*Angmar: The Realm of the Witch-king*
Angmar, a dark and desolate realm in the northern reaches of Middle-earth, was established in the Third Age by the Witch-king, the chief of the Nazgûl and servant of Sauron. Positioned in the cold, mountainous region north of the Ettenmoors, Angmar's geography was harsh and forbidding, with the towering Mountains of Angmar and the dark fortress of Carn Dûm serving as the Witch-king's stronghold.
The inhabitants of Angmar were a mix of evil Men, Orcs, Trolls, and other dark creatures, all under the Witch-king’s command. These forces were marshaled to wage a long and devastating campaign against the Dúnedain of the northern kingdom of Arnor. The tactical importance of Angmar lay in its strategic location, allowing the Witch-king to launch assaults on Arnor from the north while remaining relatively secure in his stronghold.
The history of Angmar is one of relentless warfare. The Witch-king, with the support of Sauron, sought to weaken and eventually destroy the northern Dúnedain. This goal was nearly achieved as Angmar's forces overran much of Arnor, leading to the fragmentation of the kingdom into smaller, weaker states. The final blow came at the Battle of Fornost, where the Witch-king was eventually defeated by a coalition of forces led by Eärnur, the last King of Gondor, and the Elves of Lindon. Despite this defeat, the Witch-king's legacy endured as Angmar's influence left the north in ruins, and the terror he sowed lingered in the memories of the Free Peoples.
Angmar’s history is a testament to the power and malice of the Witch-king, whose presence in Middle-earth foreshadowed the greater darkness to come with Sauron’s resurgence. The fall of Angmar marked the end of an era of northern resistance, but it also signified the resilience and ultimate victory of those who opposed the shadow. The ruins of Angmar and its fortress, Carn Dûm, remained as grim reminders of the Witch-king's reign and the enduring struggle against the forces of darkness in Middle-earth.
