I've been waiting for this!!! I've been to Biltmore several times, also during Christmas. Absolutely stunning every time! My favorite is the library. The Vanderbilt family made their money from railroad industry. George, who built the house, did not manage money very well, but their only daughter's husband took over and began to make profit. George's father was a philanthropist and began Vanderbilt University in Nashville. The grounds were designed by Fredrick Olmsted, the same guy who designed Central Park in NY!! Sorry for the history lesson, I love it there!
Ooo, thank you for the brief little history lesson! I don’t know why I never thought about the connection between the Biltmore and Vanderbilt University. 🤦🏼♀️ I’m also a little surprised neither Joel or Lia mentioned that Anderson Cooper is a Vanderbilt… though maybe that’s not mentioned on the tour?
@@karinwtfont They do not mention Gloria or Anderson on the tour. You have to do your own research to find that out.
Olmsted also designed the grounds for the US Capitol and the White House.
Would they even know who Anderson Cooper is? To my knowledge, Anderson Cooper is not on any of the CNN programming that airs in the U.K. and Europe. The CNN content that airs there is more elevated and focuses on the entire world, every continent every day, not just the U.S. like the U.S. version. Also, Gloria and Anderson are not descendants of George Vanderbilt. Gloria was the granddaughter of his brother, Cornelius, who had nothing to do with this estate.
@@karinwtfont I don't know about J&L, but Anderson Cooper isn't a household name outside the U.S., for the most part.
Being a finish carpenter for 25 years, I'm very impressed by the workmanship and can't imagine the labor hours it took to mill and hang all that expensive lumber.
why are there no swedish or norwegian carpenters
@@katzgar In high school, my boss would hire a Scandinavian stone mason for his huge home.
@@katzgar I give up. Why?
I've always wondered how long it took to build by hand from start to finish??? Absolutely amazing woodwork and craftsmanship put into the Biltmore house as well as hidden doors and secret tunnels put into the house in places...
You will notice there is no molding at the floor. The walls are scribed to the floor perfectly instead.
That was just so beautiful and amazing. This is just one of hundreds of castles throughout the United States. Look up American Castles. Also look up incredible American Estates and mansions of the gilded age. Get away from the cities, there is so much to see all over America, which is the size of all of Europe, and don't forget all our famous National parks and Seashore resorts!
My favourite things are the 19th century asylums and state hospitals that were built in the US. They were made like castles, chateaus, manors etc. My favourite one of all was Richard Olmsted in Buffalo, New York. Looks like it could play good in a Halloween movie, but looks a lot like the Rosenborg Castle in Denmark, but in my opinion, it looks better than Rosenborg.
I'm so glad you guys went to the biltmore! I would love to see you guys visit more American iconic places like this instead of staying in downtown areas where it's just Starbucks and generic markets.
So much more to see, you guys drove and went on a real adventure and saw something really memorable!
And it made for a great video!
Thanks Jack! We’re getting more and more confident to do this type of thing!
❤️❤️

@@ThoseTwoBrits1 Don't worry ....My Estate Ravenswood will be equal....it'll be a cozy net for us fair maiden
Agreed! I don’t care to watch Hooters or starbies. I like the cultural vids. And more of the UK 🇬🇧
No words can describe how absolutely beautiful and stunning that was, and you did such a great job. That is a castle not a house. Just breathtaking! Loved it!! ♥️♥️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
The Vanderbilts owned railroads and made fortunes but lived very extravagantly. They built many beautiful mansions and spent all of their money and none of it is left. Most of them have nothing left any longer. The late Gloria Vanderbilt started her own fashion line and designer jean company in the 1970s and made herself wealthy and her son Anderson Cooper is a successful television journalist. If you ever take a tour of New England and tour Rhode Island the vacation destination of Newport is where the Vanderbilt Family built several summer homes on Bellevue Ave during the Gilded Age (1870-1900) that are absolutely spectacular. Also if you visit New England you should visit Boston Massachusetts as well as Cape Cod Massachusetts in the summer. As Britts you’ll really enjoy the region a lot.
