Fiddlers have played for dancing in Québec since the time of New France, though it’s likely that all of the tunes played in the province today date from after the British conquest of 1760. Some tunes and dances probably arrived with the British military presence, others with Irish and Scottish settlers in the 19th century, and many as a result of the continual back-and-forth between Québec and the United States, particularly New England. Fiddling in Québec was an entirely aural tradition until the 20th century, and the first substantial documentation of the repertoire was not in printed collections or manuscripts-as was the case in Scotland, for instance-but on hundreds of 78 rpm discs recorded and released in Montreal in the 1920s.
Fiddlers in Québec often put their own stamp on tunes and each has his or her own sound: some combination of bowings, ornamentation, timbre, and melodic and rhythmic variations on the melody. The three tunes on tonight’s program are all widely played in Québec nowadays and come from the repertoire of fiddler André Alain (1931-2000), from the village of St-Basile de Portneuf on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. All three tunes are “crooked,” meaning that their phrases are not the standard 4 or 8 bars in length. The melodic contour of the second tune is similar to that of a number of Scottish and Irish tunes. The third tune could be played “en vielle,” with the lower two strings of the violin tuned up from G and D to A and E.

This performance NEVER gets old!! I always come back to it every so many months or so because it's so good.
Still crooked!
I can't wait to come.back here and say that years later too! (Just found it).
I love Scottish fiddle music; it's in my blood and sooths my soul. I love baroque music, particularity as performed on baroque instruments as brought to us by Voices of Music. The performances Voices of Music have shared on RUclips have made this wonderful music easily accessible to me. Heartfelt thanks ❤. I think now is the time for me to support you in a practical way!!! Thanks so much xxx
Thank you!
تبتسم الروح حيناً و تذرف دمعة حيناً آخر لكنها تتمتلئ سعادة عند الاستماع الى الحان السماء.
Sometimes the spirit smiles, or sheds a tear, but in the end of day , it will be flooded with pure happiness when the ear listens to the melodies of Heavens.
Well said!
Salaam! Well said.
I love all your recordings of Baroque music, but these fiddle tunes you've done with Laura Risk are just SO GOOD. I started out on violin playing Irish and Scottish music so this genre holds a special place in my heart. These tunes sound so nice on the Baroque instruments!
Thank you!
I wondered how they'd sound on baroque instruments for years, and now I get a sample. I actually may someday consider getting a baroque setup just to play my fiddle music.
What a beautiful and vivid rendition of these so-called «reels» from irish-scottish-welsh tradition that were played at family and social parties by numerous and talented «violoneux» during my childhood (a long, long time ago before and just after the birth of TV !).
Congratulations and thanks from Québec!
You are very welcome!

Magnifique ! Seems like old irish tunes played by Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien in their CD « Road to Kilkeny ». I love folk music played on period instruments ❤️

😊.
Great performance as always on your channel. Okay, into some research. Asking if VoM or anyone else can tell me if any pre-modern violin family bows or instruments survived IN USE into the photographic era. Can you tell me if there are known photos of fiddlers (wouldn't they have older, or older-style gear than classical musicians) from maybe 1850 with a baroque bow or instrument? All I know of is a 1920s fiddler with a crudely made violin that has a flat tailpiece that has the tailgut going through the top, baroque style.
19th century fiddlers and cellists would have used instruments in the older setup, as we see in paintings. This is a great set of old photos: www.pinterest.com/martinswan/historic-photos/
Lovely! I have been playing that first tune for years but i cant find a good title for it to share sheet music. Does anyone know another title besides “reel d’andre alain?
Love from Quebec ✌️
Samesies
Hello VOM, I was wondering if its possible to do Yiruma's River Flows In You in an orchestra style. I hope you can do it also for famous music pieces.
Does anyone know where I can get a score for this piece?
Amazing! Québec's nice.
OMG AMAZEEING
Bien.
BAROQUE BLUEGRASS. WOW!
Amazing 😍
2:36 HUP!!!!!!!!
Where would I be able to find sheet music for this?
What are the names of these three tunes?
ruclips.net/video/v9FiIdTJVjU/видео.html
Is a score available for this?
Fiddle music is best learned by ear to match the correct style. In Quebec the names of tunes are pretty unimportant, but the first one is pretty commonly known as "Reel des Eskimaux". You can find the score on folktunefinder and other places with that name. I don't know if the other two have names beyond "Reel d'André Alain", which is not very descriptive.
💐
Why are the fingerboards so short?
old time violins
those slight glisses on the g string😍
Who else here likes chamber/baroque orchestras 100x more than symphonic orchestras. Baroque just sounds far more emotional, authentic if you ask me
Me too ✔ a whole lot more. And with a smaller ensemble, a conductor of the orchestra, as an extra role in addition to the composer and/or leader of the band, wasn't thought necessary and 'invented' until the 1820s.or thereabouts, The greater sound volume required from instruments in a symphony orchestra tended to dominate versus the quality of the sound. Certainly, I prefer baroque music in smaller and more intimate surroundings than a concert hall created for a massive symphonic orchestra or huge choral assembly 😊
You’re absolutely correct and of course I’m not hating on more modern orchestral setup, I’m just saying baroque has the rugged almost antique feel whereas the modern (late 1800s to present day) are almost too much with there being anywhere from 40 to 70 members. One of the other things baroque has that is special is hearing individual violins/violas and in a modern orchestra they play in unison and imo without the character that baroque has.
Lets swing that thing! Locker vom Hocker gefiddelt. Die Halle hallt ja ganz ordentlich. Ich steh auf scottish canadians.
Sgoinneil!
:)
Jolie musique écossaise mais au Qubec,on parle français si je ne m'abuse.
Almost sounds Scandinavian
What are the names of the tunes please?
It's in the description :)
I can see where the tunes are from, I can see the descriptions of the tunes, I can't see any names. What am I missing?!
