- Hi guys, welcome to a film by Antiques Arena! In this captivating film, you'll learn *how to identify real amber**, ensuring that your precious finds are **authentic**. **Amber authenticity tests* can be tricky, but we'll guide you through the *real vs. fake amber* conundrum with ease. You'll discover how to use *UV light testing* to see if your amber glows the correct *fluorescence colors* and perform the reliable *saltwater test* to check its **buoyancy**.
We’ll dive into the *hot pin test for amber**, which releases that distinct **piney smell**, a key indicator of **real amber**. Plus, we’ll explore the **static electricity test**, showing how **electrostatic properties* can attract small particles, unlike *fake amber**. Visual cues are crucial; learn to spot the **visual signs of fake amber* and identify authentic *amber inclusions* that include bits of *plant matter* or air bubbles.
You'll get hands-on with the *acetone test* to see how real amber remains unaffected while *plastic or resin* imitations become sticky. We'll also differentiate *copal vs. amber**, providing tips on distinguishing these look-alikes through **specific gravity tests* and *hardness tests**. Ever wondered about the **smell test**? Real amber emits a pleasant scent when warmed, unlike **synthetic amber* which smells of chemicals.
We cover everything from the *scratch test* on the Mohs scale to using a *UV light test* to reveal amber's unique **fluorescence colors**. Our guide ensures you understand the **differences between real and fake amber**, making you a savvy collector.
You’ll also learn about the electrostatic charge of amber, visual cues, and the *electrostatic properties* that set real amber apart from its imitations. By the end of this film, you'll have the knowledge to confidently test amber at home using **household items**.

I just bought a beautiful silver and amber bracelet at the thrift store. I wasn't sure if it was real until it passed every one of these tests I was willing to subject it too. Jewelers loop, black light and static. I'm not willing to go so far as anything that will damage it. I will wear it, enjoy it and treasure my special find.
Did hair test. My real amber tested positive. My thrift store find tested positive. Thank you so much. Love your channel demonstrations learned a lot.
Thank you for your comment and well done on your thrift store find.
I inherited my grannies bead necklace and never knew if it was Amber. It passed the friction test with flying colours so as she was born in 1887, I'm assuming it was bought over 100 yrs ago so likely to be Amber. I'd love it just the same if it weren't, but good to know so my daughter can inherit and enjoy too one day!
Great video.
Some loops have a. Uv light.
Just need to protect your eyes when using the light.
Hi Hun, Thank you very much, tbh i prob should have put that in but didnt think.
Copal is a tree resin though. So if something is not amber it could be Copal
Very informative. Thanks a million for taking the time.
Best video to test amber I’ve seen so far
Thank you very much
Thank you very helpful pass the water test
You've covered it all Walter. Every tip on identifying Amber, that I know. Great video fella.
Thank you very much Joe
What a brilliant video! I had never heard of the salt water test before. Thankyou for giving us such useful information.
Thank you so much for this video. it was very helpful! I did all the test except for the salt water and amber as a beautiful smell test.
You can't tell with ut the UV light, every other test will show the same results with COPAL, and COPAL looks identical to Amber
Does butterscotch amber conduct electricity to?
Do the same test apply to butter scotch amber
Great, step by step educational segment! Thank you
Hi Ilona, Thank you very much x
Great video, Walter. Very helpful information. Thank you!
Thank you very much
Thank you so much! I think you just made me a lot of $$$ . I have a 23 nugget amber necklace that has insects and flora in every piece!!.
Glad I could help!
I could cry, I had a beautiful 8 to 10 mm Amber chip necklace that I gave to my daughter. I looked at all of the chips with a loop, and one chip had a tiny bug. I'm devastated that it wasn't real ♥
That sucks
@@weaponfriends356 Actually I had it tested, and it's real 😀
Hello, thank you for this information. But you just compared amber to plastic. Won't copal behave the same in salt water or static electricity test?
That jewelry is gorgeous!
Those photos are fantastic
Thank you very much Katharine
hadn't heard of the uv test before I remember broach a stunning piece
Thanks mate it is lush
Fake amber of better quality is usually made with resin, perhaps pine, but I know peach tree gives a very impressive amber look alike. Of course those resins were young as compared to real amber which was aged for many many years.
Can use pink salt
My pendent passed the static test! 😁. That's wild!
Thank you so much. I did the tests you demonstrated and mine is real!
Thank you very much for your comment. Glad it helped
What a great video, so helpful. Good job. Just starting out in the jewelry hobby business and this will help
Thank you very much for your comment and support
Beautiful knowledge thanks brother God bless thanks.
I have recently bought 3 peices at auction, I paid £22 for all 3,under a magnifying glass they have insect in and bits of plant, bubbles and seeds I think,I have done all of your tests and the peices have passed ,I am glad they are all real
The insect is a couple of mm long
1) Plastic density starts from 0.94. So some plastics will float even in fresh water.
2) And guess why gas canisters made of metal? Because some plastics can hold static charges. And sparkles can ignite gasoline.
Thank you for your comment
Actually there is another problem besides fake amber. It's artificial aging. Newly extracted amber exposed long term heat. So it changes color to look more vintage.
@@jacky_joo_jewelry thank you very much for that. I may make an updated video that is valuable info thank you
Wow I like the salt water test and the friction test! Very cool! I need to get me a portable black light and a jewelry loop! I didn't know amber was yellow yolk color! Thank you so much Edward. XXO
Hi Love, Thank you for your support as always, amber comes in loads of colours but tests work on them all lol take care xx

What about copal? I have some beautiful pieces of supposed amber but I’m not sure if it’s an actual amber or copal. It passed the salt water test and it picked up pieces of paper (static) and it does smell wonderful when rubbed on anything but I am questioning if it’s copal or amber... as copal also floats in salt water .. any thoughts on this?
thank you
And what.does the video have with ANitique amber?
"Amber isn't tree sap, it's plant resin".
Trees _are_ plants, and no plant produces resin to the degree that trees do. Amber *definitely* comes from trees; mostly from the taxonomic order _pinales._
Thank you very much for the info appreciate it
Thanks Walter - very useful ;)
Thank you very much WillGTee
What are they worth?
Thank you so much,
Thanks man!
Thanks!
Hot needle to amber will also emit a little puff of white (not black) smoke
What if it doesn’t pass one test? The static test in particular it’s a small pair of earrings
Hi thank you for your comment. There is always a chance that real amber could fail a test like static as there are lots of factors to take in to account. However. There is also a chance it is not amber and another stimulant such as shaterline What test did it pass
But if already on the ring how to check please guide
How does pressed amber hold up under your tests?
Great info, thx for the tips.
Hi, iv got two beautiful buddhas but theyr really large and I would like to find out if its Amber, I would like to send you a photo of them and you could tell me a little bit about them ok?, thanku, karen.
Supposedly they are finding many millions of years old Amber with creatures in it from Burma. (Myanmar)
Will water ruin Amber ?
Great!
Tree sap is plant resin, is it not?..a tree is a plant, sap is a resin.
Please we want a translation into Arabic
thank you for your message, i am sure there is an option for subtitles in your youtube settings