Yes! Come to Newport there are multiple mansions, not as big as Biltmore House because they were only summer "cottages". Still worth visiting.
The Gilded Age on HBO, when the Vanderbilt were the new money.
Yes, Newport RI is great! New England altogether is wonderful! Right up their alley after Charleston, Savannah, and St. Augustine!
@@Dularr One of the rail lines between New York and Chicago was nicknamed "the nickel plate road" because it was rumored the rails were gilded in nickel.
Olmsted designed the entrance drive over 2 miles long because that showed extreme, boundless wealth. Most people even in New York barely had 2 miles of land let along a mere driveway. The estate was originally 110,000 acres but most of it was given to the Pisgah National Forest next door.
Was designed so that around every turn the view changed.
I really want y’all to come back during the middle of October! Fall in western NC is STUNNING!
I went to the Biltmore 3 years ago in October and all but one room was completely decorated for Christmas. Each room had a tree and decorations different from the other rooms. Fantastic day. We ate at the stable, took a property tour, a house tour and a back of the house tour. So beautiful. We were the second ones there that day and have some awesome selfies with nobody around us but the Biltmore.
Though the family stopped living in the mansion in the 1950s, it is still owned and run as a tourist attraction by the fourth generation of Vanderbilt descendants.
This home is now owned by the Cecil family. This is the same Cecil family who own Burleigh House. One of the Vanderbilt daughters married into the Cecil family and their sons inherited the estate, so Biltmore has a connection to the English aristocracy.
I live about 55 miles away from there! I hope y'all was told facts about the Biltmore house. Did you know that he owned around 125,000 Biltmore acres in total? It took the owner over a two-hour carriage ride from where the property originally started to his front door. When he died his wife gave most of the land to the US Government to help create a nation forest!
Can you imagine actually living there?! And they have a different room for every meal. Where is the afternoon snack and midnight snack rooms?😁
I was thrilled to be part of your tour. I have a friend who lives in Ashville, and I've wanted to see the Biltmore for ages, but never was able to travel there. Thank you so much!
My grandpa had a landscaping company and I helped him do the brick side walk going into the estate the brick wall ways in the garden and the bricks at the Winery. Also we did the side walks in the Biltmore village by that really nice McDonald’s and the Starbucks. But yeah as a kid I would carry the bricks off of pallets to his workers so I carry most of the bricks out there.
For my many parts of the US, autumn and spring weather is unpredictable. We usually dress in layers and peel them off as the day goes on until it starts getting chilly and we have to put them all back on again. 😂 Throw in an umbrella for an unexpected rain shower and you’re set!
Btw, this was not made just for them. Read some books by Edith Wharton on how the rich lived in 1900. What they would do is, go as a group to someone's country house, and stay there for a long time, a weekend, sometimes a month. And dinner was this big party every night. So yeah this was probably built to accommodate 50-100 of their closest friends, lol. That's one reason they needed it big.
Before they began construction, they laid a railroad line to the estate in order to transport the enormous amount of building materials to what was then forest land. If you were impressed by this tour, you have to return during the Christmas holidays. They erect 6 or 7 trees in the different main rooms each tree reaches the ceiling & each is decorated differently. Also, there were fires in the fireplaces when we toured the estate about 25 yrs. ago. Now after your tour did you drive over to their vineyard to the wine tasting room?
I and a lady I was dating at the time(30 years ago or more) did the wine tasting once. We had not ate all day so we were tasting all the wines on empty stomaches. Needless to say we got a bit drunk. We got back into our car, drove down one of the estate roads, parked behind some bushes and went to sleep. It was a great day hahaha
The bed is also raised up so it looks smaller. The round tub is amazing in his bathroom. Christmas time when it’s decorated is the best, if you come back do it and the nighttime tour. Family still lives on the estate but not in the home. Isn’t it odd to call that place a home, but it was for George and Edith
From what the tour guides used to say the Cecil family, who are descendants of the Vanderbilts, only ever used the house on Christmas, which is one of the only days it is closed. Not sure how true that is, tour guides have been known to embellish. And, Joel was right, it is spectacular at Christmas. If y'all ever get the opportunity your should return during Christmastime.
