I put all my vintage cards away and look at them 4-5 times a week. I always gotta look at what I've built over the last few years. It just feels good to look at my 59 set of my 70s set or just some lose cards from 51. It's a good feeling to be surrounded by so many valuable cards and hall of famers in my room 😊
Raw cards are the all time best. I don’t mind graded cards but there’s something about that raw card that takes me back to that exact time of opening a pack of cards and getting the card of your favorite players. 1972 is my all time favorite.
I love feeling a card from this era, though I understand having a gem mint example encapsulated because any time you handle it, you could potentially drop hundreds or thousands of dollars from its value.
Great work Chris. Good memories watching Baseball Tonight highlights with Berman back then. One of my favorite Bermanisms is Eddie "Eat Drink and Be" Murray 😂
I have all of these cards and they're all in excellent condition except for the 1973 Babe ruth with Willie Mays and Aaron. If i got them graded they would grade 5 and up. My 1971 Hank Aaron is near mint. I bought 2 of them for a really good price. It looks like a 7 or 8 just eyeballing it but i know how tough PSA are on thier grading. Nice video ❤
You promised tidbits at the end, but then gave us that tidbit about Brooks Robinson's triple plays less than halfway through the video. Your generosity simply cannot be restricted by timecode.
Love the video! I am sure the reason that Topps used the same photo's was that in those days color photography was expensive. A lot of people in that era didn't even have color tv sets yet!! Thus old motel signs would actually list that they offered color tv's in the rooms...
I have 9 of the 20. Like a lot of kids I passed them around, traded them etc...we never would have thought to put them away safe and sound and untouched. I always wonder what the stories to these cards are. How are they in such condition at a time when protective sleeves didn't even exist. Great video!
These categories of videos are always a pleasure to watch. I'm a long time advocate of Garvey for the HOF. Compare him to Harold Baines: Garvey won an MVP and had 5 finishes in the top 6 in voting. Baines had none. Garvey one of the best fielding 1B of the era, while Baines didn't even play the field most of his career.
Garvey was a good player, but not Hall of Fame Worthy. His WAR is only 38, and he ranks 51 in JAWS, below George Scott. Keith Henandez is the most worthy of all the overlooked first-basemen.
Great job, as always Chris. Although Mays had his last regular issue card in 1973, he did appear in the 1974 Topps set, in one of the World Series cards.
I always liked that you could see the Topps cameraman's leg in the photo on Dick Allen's 1971 card, as the photog was obviously lying on his back to get the shot. Since you did this video, Allen is now a Hall of Famer.
I have the 1971 OPC version of the Rich Allen at home some place. I got it in a trade in the early 90's. Had no idea what it was but thought it was cool and old lol. Most likely only grade a 3 or 4. Another fun list Chris
Same. Greatest home run hitter was Ruth with best AB/HR by a non cheat. Career king is Aaron and single season is Judge. If you cheat, and I mean as an individual you decide to cheat, your numbers are by definition fraudulent.
Another classic episode idea--best rookie cards of Chris Berman's middle name victims. I'd like to suggest Moisses 'Skip to my' Alou and Albert 'Winnie the' Pujols...
That '71 Dusty / Don is a pain. I had a really nice one so graded it; got a SGC 7.5. Decided I didn't need one that nice, and sold it. I'll be darned if I didn't pay nearly as much to replace it with a PSA 5 a few months later. I should have just kept the one I got graded for my set...
If you think about it, you may, as I did, be surprised that Carlton Fisk did not make the list. His rookie card is from 72 if memory serves correctly?!
Total guess on the 3 pitchers after Seaver. Except Ryan, obviously Nolan is on the list. I'm guessing Jim Palmer and... Well, I was gonna guess the Goose Gossage rookie (73 I believe) but by the time I typed Palmer, you said Gibson.
12 of those players are still alive and 8 have passed. (Ignoring the 3rd player on the Baylor/Baker rookie and ignoring the ‘Ruth’ card completely). Looking at the ages of the remaining 12 it’s kind of depressing to think what’s to come over the next ten years. Of _all_ the 16 players cards from 1971 there are only 12 PSA 10s in existence. Aaron has 4, Garvey 2, and one each for Byleven, Rose, Seaver, Simmons, Banks, and Clemente. If we were to add in the Ryan and Carew cards from ‘71 it wouldn’t matter, they have no PSA 10s either. Condition sensitive indeed.
I actually thought Bert Blyleven was going to be higher on the list. Even if he's, ''just a pitcher,'' the rookie card is still in the 1971 Topps set, and it's not so easy finding one in high grade compared to some of the other years.
Thurman Munson 1971 Topps in, a PSA 8 would set you back about 5 thousand or so. But, a 9 could be upwards of 200,000 dollars!? Wow...I kind of get it, it's an iconic card, but still....geesh. Although some Zion Williamson cards still being bought for 4 and even 5 figures, the hobby doesn't make much sense. Lol
Munson is the most distasteful exclusion from the HoF. He literally isn't in the hall because he died. He doesn't have "good enough numbers" because he only played 11 seasons. But there's a ten year minimum career length for entry. So why are players held to a numbers standard it takes 15-18 years to attain? He was his leagues best overall catcher for about a decade, only Bench ahead of him in MLB for the 70s. Great leader, multiple championships where he was a pivotal piece. Great performer in the post season with a career .357 playoff average, .373 in 16 WS games with a .900+ OPS. Career reg season avg of .292, won ROY and an MVP, had 2 other top 7 finishes and 7 of his 11 seasons he was top 26.
Well said. Hopefully, Ted Simmons' HOF induction will help give Munson's candidacy, some new life. Thurman should have been voted in years ago. While he might not have the longevity as some of the others what he did accomplish in the time he had, was quite impressive.
I was shocked the Schmidt rookie wasn’t No. 1. It’s a high-number rookie card of an inner-circle Hall of Famer. The power of the black-bordered beauties kinda skewed things.
I've come around on Garvey - didn't used to like him - but he should be in the Hall. He checks all the boxes. Always seems to miss by a couple of votes. I think he'll get there eventually.
Of the non-HoF, dusty baker will go in the day he retires, dick Allen will go in on the next vet committee ballot, and Munson and Garvey are getting more support with time. That will leave only poor Pete on the outside looking in.
your videos are articulate, to the point, and easy to listen to.
The best, most unbiased, most realistic voice in the hobby. Love this guy
Always good to see Schmidt on these lists.
Yeah Mike Schmidt 1972-1989
Great video,
I’m watching it as I sort my 1960’s and 70’s cards!!
Not much better than listening to a Chris video on my way to a local show. Although I may change my strategy of buying today after this one. Thanks
Great video, now I have to go back and dig these cards out of the cigar box and look them up.
I remember getting many of these back in the 70s. I still have many tucked away in my collection boxes. Need to look at them again.

