I've written this story here before but I feel it's still relevant. My roommate's Macbook Pro wouldn't boot. He took it in to an Apple Certified Service Provider, they charged him $80 for "diagnostic costs" and then told him he needed repairs worth $1300, more than a new MBP would be at the time. My friend was gutted, but the ACSP was "helping" him find a new Macbook to replace his current "broken" one.
I took a look at the list of things they had to replace and was in disbelief. They wanted to replace his optical drive for $300 (!!!), just for parts not even for the labor. They wanted to replace his keyboard which he just had replaced and they needed to replace his entire logic board.
I suspected that it was just a simple hard drive cable that went bad. I swapped his HDD into my Macbook Pro and it all booted up fine. My HDD in his MBP wouldn't work. 10 Minutes of "troubleshooting" and I found the issue. Got a new HDD cable for $30 and his laptop was working again.
We went back to the ACSP to get his money back for the diagnostics and initially they were reluctant until I started explaining loudly exactly what they'd done, what they wanted to charge my friend for and what really was the issue in front of all the other customers there. Only then were they willing to refund him his money.
This was the most prominent Apple certified store in our city, we didn't have an Apple store (I think there's only one real Apple store in our country). Why should I trust Apple to make proper repairs when they've clearly shown time and time again that they don't repair stuff, they just replace it and 99% of the time also lose all your data in the process?
Hope you, your employees and your store are OK Louis!

antred11. It is fraud and in almost any other industry you will find yourself in a world of hurt trying those tactics. We have seen cases in my city where shady mechanic shops would replace far more than they needed to. The more prominent one was a car that just needed new spark plugs and wires, possibly a new coil pack. What the shop did was claim the engine was blown and replace the engine as well as transmission. That shop was sued into oblivion over that mess. Didn't matter the car ran afterward, the fact they replaced so much when so little was really needed was held against them hard.

This whole situation is worrying me A LOT.
I live in Prague and we do iPhone LCD/OLED refurbishment for Central Europe (Mainly CZ/GER)
This whole bullshit with Apple preventing 3rd party repairs in general is driving us insane. Like every new Apple device has fewer and fewer 3rd party replacable parts. It's my freaking right if I want to void my warranty (if it's not out yet anyway) and repair it at John Smith store coz he's a handyman who won't take 1200$$$ for battery replacement. iPhone is just as much piece of electronics as a vacuum cleaner.
Lol, can't wait for Apple to tie battery to the motherboard so that you can't replace battery without some synchronizing device.
Apple are walking on REALLY thin ice with that. They could get so much money if they collaborated with 3rd party stores like us, but then they won't look so "premium" and "unique", I guess.
Apple is nothing more but a school hooligan wearing sunglasses. After learning how iPhones and MacBooks work I don't even have any wish to have them fixed in any authorized store. The cost of the repair is extremely low if you know what to do. Even if you put original stuff in where it's needed (for most parts it doesn't even matter if the part is original due to their technological simplicity).
P.S. From what I know (not sure but I think it's true), the closest to Prague(1.3mil population) AUTHORIZED repair store of Apple is in...GERMANY! Dresden. 2 hours by train. And this is a fcking Central Europe!

It's very easy for them, for example Apple Monaco (Monaco being a 0% corporation tax haven) lends Apple US $4 Billion at 1000% APR so at the end of the year Apple US pays off the loan costing them $40 Billion which comes off their profits so reduces the tax they pay, the objective of these companies is either break even or operate at a loss where make their sales and make huge profits in 0% tax havens.
The problem is that is very simplified it's in reality a very complicated manipulation of international tax laws which is only realistic for huge multi national companies but it's something that could be easily stopped by governments but they don't because they make our politicians and lawmakers very wealthy.

There's this constant push to subscription...your software, your music, your movies.

    • @Nerobyrne

software, music and movies were always single license products.
Never in the history of these media, outside of open source, could you just take the product you bought, modify it and re-sell it like you can with laptops, cars etc.
You do not buy a song. You do not buy a movie. You do not buy a video game.
What you buy is a usage license which may or may not be transferrable.

    • @Nerobyrne
      @Nerobyrne 6 лет назад

      +Muh Russia salad
No. You can't just add a remixed intro to Ghostbusters and sell it, that's a crime. What you are allowed to do is make parodies, but if you want to sell those you have to heavily modify the original so that it is clear that it is your own product.
With video games, you aren't even allowed to extract parts of the code and sell those. You do not buy software or movies or songs. Period.