Biltmore is amazing. They have a beautiful Christmas nighttime tour. They have a chores performing and a Harp or Piano on every floor. The Christmas trees are beyond.
You guys should travel to Cherokee, NC and take The Great Smoky Mountains Parkway over to Gatlinburg, TN. It's a must do for sure! The views will last forever!
12:57 I love it when Legends make it happen. Great job Scott for representing the fans.
They decorate it so beautifully at Christmas time. It looks magical.
I grew up three miles from there. When I was 10 our 4th grade class did a field trip there. Some workmen were doing repairs and one of them gave me one of the original handmade bricks. It has "Biltmore" stamped on it in large capital letters. The year pass is a much better deal as the house decorations change with the season as does the grounds. Fall, Christmas and spring are the best times, spring flowers being my favorite.
Literally the JEEP is a community and all around the US there are JEEP CLUBS🥰there also are Corvette clubs, Mustang clubs!!
While the house and grounds are spectacular, I think our two British hosts were the best attraction. I love their reactions. I mean, how can you not love them. They are showing me my own country which I may never get to see in person. It's nice to see it through innocent eyes.
Christmas at Biltmore is magical as is spring in the gardens.
Hopefully you guys can make it to Newport, RI to see more lovely homes and also San Simeon in California. ❤️❤️❤️
I went to the America's Cup in '83 in Newport Rhode Island and got to see some of those houses at the same time that we lost the cup to the Australians but I had a great time and my grandparents lived in Cambria California 6 mi away from San Simeon so we got to see the castle all the time even got to photograph some of the horses that belong to the Hearst's!
My favorite (favourite) place in North Carolina. As a 6th generation North Carolian I think you have judged my hometown and home state very fairly. I grant you both a gold star. Ya'll come back :)
Thank you for taking us along with you on the tour.
Absolutely magnificent !!!
I know I'll never make it there to see it in person, so thank you for sharing your experience.
Love to all 💞
Love the interior shots and music. The grounds omg. I bet it’s spectacular at Christmas. 🎄
It is. They decorates the whole estate in Christmas decorations .
Been waiting for the Biltmore Tour. Beautiful place. Glad you guys liked it.
The USA 🇺🇸 is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing Joel and Lia. Can't wait to relocate there. Al

@@passingthroughtime3033 Thank you! I love it! Grazie 🇺🇸
The best time to go to the Biltmore is during the Christmas Holidays..it is so beautifully decorated. Thank You for taking us along on your tour of the grand estate.
Very nice, Joel and Lia. This was so interesting and is exactly the type of video that shows the true America. What would be icing on the cake would be a video on downtown Asheville with it's unique shops and restaurants. Very nice video, indeed.
I love the Biltmore. The hotel and village is fun too.
as a NC native...I literally have tears!!!! I've been waiting for this VIDEO!!!!!!!!!! thank you !!!!!!!
Been really looking forward to this! It sounded like so much fun and I can’t wait to go someday. ☺️🌟 Audio tours are so awesome, I love how you get so much information about The building and specific details about certain rooms or events that might have been held there. 🙌👏💜❤️
This Brought back memories of When I visited The Biltmore with my family When I was 7yrs old in 1985.
Welcome to the Gilded Age and the Vanderbilt family. And did you know that CNN news man Anderson Cooper is a Vanderbilt? His mother was Gloria Vanderbilt famous for her clothing designs in the 70s.
Thanks for the tour M'Legends! I've been waiting for the Biltmore video since the NC nightly live streams. Joel, I wish you captioned in the video what you were saying about the gymnasium, I couldn't hear or understand you other than you were agape most of the time.
