  • Is California’s new $20 minimum wage for fast food workers causing restaurants to close?
It’s been two months since the increase went into effect for large fast food chains, and one just announced it’s closing four dozen of its locations throughout the state.
Stacked chairs, empty tables and a sign hanging on the door saying ‘This location has closed’ greet anyone approaching Rubio’s Coastal Grill in El Dorado Hills.

Then no worker will get paid at all while the wealthy who can afford the workers as they already are privielged to do so will make more money while not having to not only give workers but the wealth gap between the rich and poor will widen along that it’ll further cause the divide of the privileged vs who isn’t ;what you’re suggesting creates another problem rather than “problem solved”. Also, Andrew Yang had mentioned automation would be a problem for the same reasons I had mentioned. Also, what job do you do? It’ll probably be replaced by automation. And if that is the case, then you’ll start claiming it shouldn’t happen as you are for it. problem not solved.

What this is doing is closing down daycares. Daycare employees have to get licensed from the state, background checks, etc. And now fastfood workers are making more. So to keep your daycare employees you got to raise wages. Guess what? over 90% of parents can't pay for daycare and have to get federal help called CCMS. It cost about $15,000 a year for one child to be in daycare so mom can work. Daycares in Texas are shutting down, and people quitting jobs to stay home with children. TX Daycare employees made about $12hr. Then the new daycares that open to replace the ones that closed have higher rent, and less staff, and children, so they won't make it.

@@connordoyle502 No I am not. I'm compairing Texas fast food wages. They make $14hr starting at Taco Bell and $60-$75k as a McDonalds manger in Texas. Since California increased wages Texas did too, because some of our restaurants are owmed by California franchises, and our appartments are owned by California corporations too. So this is how Californians spread their wage increase across the nation. If El Coyote based out of California pays people $18hr in Tyler Texas then other restaurants have to raise wages to keep employees from leaving. See how that works?

Rubio's went bankrupt in 2020 - at least 3 years before the increase in the minimum wage. Thank you for clarifying in the point WELL INTO YOUR STORY after you attempted to tie the recent store closings to the minimum wage increase. In and Out was already paying its employees more than $20 per hour before the wage hike. Why do you not acknowledge that Rubio's high debt load lead to closing stores and another bankruptcy? Bad reporting.

I disagree I think a fast food worker can make it a career, stay with company or mive on. When I was younger yes the fast food workers, were probably at their first job. But as we know times have changed, everything is so much more 3xpensive, for a young person starting out it can be very difficult. Bob

As a society, we should agree that fast food is not really food, so there is no loss if they all close. Any business that can't pay a living wage should not exist. Period.
Automation should be implemented anywhere possible. AI is going to take a lot of jobs and create some new ones. Work hours should be cut for everyone, creating more jobs, but at a living wage. The people who support capitalism are watching it crumble before their eyes, while they try to put bandaids on unsustainable business models. Everything changes - all throughout history.

No it doesnt. Many places, including fast food restaurants are looking to lower their prices because their price gouging drove away too many customers.

@TurdFergusen capitalism did not bring everything. Most things, like technological or medical advancements, were brought to you by government funded or subsidized research. Capitalism made it with ever cheaper materials, high price tags and tries to find a way to have you pay monthly for it, or cover it in advertisements. Capitalism doesnt make things better.