    • @JonnyInfinite
      @JonnyInfinite 6 лет назад +5

Nerobyrne you're getting confused with ownership and intellectual property. If you buy a song, you can edit or remix it as much as you like. But if you want to sell that remix then you'll get in trouble. In the same way, if I bought a bunch of laptops, swapped out a bunch of components for shitty parts then tried to sell them as nearly new laptops made by Dell or whatever, then that would be an issue. You're comparing Apples and Oranges, but when you buy song, as long as there is no DRM, you do own that song. When you buy a CD, you can resell it. In theory, you can buy a track from iTunes, strip the ID from it using software and resell it, if anyone would buy it from you. You can sell your used DVDs...yes there are some grey areas but to say you don't own stuff is a strawman to justify the subscription model.

    • @Nerobyrne
      @Nerobyrne 6 лет назад +1

      +JonnyInfinite
It's true you can resell your CDs, that's perfectly legal.
But unless I am very wrong, you technically lose the right to listen to those songs when you sell the CD.
Of course, nobody ever bothers to enforce this because it's a mere technicality.
I was specifically talking about software, if you own software, you automatically own the rights to sell it.
That's why you don't actually buy software, you buy a license to use it. I do agree though, the distinction gets much less clear if you buy a physical copy, especially if it is a physical copy of a movie or song. I just want people to remember that buying a laptop is very different than buying a video game, for a lot of reasons.

Louis, you are 100% correct in your analysis. Apple is, once again, over reaching. In a sane world, it would be Apple that would be facing both fines from regulators for anti-competitive behavior and civil damages from its customers. As it is, Apple is immune from the consequences of its actions due to the bizzaro-world nature of the US legal and political systems when it comes to Intellectual Property. Like most of the really important issues we face today, it may require a US constitutional amendment to fix this (we're probably too far gone now for a mere change in federal or state legislation, the judiciary would just nullify anything Congress or state legislatures pass). The original US Copyright Act of 1790 only provided for a term of 14 years, with a one time renewal of 14 additional years if the copyright owner was still alive. That's a total of 28 years, compared to the _120 years_ provided by current US law for copyrights held by corporations. The whole point of copyright, at least in US law, was to provide a way to enrich the public domain by providing creators a fixed period during which they could benefit from the fruits of their labor before their works became part of the commons -- it was _not_ to gift a small elite of a perpetual monopoly over intellectual property.

If apple employs all those tricks for "security" (for example no touch on replaced screens), why do other manufacturers do not employ those tricks? Why doesn't Lenovo make their laptops unbootable, if the screen is replaced, why doesn't Samsung make their touchscreens not work, if you replace the camera?

I hardly ever take notice of youtube comments but once in a while you get a someone such as kryptoniteee that can really wind people up. It's like someone else said, we don't know what skillset a person has from just one comment. I started from nothing and worked my way up to the point i'm at now where i repair a wide range of computer equipment, laptops, tablets and phones down to board level. That's about 10 years ago still going strong, and it's proof that anyone can do well in this business if the customer base is there and you're dedicated (especially to learning). There is one thing i would say though, give it another few years once all these apple users are using newer laptops and we will see major problems with trying to repair this stuff. That's one reason i branched out and didn't stick to one thing such as apple equipment. Don't get me wrong though, if you can make a ton of cash from one nich market then it's obviously the best thing to do, but will it last? I doubt it. Rossmann is a clever guy though and i'm sure if Apple repairs go tits up he will have plenty of other things he can jump into to keep his business rolling. Good luck to Steven if he want's to start a business, we should be applauding people that want to actually do something with their life rather than sitting on their ass.

When the alternatives (Windows PCs, Android phones) are worse in ways that I care about, I have no choice (and products like the Surface are equally, if not more impossible to repair, so Apple is not the only ones committing these types of sins). That said, I'm confident that I can use the products I own now for at least a few more years. We need right to repair legislation in the technology industry badly, just like we have in the automotive industry.

    Louis,
Love your channel and more importantly what you do. I'm a computer technician that works for a depot and in the Apple area. They are very secretive, to the point that all areas where Apple techs work is fenced in with covers over the fencing. I have been trained on two of the new Macbook Pro systems. We of course do not call them that. With the new system they have removed some items from the MLB but they have included a touch-sensor. The SSD drive is embedded in the new MLB along with the GPU as well as CPU.
To make a long story as short as possible. All parts that we use are refurbished, maybe not at first but they will be very quickly. If anything is wrong with an internal component including the SSD now, we have to change the MLB. Every MLB is tied to the touch sensor, so a new touch-sensor has to go in as well. Old MLB and touch-sensor that is pulled has to go back to manufacturer to be reset. This means that if I place in a new refurbished MLB and touch-sensor and it is DOA They will have to go back as well. I'll be so glad to see you finally rebuild one of the new models. I want to see your experience in lining up that touch-sensor.
To be honest, I'm quite curious as to how the mouse will be able to trick the cat this time around. Now if you are able to remove and replace chips on an MLB I don't see an issue, but getting around that touch-sensor may be a little tricky, so if you have an OS issue and need to remove the internal component there..... Like I said, I'm looking forward to future updates about the new systems.
Imagine standing the machine on its side with display open. Then using a little plastic alignment tool that only covers three sides of the button with one hand while placing in 6 screws with the other hand. I've only done it twice but each time took me about 20 minutes to get that touch sensor in and aligned properly. CRAZY!!!
BTW- I have never owned an Apple product in my life. When I was hired they asked me if I would have a problem working on apple machines. My response was apples and oranges it's got everything a PC has it just runs a UNIX OS. I run both Windows and Linux. Windows because of the amount of software available and Linux because I love it.