I've been to the Biltmore I think three times, and it is GINORMOUS in person!! Photos and videos don't do it justice. My favorite trip was one Spring when everything was blooming. The gardens are magnificent, especially the azaleas and roses.
I remember going there every time my parents and I stayed in Asheville and learning about how my relatives built the place. I've still got the book guide we bought at the shop. Even though we could get discounted passes at the Nashville Zoo because the two sisters were our relatives too, we couldn't get discounted passes at the Biltmore. But we paid for year-long memberships and we enjoyed every bit of it! Make sure that if you come back to Asheville that you go multiple days because like at Disney World, you simply can't do or see everything in one day. So glad you enjoyed it!
I’ve been waiting for this video! Glad you both enjoyed your time there 😎
Welcome to NC weather, we have multiple seasons in the same week sometimes.
Really liked the footage approach. Helps give a sense of what you’re reacting too. Great video!
I went to Biltmore years ago but it is still amazing! The gardens are lovely too.
Lia, you and Ach could buy the Biltmore and refurbish it as an HOA for 1,200 units, en suites. That would be a good project! Just check for damp 🤣
So beautiful! Thank you for posting travel videos like this! It reminds me of places to see!
The music makes it sound like you're in one of those British period dramas, or short films.
I don't know if you know this but that Biltmore water bottle is actually a desani water lol
That is reporter from CNN Anderson Cooper's grandparents house, Gloria Vanderbilt [ JEANS] was his mother. It reminds me a lot of the Hearst castle in CA.
STUNNING! Christmas there definitely is magical! They decorate all natural like they did in the era it was built. They have a huge tree in the front foyer and they have Carolers walking about. Really fun. Wonderful video guys!💜
I’m an Asheville native. The house is only a tourist attraction now. No current inhabitants there. Christmas is the time to go for sure. If you know someone who works at the house, there are loads of secret passageways and hidden doors throughout the house that connect via a series of tunnels. Some doors open by pressing down a screw on the wall.
Thank you for bringing us along with you. Love the views.
The Biltmore is actually a designated historic landmark and currently is being looked after by the Cecil family. It is not currently lived in at all. it is a tourist attraction as of long ago. it is currently registered in the national park service so can not be inhabited.
Only the Winchester house is weirder as its completely haunted. Built by Sarah Winchester on a skeletal house she just kept building until her death. The house was built with the purpose of confusing the ghosts of the Winchester legacy as she was the only person to inherit the gun company and she got the spirits of those killed by the gun. at the end of her life she built 8 kitchens, 23 bathrooms, 100 bedrooms, random staircases that go nowhere, doors that open into walls or the outside, random trapdoors, and who knows what else. The ghosts that reside in the house are mostly wild west characters but Sarah herself is among the ghosts in the house. When sarah died the workman stopped in their tracks literally half nails sticking out or walls barely laid. the workmen literally ran from the house but they got paid. its just werid.
The Cecils are descendants of the Vanderbilts though, and they still own it, right? Last I heard it's still "Vanderbilt" owned.
😳😳😳 Wow, the Winchester house sounds really intriguing! You didn’t mention where it is. It’s in San Jose, California (in the San Francisco area, part of Silicon Valley) 💐
@@goosebump801 is it a place you can tour through ? It definitely sounds interesting.
My understanding is that it's still privately owned by members of the Vanderbilt family, and thus cannot be part of the national park system.
@@goosebump801 it's in Asheville, NC...
I've viewed several Biltmore tour videos and yours is the most enjoyable of them all! Thanks!
The Vanderbilt family still live in the estate and the estate is still owned by the family. They have built a hotel that you can stay at and there are several event spaces that you can rent including weddings, the estate also has a winery, and a lot of the produce and meat are produced on the estate.
False
Wow Wow Wow!! Thanks for taking us on this tour, it was GREAT!!
