Great review Joe. I have the 2019 Adventure so definitely recognize the similarities but I have to give it to em on this one (especially the lunar rock that you reviewed). A part of me wishes I had waited for this one but I really love mine (minus a few issues that I’ve had with noise coming from the brakes and also from the transfer case). Toy seems to have good capacity from the start. Already seeing these everywhere. I think this is the class leader as far as sales. Seems the TRD branding prices this too high for what you get. They must have big margins/markup on this little compact.

It's a very tempting car. I liked the adventure 19 adventure RAV4. I would have talked my wife into looking into the RAV4 if it were out in 18 we ended up with a 18 limited subaru Crosstrek. Over all the Crosstrek is a great car but a little letdown with the power transmission and mpg compared to the weak hp.

$44K for a fully loaded 2020 RAV4 TRD or $45k for a one-owner 4Runner TRD Pro at CarMax that someone couldn't afford or otherwise realized was too much for groceries? I think the choice is absurdly clear, as much as my fiance and I wanted to fall in love with this new, overdue offering from Toyota. Now if it was $44k fully loaded and came in TRD Pro then US consumers would have a reasonably easier swallow here.

I have the 2019 Trail. Great vehicle. But, I agree with you also. The Rav should have electric passenger seat, more storage also heated outside mirrors. When will Toyota ever increase hp by around 20-30 more? Never ever had a Toyota Rav before, but they do sell a lot of them and they hold their value. I lease mine, and may get a TRD next.

So many features in this vehicle that seem basic, that aren't include in the $40k+ current gen Tacomas. Been looking at a Tacoma for half a year now, but it's so difficult to justify such an expensive truck with so few features and horrible gas mileage. This Rav4 TRD Off Road could be the winner!

I was a Asst parts manager for Toyota for a lot of years, the zonks are so minimal, the 2.5L gives you more horse power then others in this class and it is a time tested engine, we are talking all the bugs have been addressed in this engine, the stitching zonks are just preference to who ever likes it, yes there should have been an under carriage engine deflector but then it would have added more weight and come on who are we kidding who is going to take this rock climbing, the noise issue is correct BUT if you are looking for a quieter vehicle TRD is not your style, the issue of the beefier sound out of the tail pipe, again if you are looking to pull up and sound like a RAM 1500 Rebel then well 10K more will get you a rebel, overall you cant buy a better vehicle in this class, RAV 4 has always and will always blow the competition away, what I like to see is NO C.V.T transmission, I am the Parts manager for a large salvage yard now and I sell a lot of those junk cvt crap transmissions that fail at 80k, I do miss working for Toyota tho, You give the best walk video's out there, if anyone is reading this and are looking for a vehicle in this class ...just go buy a Rav 4 you wont be disappointed even if you get the less expensive packages...you get more for your money with Toyota and an awesome company that stands by their customers.....Done

Why won't the windshield defogger button come on my 2020 rave4 LE after its set to come on when I start the engine to warm up and melt snow of the windshield the next day by using my remote key fob but it defaults to a slower fan speed instead of the full on defogger fan speed to melt ice an snow? jonnyfish76 the reliability of the Subaru cvt’s still have yet to be proven. I have a 2018 Impreza sport and I’m very disappointed with the CVT. Very lurchy/laggy at slow speed or going up any kind of hill. Luckily I’m only leasing it. Maybe they’ve improved the cvt’s since then or the higher models have a better one but I’m not impressed with it.
The outback only has buttons to change the temperature up and down. Everything else is involved in the screen. It should at least also have a physical fan speed control.

I own a 2024 TRD Off Road. The first thing I had to do is replace the Falken 01A Tires which have only about 1/4" of tread, for the real Falken 100H tires, which are Severe Snow Rated. The stock tires are not Severe Snow Rated. Shame on Toyota for putting these crappy 01A tires on this vehicle. The real Falken tires are not noisy, and handle much better in the snow. The TRD Off Road also adds an Engine Oil Cooler and Transmission Fluid Cooler with Heavy Duty 150 Amp Alternator. Towing is double all other RAV4s to 3400 pounds. The ground clearance is only 1" less than a 4Runner! No Start/Stop on my model!

