'Putin's vulture' helicopter increasing threat to Ukrainian tanks

- As Ukrainian tanks advance toward Russian defences, they face an increasing threat from Russian attack helicopters.
The Ka-52 'Alligator', often compared to the Apache, can hit targets 10km away - beyond the range of Ukraine's portable air defence systems.
There is such a threat being felt by the Russian aircraft that the Ukrainian media have aptly named it 'Putin's vulture'.

The worst enemy is an attack helicopter armed with non-line of sight(NLOS) anti-tank missiles that can strike enemy at a very long distance and close to the ground.
It is pretty lethal, indeed.
Fortunately it's Russian so, eventually, it is also lethal to the pilots 😂
The whole idea of exhausting Russia's armour is quite ridiculous from ukranian point of view 😂. Basically ukranian fighting the European and Asian version of America 😆
@@nohandler1493 Not really, Russia is desperately running out of good armour, the difference is America is actually competant.
@Retrosicotte competent at starting wars and meddling across the globe more like.
@@Retrosicotte there is no proof of that. They are still exporting fighter jets and other important equipment's to Iran's and India. There is a video of Ka-52 dodging Wagners Strela-10. The cameraman almost got taken out by the rocket lol
The missile took out oil storage facility missing the helo. Not bad anyway ;-)
@@ddff3618 Yeah, a (classic)Hollywood moment right there.
The pilot did not dodge it, the helicopter has laser jamming device optics that are automatically targeting incoming missile’s war head, overwhelming its guidance system and make it miss the target - the K52
@@miroslavplancak That system, called Vitebsk btw, has only been manufactured since 2015, there have been many Mi-8s and KA-52 made in the two decades prior to that that Russia still uses and only a fraction have been retrofitted with it. There is a video from the February 2022 showing a manpad firing at a squadron of Mi-8 helicopters, only 3 auto-pop flares, the rest of the pilots then proceed to do it manually.

Manpads max range is 4km. These helicopters can destroy tanks at 10km. They fly low to avoid regular anti-air SAM. So really, you can't stop them without Jets on patrol to force them away. And Jets in the air vs Russian S-300 and S-400 nearby with its 300-400km range, is suicidal for the Jet.
They need F-35, but that would mean all out war with US as Ukraine not trained to fly F-35
@@Epiderm91 lmao this guy really belived the hype now he thinks the f35 is some super jet. This is the exact problem with America, you have no idea what your talking about yet here you are talking
Exactly
Fighter jets are actually almost completely useless against helicopters, the US have done training on this and i belive the American Apache came out on top like 9 out of 10 times, its just propaganda to justify giving them more equipment
@@Epiderm91It wouldn't mean all out war.
It mean Russia will learn about it's capabilities and weaknesses.
Arms manufacring countries tend to keep their most advanced variants as mysterious as possible.
Not knowing and fully understanding the true capabilities is part of deterrence and the weapon's effectiveness.
E.g. If the Russians get enough opportunities to point radars at F35s, they'll get the opportunity to optimize their radars for the F35s radar signiture.
No stealth aircraft is fully stealth. They all have a reduced radar signiture (it makes them appear smaller and thus harder, but not impossible, to detect and target, from the perspective of radar systems).
So, it would be a very bad idea for the US to give Ukraine it's non-outdated stuff.
It's best to use the old stuff to prevent Russia from learning too much about the newer more capable stuff.
It's not a vulture, it's a flying alligator. But if you do want to avoid a vulture, don't present scraps. They are scavengers.

@@suhaib791 yeah but the arty is not in range of the airbase
Yes,a Gephard or one of many AA missile systems.
@@paulbedichek5177so oddly these helicopters are operating in a goldilocks zone for them. They don't have to get right up to the front line and can use laser guided rockets to attack Ukraine armor up to roughly 10kms away. The majority of AA systems are being used to protect vital infrastructure and cities from drone and cruise missile attacks. Stingers have a range of 4kms and 70mm APKW rockets range is 8kms. There's the Hawk system supplied by Spain and Taiwan whichl have a range of 40kms. Then they're is the Patriot system as well. Now that being said these are used to protect vital positions, supplies and civilians. It's a balancing act they have to counter with limited supplies so I have a feeling they would probably stike the air bases or move up some anti AA batteries soon.
@@suhaib791 Ignore the incoming fire? The actual risk of being hit with an artyshell is slim to none, and the pilots would know this.
Bombing a helipad is almost just a dumb a suggestion. They can take of from pretty much any open area, and its even possible to build a heavyduty fieldpad in about 30min if the original is blown up and you think you absolutely must have solid ground for takeoff.
Journalists and their experts isnt always experts, and YT is sometimes right.
The airbase that the helicopters are based at is well beyond the range of HIMAR and artillery. No idea what the commentator is saying about knocking out the airbase with that.
Only thing left is Stormshadow, but too few Stormshadows are in stock and the helicopters are spaced out too far apart in the base where it will be possible to knock them out (without expending a large number of missiles). And recently Stormshadow usage has dropped considerably
S300 is also quite good at intercepting the Storm Shadow
24 of june russia destroyed the second shipment of stormshadow. The first they destroyed in the first week of june. The missiles are tracked from the Uk and russia waits until the warehouses are full before demolishing them.

