especially in those isolated tracks. In fact, I don't really think the "circus clown" analogy fits at all, and it's over used. Sure, DLR always had some crazy antics up his sleeve, and he was all about the party when he was on the stage, but he was no clown. He was a professional rock'n'roll front man baby.
The secret to DLR's vocals? First start out with Eddie Van Halen, Alex and Michael Anthony. Track down Ted Templeman to mix it and have Noel Monk manage the band. That said... Roth gave 110% and worked hard turning what was in that always running brain of his into making it happen.
The whistle tone is done with the 'false folds' (false cords) which are above the true vocal cords... some people do this by inhaling (I used to - but now just makes me cough HAHA!) however, inhaling is much harder to master control of.... hope that helps! thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
To sound like DLR in 2020, all you gotta do is gargle with some used cat litter. But don't spit it out after. Swallow it. And, without drinking any liquids, start singing. And bingo! You nailed it!
@@RockYourBestVocals Nah, my friend. You don't need to sound like DLR. He never really was a SINGER, singer. It's never been a secret that he was more personality that vocal talent. Anyhow, Cheers from NYC.
@@slugcult1973 He didn't need to "overcompensate". He knew exactly what he was doing, and it was the very essence of what rock was all about.
Bravissimo

Indeed.
I think a lot of personality has been lost in someways with some singers especially in Rock, It's all about being yourself when it comes to making your own music...that's what all our favorite bands/Singers did was just be themselves and did their own thing 🤘
I subscribed this morning
It's cool to have a channel for us singers.
Guitarists , Drummers and bass players have a lot of channels and us singers need them to
😁🤘⚡⚡🤘😁
Hey David - thanks for subscribing! Totally agree with you - personality is a MUST when it comes to performing, and the GREAT ones knew that and just did their thing their own way... I'm really glad to share this place with you and I'll be creating some other spaces where Singers can share valuable tips, tricks, stories and help each other. One of them is through my "Kickstart Your Voice" course - I will be setting up a MEMBERS ONLY area for people who have gone through that course, once I get enough that have done that... Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment - really appreciate you!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Nasal falsetto very interesting.Good vocal Teacher
I’ll never understand why most people say Sammy was the better singer. Sam is good but he could never do those high pitched screams that Dave did. Dave also had a much wider range.
He was like Ian Gillan meets James Brown..He was powerful, melodic and could soar ...don't forget about his "war cry"
Indeed Myke - what an entertainer! Larger than life personality and NEVER takes himself too seriously, while STILL doing great things (have you seen his art?) Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

Awesome vid. Van Halen is probably the most fun to play because Eddy`s parts are such a challenge. I had to learn a bunch of new tricks for each song. My favorites to jam along with are On fire and Outta Love Again CRANKED! So fun.
Hey Mark, thank you for that - agree! Van Halen is like the acrobatics of music for sure, and so challenging and exciting to perform! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment - really appreciate you!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Awesome man. You Rock.
Okay, but where'd you get the shirt?
😂 Yankee Rose video, right?
How to do head voice scream like bon jovi?
What is also interesting about Dave is when he does covers of soul songs, he shows much more traditional technique. It's almost like he's choosing to sing with a lot more swagger in Van Halen.
From 77 to about 1980 he actually sang very well live and was less into the ringmaster of the show type stuff.
Also one thing they used to do live was this falsetto stuff which was just outstanding:ruclips.net/video/5TJUi8saSMM/видео.html
You really nailed that man. For years I was wondering how he go those dual toned screen. Thanks
Oh HELL yeah! SUCH a great song! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment - appreciate you!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

You almost can't tell it isn't DLR singing on stage he nails it so good.
haha yeah, Dave partook of ALL the 'trappings' of being a superstar lead singer 🤣👍🏼 Yes, Steel Panther is friggin AMAZING! They are just simply NEXT LEVEL performers AND songwriters! Love em! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
I want to know where he got that T-shirt from. I can't find it online
It was a gift from Diamond Dave himself! ;) (jk HAHA, 🤣 I got it a few years ago at H&M so I'm sure they're all long gone by now)... I'll send it to you! 😬👍🏼 Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
@@RockYourBestVocals Thanks man I appreciate it! I've been wanting to know how to sound like David Lee for a while. This video really helped