The rav4 adventure is better when it comes to the interior With the lunar rock and the ice edge roof with the mocha white interior with the orange accent of the adventure trim looks beautiful than the trd off road, The rav4 has the best fuel economy with the eco mode and save fuel on long road trips which the 4Runner or Tacoma or tundra does not have, the rav4 only has Toyota safety sense which the 4Runner Tacoma and tundra don’t have, I can turn the rav4 in a camping conversion to camp inside the rav4, I can make the rav4 adventure more off road capable by lifting up the rav4 adventure 3 inches more from 8.6 inches to 8.9 inches more of ground clearance and getting the aftermarket bfgoodrich ko2 all terrain off road tires and go with the rav4 for serious off roading and keep up with the 4Runner Tacoma and on unforgiving rough trails and have off road adventures

The BMW X3 has a bi Turbo 2 L that has about 260 horsepower with the ZF 8-speed and that is fast little SUV. Rav 4 have always been kind of crude loud rough riding little SUVs over arated if you ask me. But that I think this is the class leader in the segment so whatever they're doing something right.

    • @ATRichard

HiPlains1 I agree, RAV4s are very soft driving but still kinda rough around the edges SUVs in my opinion. My 2018 Compass and 2004 Bravada feel more refined on the road. But what they’re “doing right” is the price. Assuming you don’t want a fully-loaded $40,000 Adventure, Limited or TRD Off-Road RAV4, you can get one of these things for high $20k to low $30k. At that price, people care less about refinement I feel because they’re looking for a “good deal”. Yes, the BMW is definitely a nicer SUV than any of the ones I currently have or a RAV4, but I suspect you have far more people out here that can afford a $20-30k SUV than a $40-60k SUV, even though the latter is the more desirable vehicle. At $40,000, you may as well consider something more “luxurious” than a RAV4, that’s for certain.

  • @jjacob25101
    @jjacob25101 4 года назад

Finally! Great video, Joe! If I had money to get a variety of vehicles, it would include this for me urban assault vehicle SUV. The Adventure is nice, too, which is what this is based on, but you got the heavy duty hardware. I like the 4Runner TRD Pro, but I think you know, unless I need the extra size and horsepower, I like the size of this, and the Subaru Forester Sport for utility, and comfort on the street.
I agree with pretty much everything you said here, including the zonks. For a TRD, it should have skid plates and underbody protection, fir the Adventure, too, or at least be an optional accessory. If not, maybe the aftermarket can address this.
The exhaust is no biggie, being an SUV, and not street performance like the Camry TRD, which has a bigger engine to generate the sound, but it would be nice. An additional zonk from me for not blacking out the rear hatch chrome Toyota emblem. But if it's the standard size, like the Csmry, you can get the kit to put the black overlay on it.
Like the others there could be more red stitching and trim level personalization, especially the interior. I can imagine for top of the line luxury and touring trims, all the power stuff is understandable, but for sport performance, I would rather have manual address seats, steering column, etc. More functional, and less to go wrong, but like you said, it should be included at this price point. The shaky radio just may be intentional to take up the shock of heavy, high speed frequency off roading vibration from rattling the circuitry inside.
As far as the engine, it has 200 HP and 0 to 60 8 seconds, like my 1984 Buick GN that had a bigger, turbo 3.8L engine. So, I think it's decent and sufficient, unless it needs more power for off road endeavors, but I understand it was not I tended to be a rock crawler, but like a heavier duty version of the Adventure, where you could go off road high speed, like Baja type racing, or riding, without killing the off road shocks, which happens to many so called bigger 4×4 heavy duty trucks and SUVs driving 35+ MPH on unpaved roads for several miles and killed the shocks...
While primarily modified for offroad prowess, I remember quotes from Toyota stating it was addressing even better street ride and handling over the Adventure, and other Rav4 trims.
As far as the front seat rear seat map/storage pockets, I can't see why they just can't put 2 of them, if they have them at all. I wish some if the cars. Like the Honda Civic Sport models had them. I forgot if the Si does.
Ultimately, I would rather just have the Camry TRD with the option package, but for a good mid sized heavy duty SUV, this is probably the best, and most durable and reliable.

They blackout all the emblems except the Toyota logo on the back? Zonk! No skid plate on a TRD Off Road is ridiculous. Proof that this is about looks. I like the idea but think Toyota missed some stuff especially for $40k.

I think it's the TRD branding they really get a lot for that and it doesn't look like it's bringing much more to this. I wouldn't doubt the TRD addition cost 5000 more and probably cost Toyota five hundred bucks more in actual features it's a gimmick but people buy these. Definitely the most insulting thing at this price point is the 200 horsepower engine I mean others will get you about 60 horsepower more with boosted motors. Toyota is like apple when it comes to prices. They charge 42k because they can. They probably don't have to discount either.