A little wear adds some character to a card.
Love Brooks! Being near Baltimore, have met him several times, great guy!
Great post. This is my era plus 1975...had every single card from all those years
Great work Chris. Good memories watching Baseball Tonight highlights with Berman back then. One of my favorite Bermanisms is Eddie "Eat Drink and Be" Murray 😂
Thanks for all the info Chris. I love your content. The quiz at the end was a great addition as well. Keep up the outstanding work.
The heyday of my card collecting as a kid... have all the cards on the list but in raw/mid-grade...
You keep bringing me back to life Chris. Lol! Thanks for the cpr:)

True! Good catch

I enjoy the raw values you provide. Have you considered doing a segment on raw card value?
I would like to although raw card values are a lot trickier because it depends on condition and many websites don’t track raw sales
I have the 1971 OPC version of the Rich Allen at home some place. I got it in a trade in the early 90's. Had no idea what it was but thought it was cool and old lol. Most likely only grade a 3 or 4. Another fun list Chris
Why did my childhood collecting days had to be in the 90s(junk wax era). If only my collecting days as a kid was in the 70s........smh 😢😢🤦♂🤦♂
Tidbits aka Fun Facts are great. Keep them coming.
I will always say that Hank is the home run king until a non juiced players tops him.
Same.
Greatest home run hitter was Ruth with best AB/HR by a non cheat.