Very intelligent vocal teacher!!
DLR cover the sound b y opening the throat( See Pavarotti video covering)
Ian Gillan and the singer from
TT Quick live 1992 (now with Accept) are screaming like that
Sounds like Axl Rose does the dual tone like Roth.
Similar indeed! However, Axl is more 'frontal placement' whereas Dave is more 'throaty' and 'rounded' tonally... Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

HAHA figured you'd like this one, Dan - And yes! it was Vicar Street, WHAT A SHOW!!! Can't believe Diamond Dave is still going! His band are always incredible and so talented!!! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment bro - much love!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Not spectacular? Roth was the ONLY one doing it like that... his range, his control , his vibrato - those amazing weird sounds he could make on command -
Never heard anyone else do it so well.
JUST BRILLIANT !!!!!!!!!! if you ever do a VH tribute video do let me play guitar on it !!
You got it! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
So does the screams apply to bon Jovi too?
I'm not sure if JBJ does the same type of whistle screams, but in any case it would certainly sound similar (although DLR had a particularly insane ability to do this!) thank you for taking the time to watch and comment - much appreciated!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Thank you so much. Been tackling it with falsetto but the wrong air direction. How to whistle scream solved!
Hey Wow - So glad to hear this unlocked your whistle scream, and you got it so fast! AMAZING AND WELL DONE! Sometimes it takes people a long time to get it! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Crazy how bright his whistle was out of how much set back the rest of his voice was
That's certainly something I've always been perplexed by and in awe of - the whistle register with the roughness of his chest voice, but the whistle register is actually generated higher up "with the whistle register, the larynx is covered by the epiglottis to create smaller space" (from this article, which is pretty good on whistle reg: www.becomesingers.com/vocal-range/whistle-register-singing-voice )
Amazing! How hard is that on your vocal chords? I’ve noticed DLR can’t do most of this stuff anymore.
Trying this, but my dogs are now attempting to chew their way out the back door because of the sound I'm making. Is that normal?
LOL - totally normal, mine does that every time I imitate Diamond Dave! 😂
David lee Roth gets so much hate even tho I would say compared to most dry studio vocals his vocals sound like a fucking force of nature.
Agree - when you hear him isolated you get a WHOLE NEW LEVEL of appreciation for him... that's why I love to listen to the isolated tracks so you can REALLY hear what they are doing... DLR is AMAZING! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Bobcat Goldthwait sort of comes to mind
AWESOME! He ALWAYS comes to my mind! Miss that dude.... Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!!
Waw 👏👏👏
😁👍🏼 Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

Hey Robert, thank you very much! Ahhh the old nose-candy surely would help - haha! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
David has charisma, loves to be out front, and was and is not bad looking either 😁
Nailed it! 😀👍🏼 Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
How do you do that high whistle tone when he’s in head voice?
The whistle tone is done with the 'false folds' (false cords) which are above the true vocal cords... some people do this by inhaling (I used to - but now just makes me cough HAHA!) however, inhaling is much harder to master control of.... hope that helps! thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Just sound like John Travolta in welcome back Kotter but strain and sing it
To sound like DLR in 2020, all you gotta do is gargle with some used cat litter. But don't spit it out after. Swallow it. And, without drinking any liquids, start singing. And bingo! You nailed it!
Hey Djohn, that sounds a little extreme, but I'm game - LOL! 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
@@RockYourBestVocals Nah, my friend. You don't need to sound like DLR. He never really was a SINGER, singer. It's never been a secret that he was more personality that vocal talent. @@slugcult1973 He didn't need to "overcompensate". He knew exactly what he was doing, and it was the very essence of what rock was all about.