ATGM's too, "Kornet" ets
Presumably the helicopters aren't flying around looking for tanks while waiting to be shot at. I assume that when ground troops or drones spot oncoming tanks, they call in the helicopters to that specific location. That way the helicopter can just "pop up", launch, and leave within a minute or two.
F16's are not going to make a big difference in the war. Tb2 drones had thier moment, HIMARs had their moment, and the F16 shall have theirs. The Russians need to make this helicopter stealth. It's real bad boy.

I trained to shoot down choppers in a TANK.... If you can get within gun range, he's dead. But the heli can shoot twice your range or more...
It's too short range. The russian helicopters are hiding behind a tree line and are firing away at 8km range, too far for a gepard
The range is too short, but they might be able to pick the KA 52 up on radar to at least warn the rest.
The Ukrainians do have Iris T's as well which have longer range as well as some soviet systems. But the issue there is that the Russians target them if they are to close to the front and the Ukrainians do not have many of them.
Stormers would be a ideal choice. Decent range laser guided fast modern and ideal for anti helicopter

The Ka-52 with tail damage did *not* get it from a SAM. It got it from its own drop tanks! This expert didn't even watch the video they got the footage from.
It was not from the tanks. Watch that video again. Those tanks were jetissoned after the damage already was there. Common practice after damage to remove all exess weight to stay flying.
It is also next to imposible for those tanks to hit the tail with two big rotors pusing them down in the wash after release.
@@XCougar85X Man, I saw a picture of this tail-already on the airfield, I did not see that there were traces of enemy air defense elements on it. I didn't believe the Buck theory myself, but there were no traces of an air defense strike. @@spartanrating8210 Notice the front of the helo has damage, and they fly gear down. Before the tanks are jetisonned.
They fall straight down. The part that flies of may well have been part of the tail, not denying that, but it was not hit by the tank. Or it was another piece that fell down.

Flying tanks!
Isn't this exactly what the Gepard spaags are for? Mobile AA that moves forward with the armoured columns
It is heavily outraged by the attack helicopters missiles.
Gepards need to be able to see, lock and engage those helicopters. Air launched ATGMs will have more range than Gepards to engage. Especially, if Russian helicopters are positioned miles from their lines. Hide behind the tree line or hill, Gepards would only see them for mere seconds if at all. AH-64 Apaches are lethal because of that same tactic. Even more so as ground troops and scout helicopters can “paint” targets for Apaches. Not sure if Russians have that same capability.
Even the upgraded gepard with stinger missiles won't be able to effectively engage the alligator at long ranges unfortunately.
@@TheBongReyes At the very least they would force the alligators to operate at maximum range and therefore minimum effectiveness. To have no mobile AA is suicide.

When the Ukrainians went on the current offensive, there was a video of troops moving to the front in small groups. Each small squad had about 50 antitank and anti aircraft weapons. I would say Putin's vulture has another problems to contend with.
They are trying. But the pilots have to make a mistake (or work with bad intel) to get killed by short range air defense -- as they outrange that. Neither MANPAD nor Gepard can hit them at more than five kilometers range, with the Ka-52 having an ATGM that can be used eight kilometers out. Normally the air force would be supposed to be the counter to tank hunting helicopters (which is why Germany retired the Gepard when deciding what we can afford to keep spending on). Probably not, since the missile is too hard to detect on radar.... However, the gepard could take down the helicopter easily if it's gets in range...
No
Gepards can easily take down any helicopter. But it has to be in range and have enough time to engage the target. Manpads can easily do the same job. But again, it has to be able to see and target the helicopters. If Russian attack helicopters are engaging behind Russian lines and using “pop-up” tactics, the window to target, lock and engage is very limited. That’s the reason why AH-64s were so effective against Iraq and how Apaches were able to mail Wagner forces in Syria.
As the video stated, you have to be able to see those Ka-52s to shoot them down. Early in the war, Ukraine was able to shoot down many Russian aircraft because they were on the defensive. Attacking brings more danger no matter how skill your forces are and how bad the defending forces are.

1) Use the Gepards the West apparantly has provided this year according to Wiki: On 26 April 2022, the German government authorized Krauss-Maffei Wegmann to transfer 50 refurbished Flakpanzer Gepard anti-aircraft vehicles to Ukraine.[30] The first three Gepards arrived in Ukraine on 25 July 2022.[31] By 8 March 2023, 34 Gepards had been delivered, with an additional 3 still being prepared.[32] On 13 May 2023, the German Defence Ministry announced an additional fifteen Gepards would be sent to Ukraine,[33] bringing the total number pledged to 52. Problem: Gepard sees helico's coming while still 15 km away (helico sees tanks at 10 km), but Gepard only can hit Alligators from about 5 km (while Alligator destroyys tanks from 10 km)
2) Hence: the UA needs capabilities to destroy the Ka's at max while on the ground, preferably parked closely together. Special commando's, artillery etc., they all should focus on them. Take the Alligators out, and all of a sudden a lot becomes possible.