If you cheat, and I mean as an individual you decide to cheat, your numbers are by definition fraudulent.
I agree.
Awesome cards, awesome tidbits.
I like Tidbits. They’re kinda like Cheez-Its, only in a different shape.
Another classic episode idea--best rookie cards of Chris Berman's middle name victims. I'd like to suggest Moisses 'Skip to my' Alou and Albert 'Winnie the' Pujols...
That was fun n players I grew up watching.
Wow I guess 1971 was the year to collect! Unfortunately I didn't start collecting until 1972 when I was 9...
great list. love the 70s. Surprised the schmidt rookie wasnt number 1. Can you do 1965-1969?
That is coming soon!
I just bought a Jim Palmer rookie from 1965 Topps. Wonder if it makes the list. 60's is loaded with so many hall of fame rookie cards.
71 Garvey and 72 Carew my two favorties. Garvey should be in HOF--more 200 hit seasons than Gwynn, four straight Gold Gloves, MVP in 1974.
That was a excellent share.
My childhood heyday! Thank you
‘71 is an amazing set. Curious, what is the highest ranked on psa and what is the highest ranked sold ever of a ‘71?
Great questions… that might be a future video
"Be home" was the number one baseball nickname given by Chris Berman. Yes. There is a list.
I still to this day think of Blyleven as Bert "Be Home". A top 5 Berman nickname for sure.
Great video! Winfield.
Have a lot of these cards. Question, what's the best way to sell?
That '71 Dusty / Don is a pain. I had a really nice one so graded it; got a SGC 7.5. Decided I didn't need one that nice, and sold it. I'll be darned if I didn't pay nearly as much to replace it with a PSA 5 a few months later. I should have just kept the one I got graded for my set...

Well, at least I got Ryan right.
I’m new to this….if someone has some of these cards, how would they know how good their cards are and how would they get top dollar?
I wish tops would go back to doing the reprints test that they did have the early 50s and do that on the 70s card
I always liked the 72 Topps cards
12 of those players are still alive and 8 have passed. (Ignoring the 3rd player on the Baylor/Baker rookie and ignoring the ‘Ruth’ card completely). Looking at the ages of the remaining 12 it’s kind of depressing to think what’s to come over the next ten years.

Wow! Great bit of research there!
I believe Willie Mays appeared on a world series card in the 1974 set
good cards
There is no better way to end the day 🍿
Count me in for the tids and the bits, lol

Does a printing shadow on a Nolan Ryan rookie card diminish or enhance the card’s value
That would hurt the card's value
"There's more to me than you'll ever know... And I got more hits than Sadaharu Oh"
Hey Chris, what kind of loupe would you suggest I purchase for looking at cards? Thanks in advance.
I've actually never used a loupe but I imagine any of the major brands are fine
@collectorinvestordealer OK thanks....I was using a magnifying glass under a light and that seemed to work well too.
Thurman Munson 1971 Topps in, a PSA 8 would set you back about 5 thousand or so. But, a 9 could be upwards of 200,000 dollars!? Wow...I kind of get it, it's an iconic card, but still....geesh. We have a winner!

Weird to see so few rookies
Pete Rose,Don Balor, Dusty Baker, Steve Garvey, Dick Allen part one. No Dave Winfield or Goose Gosage.
Who doesn't love tidbits?
Nice list. How many do you own? In a 7 or better.. get back to us.
The only one I own in a 7 or higher is the Schmidt. I have an 8.
I love tidbits

No idea.... who??

I would not have gotten that
I was shocked the Schmidt rookie wasn’t No. 1. It’s a high-number rookie card of an inner-circle Hall of Famer. The power of the black-bordered beauties kinda skewed things.
I have never understood why is Steve Garvey isn't in the HOF. He has the hardware, 2500+ Hits. WAR? Cal is the #1 Shortstop all-time but I'm partial.
I've come around on Garvey - didn't used to like him - but he should be in the Hall. He checks all the boxes. Always seems to miss by a couple of votes. I think he'll get there eventually.

What? No 73 Sideburns Yaz?