Been waiting for this one!
Stunning!
❤💗
This was sooo good! I felt like i was there with you guys!🙌🏽
I loved the turquoise couch and chairs & the white fireplace with painted tiles. Beautiful.
The family does not live there, but they are still working on curating other rooms in the house. My husband and I are annual pass holders, and the wine tasting tours are awesome. Glad you guys enjoyed it.
Jeeps are an American icon, they make every accessory you can imagine for that vehicle and they are prized by many. They also hold their value very well. In my opinion with your guys' personality and what you guys do, in my eyes the Jeep suits your guys's lifestyle. Like if you were Americans you'd be the target audience for Jeeps. I picture you guys as like bougie California 🤣😂 not in a bad way... Somebody back me up here
I'll back you up. Yes, Jeep would definitely have them as brand ambassadors. And to your other point, the resale value is so high, you can pay MORE for a used one today, compared to brand new.
That vehicle is a descendant of the general purpose (GP) vehicles used by the US military during the second world war. Willy's-Overland, a military contractor of the day, made it a personal vehicle after the war. And from there it became an icon. The Jeep brand now belongs to the Chrysler division of Stellantis.
Looks like a great place to see. Reminds me of the Winchester House in San Jose.
I was stuck in Charlotte for a day due to a flight cancelation and stayed downtown. Because of your Charlotte video, I visited the Public Market and knew about the mall. It was a great day. I want to go back for a planned visit.
The Vanderbilt family still owns Biltmore but it ceased to be a family residence in 1956.
You guys are hysterical. You’re like the professor in the Doctor Who Titanic Christmas special, who was an “expert” on earth people and customs but had everything conflated or misconstrued. Lol. Of course the family doesn’t live there anymore!
I would love to visit Biltmore. Thanks for the sneak peek!
The estate also produces wine. If you didn't get to try it, it's carried by Harris Teeter and the Fresh Market.
This was really great to see. Thanks
Ok, for your next usa trip may you consider going to Hearst Castle and staying in Pismo Beach, touring morro bay/ Pismo area for 1 week ? 🙂
I loved "where's the prosecco?" LOL!!
Lovely video thank you so much.❤️
Such a great vid! Isn’t it lovely?! Wish I still lived there and could have met up with you guys. And yes, the Asheville weather is all over the place 🤪 Hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip. Cheers!
Wow what a beautiful place! Glad you enjoyed going here.
The small bed lol. I thought the same thing when I went to castles in europe. I think it's a bit of an optical illusion that a large bed with a large framework around it in an enormous room looks small. But if you put a queen size bed in a small bedroom it looks enormous! With the giant pillows and the big structure around the bed I think it made it look much smaller than it actually is.
Kind of like big TVs at a department store, they look decently sized, and then you put them in your living room and they are absolutely huge and dominate the entire room. It's all about scale I think LOL
So glad you went there! It's amazing.
I see that Joel dressed for the occasion. He wore a collared shirt, though it was flannel, haha!
I’ve always wanted to see it. Thank y’all for sharing. This is definitely going to go on my bucket list to see. Money is tight right now but I will save up to see it. Love y’all
I visited the Biltmore years back, it is a work of art. My woman and I stayed at the Greyetone Inn, it was fantastic our acconadations there were magical and I highly recommend it for the grounds, golf and the beautiful lake, our stay included a great bass boat for fishing or a cruise around the large lake. Nice getaway to N. Carolina.
I grew up in Asheville, right there in the Biltmore area. So sweet that you two chose to visit Biltmore Estate. My Jr/Sr Prom was held there on the estate.
I can't wait to go there! It's so close by and I just never remember it when I'm planning a day! Thanks for reminding me!
That was awesome. Will be there in mid-August!!
Have fun, Michael!!
I love Asheville's weather, the views, the Biltmore estate, the quick and easy access to other NC Mountain attractions like Chimney Rock and the changing of the seasons.