Machines must have genuine parts (Serialized to the machine) to even run, so if a part breaks in the middle of a harvest you have to wait for parts to be shipped and installed before you can continue. This can take weeks and you may even need to load the machine on a truck and take it to the dealer. The diagnostic programs are held by the dealer ensuring the owners cannot fix any issues themselves.

It's ridiculous that the words right to repair should be part of the same phrase. Why do we have to fight for this when it is a right we've held with the tech we've own since the 80s. Hmm, what I really wonder about now though is: does this put you into some legal trouble with your previous customers whose laptops you fixed for don't work properly anymore? To be honest here, no matter how you stand on this issue either pro-self repair or not, Apple called the shot way after the fact and it should be on them to provide people with a working screen again, meaning, get rid of that lockout at least on existing laptops.
If they want to call that shot on future models and everyone knows what they are buying into it's still mighty shitty and it shouldn't be legal for them to lock you out of your machine over a display swap under ANY circumstance, but this is just a much higher quality of a problem.
For what it's worth they might as well disable my iMac's Samsung SSD that I put in myself long after the warranty was up to give this baby a little more life and it wasn't like I had an official option anyways anymore if I remember correctly. Either way, it's BS like this that will - hopefully - bite them in the ass in the long term.
The most glaring problem is of cause that everyone is so extremely scared of Apple and not getting access to their presentations and sample devices for those early reviews ($$$$$) anymore that they completely succumb to Apple's PR apparatus.
As far as mainstream media goes, they go completely unchecked and even the new iPhone prices have only gotten "surprised" commentary, never have I read substantial critique.
I do see some direct critique from time to time especially about their tax deals with Ireland here in Europe, but that's pretty much it.

the biggest "right to repair" cases going down are against John Deere preventing farmers from repairing their own equipment... which Apple is super curious about. people just don't understand how jacked up these companies are trying to make everything. Computers are one thing, but preventing a farmer from repairing a tractor is just terrible. this isn't about this issue, it's about money in politics. People worried about healthcare, people worried about right to repair, people worried about copyright laws, people worried about just about everything... need to realise that all the problems are because of money in politics. Nothing will change unless sponsored politicians are cut off. Outside of this, you're awesome, keep that shit up.

I never personally own an apple product. My sister has owned multiple imacs and Mac book pros. My little brother has owned multiple iPhones. The sister says her computer are great for what she does (graphic designer and art director). My brother just says iPhones are cool.
They both tried to make me see the benefits of owning an apple product. I've dabbled a little with my sister's computer (still do when I have to) and my brother still thinks I'm missing out on iPhones.
Perhaps, back in the days before jobs died, apple as a line of products and as a company, was okay. I never bought anything from them because of their insane prices but I thought, back in the day, that apple products were decent.
Now, as a company, apple is greedy and criminal. Their products are laughable, repair, prices and specs wise. Their products might look cool on the outside but they are garbage inside. Their latest iPhone xs and xs max debacles just made me pity those who bought them.

I bought a "second hand" Honda Accord Limited 2004 V6. I got a very good price, because it It had been wrecked in a big accident and was completely "rebuilt" (by very talented technicians btw). Even though my insurance company wrote "Rebuilt" on my papers, Honda made no fuss about it and still accept to service my car ! They even replaced the front wings and hood that were copies, with original ones (after a truck ran into my parked car), and it didn't cost much more that what a 3rd party garage wanted to charge me (with more doubtful parts then what Honda could come up with, thus given the slight difference it wasn't worth the risk). The repair industry is a huge marketplace, and it looks like Apple is trying to monopolize that market in regards to their products (if not for obliging people to buy new stuff rather than allowing them to repair their Apple gizmo). In short : Apple is going for a total horizontal control (as they tried to do with music via iTunes), more over by trying to impose a ridiculously exaggerated pricing scale (fascism). They must be stopped at some point.

