Your video gave me an idea about a tool that may help make taking comb out of places like that a little easier. I was thinking of maybe using piano wire attached to the end of either two knifes or like 6 to 8 inch thin strips of metal sort of like a garrote so you can slice through behind the comb and the sides at the same time. The piano wire should cause very little damage to the comb and just cut it where it connects. Great video.
I like very much your idea of using wire to cut comb, it is a common practice with some of the different types of bee boxes. Thanks for taking the time to watch and leave a great comment. God's peace Rick. Mr. Ed
That honeycomb looks so good my mouth is watering. I want to take a bite out of it. Ha Ha. Those bees were so docile. I guess they wanted to go home with Derrick.
Saw some days ago the metropolit of Moskow welcome the reliks of St Nicolaus it was somthing unique, the saint was travel by tourist bus and was carried out by soldiers before the metropolit and his hord of prests and diakon's taking over the shrine! If they was taking over the relics or borrowed them I don't know. It was just the fact that a saints relics was arriving by a tourist bus that was very unusual! That hive was Big! And the magic man hypnotic the queen walking on his fingers! Did you got some honny out of it too? Bless you! BarbroSweden
I think that is really a funny thought, a saint traveling on a tourist bus. Well. maybe it's not funny of a thought, I am sure there are lots of living saints ( they just don't know it yet ) that travel by tourist buses. Still, very interesting. We did get some honey from it, over 50 pounds of the sweet stuff. Thank you for your blessing, great story, and for all the time you spend watching me wrangle and save bees. God's peace Barbro. Well, Jeff was thinking about it.... since it was Santa Clause that was out on travel on weel, if it had been in the Russian wintertime, would they have used a golden sledge from the Winter palace drawn by 12 Reindeer 's then ?! Newer mind, must have been very honorfull for the Ortodox community to welcome Saint Nicolaus to Moscow ! There are a video about the metropolit visiting Mount Atos that is very special to.....but in a howle ather way! Hope you get a good bee year. Here we wait to moving the lawns and as it have bee a wet and warm spring it has growing more this year then ever in the last twenty years. But we have a lot of insects, witch is good for the pollination it is only here we don't vaccum the farmyard and the garden bit's! BarbroSweden

I love your videos so much!! The enthusiasm and joy you exhibit when you find the queen just fills the soul!! It was so interesting!! Do you leave the rubber bands on the frame or do you remove them later when the comb becomes solid to the frame? Mr. Ed, you are such a blessing to watch!! May God bless!
The bee will cut the rubber bands as soon as they have secured the comb to the frame. Once they cut it, they will drag it out of the hive, it's really cool to see rubber bands hanging from the hive entrance. Thank your for watching and for your blessing. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Hi Jeff. That was a great video of those bees & great you caught the queen. I recently re-hived a swarm from a barn here in the UK. The comb was amazing & we very luckily caught the queen who was actually marked. I have a question please. What type of vac do you use? I used my workshop vac with my bee veil over the inside to capture the bees & not damage them as best I could. Quite successful but really difficult to empty afterwards. I have a video if you want to see. PS. The new hive is doing really well and looks good going into the autumn.
So happy to hear of the success of the removal, I always love a happy ending to a good story. Send me a link to the video, I'd love to watch. As far as the bee vac I use, check out this link. It gives info on the vac I use and I use it on a hive from the same shed this hive was removed from . Let me know what you think. thanks for watching. God's peace. These storms are killing me, blowing the garden over limbs and thing Knocked out the power for 18 hrs Knocked out my AC. TV ect And it's HOT AND HUMID > BETTER DAYS ARE COMING> CHEERS BUD
AS bacteria will not grow in honey, I wear them to keep the honey off my hands. They work very well for that purpose, and it is a bit more sanitary. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
This was the 3rd large hive from this one shed, some great genetics here. The top bar is doing great, and when I shot the video about gathering our honey boxes, I'll make sure I put it in the video. God's peace Robert. Mr. Ed
Jeff, how do hives get that large and old if the hive swarms to a new home? Are there multiple queens in a nest where one queen stays and the others swarm? I used to be scared of a hive like today's video, now I see it as honey.
When the bees in a hive have good genetic like this one, they can build a tremendous amount of comb in a short period of time. Believe it or not, these bees have only been here for about 3 months. And no, there are not multiple queens in the hive. Also, happy to hear of your change in your phobic condition. Thanks for watching. God's peace Joey. Mr. Ed
Not sure if this is a weird question but how many rubber bands do you think you use in a week or month with relocating hives s often? How long did it take to remove hive out of he wall?
I will go through at least 2 big bags of #33 rubber band a year, my guess, several hundred. It took just about 3 hours to remove these bees, about the average time for a removal. By the way, your rubber band question was one no one has asked before, good one. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Hey Mr Ed- Newbie question: When you do removals and then set them up in hives, do you find that those bees are “survivor bees” and therefore have a better chance against varroa mites?
That is my opinion. Of course, not all of the bees make it, but the ones that do possess traits and genetics that enable them to perpetuate, and those are the qualities in bees that i am interested in. Great question, thanks for asking and watching. God's peace Kay. Mr. Ed
Is there any spray to deter bees from coming back? U mentioned you need to block off all entrances so they dont come back, but is there a way to remove thier pheromones?
Not really. The buildings that attract swarms just attract them. That shed with the horizontal corrugated roof material used as siding is a bee magnet. T111 vertical siding is another type of material that attracts swarms.
As of today, there is nothing on the market that will permanently halt the return of bees to an area that has previously been occupied with them. The person that does come up with the solution will become an instant billionaire. The reason is not so much pheromones, but rather the propolis is impregnated into the structure, and that smell NEVER goes away. God's peace Roy. Mr. Ed
Not a stupid question. Believe it or not, the bees will cut the rubber bands as soon as they have firmly attached the comb to the frame, and then, they will drag it out of the hive . I always get a kick from seeing rubber bands dangling from the entrance of the bee hive. When I see that, I will pull them out for the bees. Good question. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Here are two links to videos I've made concerning the bee vac. The first link tells how I built the vac and the second explains it's operation, and then used to remove a very large hive......from the same shed this video was videoed at. Thanks for watching. I know that as you work with honey bees, you know you're going to be getting stung at any time. I'm sure there's no way to avoid a sting here and there. But I was wondering, over the years, do you build up a toxicity to constant stinging? Does it get to a point that more stings would become a threat to your health or even your life? Or does bee venom dissipate with time from your system?
Personally, I can't stand to get stung, and regardless that I wear a suit, it still happens often. Oh yeah, it definitely hurts. I am a bit more desensitized, but not immune to the pain. Also, in just a little while, everything is fine. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

PS. The new hive is doing really well and looks good going into the autumn.

for keeping honey off hands?
- or -
not spreading/introducing foreign vuruses/bacteria/fungi

@@mikeries8549 I've been entertaining the idea of building swarm traps out of 2x4s and T-111 and just "accidentally" leaving an opening.
Mr. Ed
This might be a stupid question, but do you keep the rubber bands on permanently?
Not a stupid question. Believe it or not, the bees will cut the rubber bands as soon as they have firmly attached the comb to the frame, and then, they will drag it out of the hive . I always get a kick from seeing rubber bands dangling from the entrance of the bee hive. When I see that, I will pull them out for the bees. Good question. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
How is the long hive doing?
It's doing GREAT! When I start pulling out honey boxes next week, I'll be sure to get a bit of footage on it. God's peace Irvince.
Mr. Ed
Ed, what vacuum setup do you use for these extractions? Would you recommend it?