Sadly, I absolutely DETEST the city of Asheville itself because of what it has become over the last 20-30 years due to outside influences turning it into possibly one of the most "niche" cities in America where on a recent trip 6 years ago, out of the 20 people I interacted with on one day, not a single one was from there but they ALL had migrated in with their own concept of operating their own "coffee shop" or "art gallery" that catered to such a small group of people that you couldn't possibly imagine the shop being open for more than 3 months after the "grand opening" wore off. And sadly, I've met more people who moved to Asheville and FAILED to run a business than I have who actually were BORN in Asheville.
My favorite part of the tour is going out on the veranda, looking out at the mountains, and pretending you're having breakfast at your home. 😆
The biltmore is fantastic around Christmas. They do apple cider and all that and have everything decorated for the holidays it’s magical
Great video guys. I have lived in the western Carolinas all my life and have been to Biltmore many times. It is truly an awesome place.
I’ve always wanted to go. At least I was able to live vicariously with the Legends! 🤭
So gorgeous and opulent! I am definitely going to have to visit sometime around the holidays. I live in California. Another amazing estate to check out if ever visit California again, is Hearst Castle in San Simeon.
The Jeep community is nice. I had a Wrangler for 15yrs. Fellow owners always wave. I have had a Mini Cooper for the past 6yrs. They don't ever wave hello. Haha!
The weather you described is exactly what we experienced in London in March this year!
I love you guys visiting the USA. Please do more states!
Journalists Anderson Cooper is a descendent of the home’s original owner George Washington Vanderbilt. Anderson’s mom was Gloria Vanderbilt who was George’s great niece. George named his estate Biltmore. The family’s name was actually Vanderbilt.
This is the video I've been waiting for and I loved it 😊💗 So beautiful! And Lia 🖐 a wave from a fellow Kia owner 😄
Great video. Best inside video of the home I’ve seen. I subscribed so I’m on your journey. Keep up the great videos. Look up mackinaw island in Michigan. Outlawed cars way back and is still horse and bicycle. Great tourist spot!!!
You’re right....the Christmas decorations are amazing!! Close to 100 Christmas trees in and around the house.
This is where they filmed the cinema masterpiece 'Private Eyes'.
The family does not still live there, but they manage the estate and live on the land in other houses. They have also developed a whole neighborhood of houses, and they built a fancy hotel on the property also. Lia, you could have afternoon tea at their hotel!!!
EEEK. YOU’RE AT MY FAVORITE AMERICAN PLACE TO VISIT EVER! It’s amazing. I’ve been twice when they had Downton Abbey exhibits. So fabulous. It’s my fantasy to actually live there. It’s the closest we have to a castle in America. The park and ride isn’t bougie. It’s smart and convenient. Because it goes to all the stops and you don’t have to park and then walk forever! It’s included.
On an historical note, in one of the sitting rooms, there is a print if Albrecht Curler’s block print of a rhinoceros. This was made from an “eyewitness account” and not from first hand knowledge by the artist in 1515. My daughter and I had first seen this print in an old book chained to the wall of a library in a church in Grantham, England in 2016. The priest there was so nice to give us a personal tour of the church that was built in the 1300’s. Books used to be chained up in libraries so they wouldn’t get stolen. We were looking at a copy that would have dated close to the time of the original printing. And I only realized how significant this was when I saw the print on the wall at the Biltmore! For any Downton fans here, Grantham is a real place in Lincolnshire, about 1-1/2 hours train ride from Kings Cross station (where Harry and the Weasleys take platform 9-1/2!). Not in the north as is portrayed in Downton abbey. Grantham is a bedroom community with a nice downtown shopping area and middle class homes (we’d call it a bedroom community here). Lincolnshire is the home of Lincoln, where Lincoln cathedral is, which houses a copy of the Magna Carta, which we toured in that trip. It’s very amazing. And it was full circle for me to see the rhino at the Biltmore!
