This music video is a direct homage to "Carnival of Souls", a 1962 low budget horror film that now has a cult status. The scene they're emulating is where the protagonist visits an abandoned amusement building called "The Saltair Palace" right outside of Salt Lake City, UT.
Lyrics so personal yet universal. The pathos of alienation, misunderstoodness, trying to connect, compels the visitor to run away because who wants to be that? Even those so alienated. Too many goddamn concrete walls.

This song reminds me of Paro and Devdas' love story. "I went with you up to the place you grew up in" is probably referring to her visiting his childhood traumas with him. She did have a saviour complex and probably felt that she could save him but she also had self-respect and knew when and how to exert boundaries when he disrespected her. That's why I love her so much. Paro was a kind woman and she loved him but she loved and respected herself too. Except when at the end, she finds out that this is the last time she would get to see him and we see her at the weakest, most vulnerable. The way she yells "Devaaa" so chilling. Oh the thought of what could be is always so saddening. Wish he could have a moment of redemption but Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay is relentless in not giving him even a moment of respite in his downfall. Devdas' hamartia is his indecisiveness, his need to always escape.

I have listened to this song a million times simply from binging this album. But tonight it brought me to my knees in tears. Her music is so incredibly touching and heart wrenching. I appreciate this moment that I've had to experience it in such a different way than before.

music that makes me feel this way is rare. and I try my best to listen sparingly so that I don't get too used to it. I hope that when I come back here when I need to, it'll make me feel that initial way each time. but that's usually not possible since we tend to get used to every note over time and that feeling fades play by play... but I still hope.