They neglected to mention the fact that very same home button also contains the fingerprint reader for touch ID. There are very legitimate reasons to have the OS lock down if it detects someone messing with a bio-metric security interface. As a user of these bio-metric devices I support the OS locking down down when a major change is detected, even if it means I do have to have certain things repaired directly by the manufacturer. We need to find the balance between protecting our privacy and our right to repair. This is just a little thing that bothered me about the story...I love the work you are doing for all of us! Some other industries have actually already gone much farther along this road. Ask a farmer how on his new John Deere tractor he has to buy a license from the manufacturer if he wants to hook up the used plow that he purchased from his neighbor. And how he doesn't get any new attachment licenses if there have been any unauthorized repairs on the tractor. Or ask a CNC shop how they have to ask (and pay) the manufacturer for permission before they are even allowed to move their machines (that they fully paid for!) to another location (there's a gyroscope built into the electronics that completely locks the machine as soon as it is moved even an inch).

I recently had a leaky faucet in my Apple Home. Apple asked me to return my home in it's original packaging for warranty consideration. When I explained that this wasn't possible, Apple offered to sell me a new home. Of course my home model was now obsolete, so for a nominal charge, I was offered an "upgraded" home.
The cost of bulldozing my "non-functioning" home was more than the initial cost. I had a RedSeal Journeyman Plumber replace it with a Home Depot ($2.49) faucet cartridge and promptly found all my doors and (dare I say it) windows locked.
When I looked into replacing my home with an Ubuntu or maybe a MicroSoft home, Apple's legal arm reminded me that my "land property agreement" was compatible only with having an Apple Home. As I took the matter to the local, then Provincial Courts, Apple began drilling for oil on my modest property.
Because I had "modified" my home, I violated the EULA. Apple therefore adopted all mineral rights and is currently making $millions/month and my home is currently the "rigger's dorm".
On the plus side... the faucet doesn't leak anymore.

Thanks Louise for standing strong by the consumer rights. If I am paying for a device, then I own it and I must have complete control over my device. Apple makes good products, but we should not let them dictate to us how we must use our device. Laws in EU are much pro consumer than the ones in US. In EU jurisdiction, people can even resell their software if they would like so. This is not by any means infringement of copyrights or intellectual property. This is simply transferring of ownership. We must know our rights and stand strong by it. At the end of the day, no law is above of the laws of a nation. Those license agreements must not be respected if they violate simple laws of private ownership. So I personally don’t give a damn with any of those bullshit that these corporate giants publish as license agreement. I respect their intellectual property, I pay for something, I own it, and once I do, I won’t let anyone violate my ownership rights over a product that I purchased with my hard earned cash. If I decide so, I can sell what I own in whole or parts that is an acceptable norm in countries where private ownership is respected. So, damn you Apple or anyone else who would ever want to try to violate simple thing like this by any bullshit politically correct measure like license agreements or IPs. Reduce your greed and APPRECIATE your customer who would come and do business with you!

I didnt even mention how the right to keep and bear arms is literally a right, protected by the constitution. The arguement over intellectual property is no where in the constitution, though i do think companies are exploiting the original reason for the intellectual property protection.

@@paintballjunkie65 I was more focusing on the laptop part, I don't see how laptop repairs pose a threat to anybody. I can't really comment on all you said because I don't know that much on the topic. I live in Sweden so I can't relate to school shootings and such, we've never had one. But I've heard it happens in the US. Anyways, the point was that guns *could* be dangerous, repairs cannot.

@@karl5874 I understand what you are saying that guns can be dangerous. I was just trying to say i would rather be free, than safe. That is what the founders of this country said. Because people in power will use their power to try and fear monger people into siding with them. Gun grabbing politicians do it, and companies do it. Apple has said that it only wants its people working on their products because other people might not do it correctly, damaging something, or Apple has also said that unauthorized technicians could inadvertently damage a battery that was not made to be removed, causing it to blow up. See how apple turned intellectual property into safety thing? Thats all i was trying to compare. I understand people in different countries might not understand this, but again, i would rather have more freedoms and less safety.

@@paintballjunkie65 I like what you said in the beginning there, to be free rather than safe. I love the concept of that and it's one of the beauties of the US. I guess there is a limit at *some* point, but I like it in general. Especially when it comes to freedom of speech and expression. Our neighbor Denmark recently passed a law that makes it illegal to wear certain clothing in public, such as a Burqa. I mean everybody is free to dislike a religion or a piece of clothing as much as they like, that's great. But to make it illegal to wear a certain piece of clothing? What the hell man, where is that going to end? Hope that doesn't spread to my country... (Now I'm the one going on a tangent but I liked the conversation)

Car manufacturers will love this if Apple wins. Good luck with your cleanup.
