Creating Feeling with Frank Gehry

- It is impossible to miss the curving and sinuous structure located in Paris's 16th arrondissement, which has the bearing of a ship built of glass. This building is the Fondation Louis Vuitton; the museum and cultural centre designed by modern architecture's greatest transformer of shapes, Frank Gehry-the Pritzker prize-winning designer whose buildings have earned him the status of a household name. In this heartfelt portrait of both the architect and the building he has created, filmmaker Emile Rafael lets the man and one of his most unique structures speak for themselves. Mounted by arching glass sails, the building-whose initial concept was that of a fish-is depicted from its smallest details to its shimmering external envelope. Seeming to sail on the lawns of the Bois de Boulogne, the Fondation is revealed as a building in motion, continually slipping and flowing like the creature on which it is based. It draws parallels with Gehry's other great monuments to culture; the Bilbao Museum, the Guggenheim, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall, where exciting shapes elevate the works of art they host and contain.
Speaking about his meditative portrait of the great shape-shifter of modern architecture, Rafael explains: "Gehry's presence and energy was enough to fill the entire building. We spoke at great length about his love for art in all its guises, including how architecture is often overlooked as an art form in itself. With the film, my job was to try and capture what we had spoken about visually-to film the building with the same poetry and sense of movement and expression that Gehry had described and so aspired to in designing it."

“... it gets blurred, because architecture, as well as being art is an act of social conscience, because you’re making buildings for all kind of people that give them shelter, make them feel loved and accepted.”
I’ll never look at the buildings the same way after hearing this.
He’s so inspiring and humble, can’t believe I’m living at the same time as this legend
Oh he's far from humble haha even he admits he's cocky and competitive as hell
I am an architecture student and I was so fascinate by him, I drew 400 sketches in my design semester ..
I love everything about this video: the man, the music, the architecture, the production. Every once in a while I have to come back and watch it again and again to be reminded of the beauty in this often ugly world.
'Making art is an act of love and making love to the world' ♥
I got goosebumps when I heard that. Rang so true to me.
Well....after making love .... 9 months later someone needs to change diapers, feed the baby and save money for college.
Nope...
His art is an act of crime and hate, I hope all his buildings get torn down
The architect who will be remembered in the same sense as Wright. And a wonderful man as well.
I want to have his feeling one day. To be able to build your idea and turn it to reality. Your building. Your landmarks. Your legacy.
I've always thought of Gehry as more an artist than a designer of buildings. His work has more to do with evoking thought than with practicality.
I'm just glad there are those who can affordable him, because his designs make day to day life all the more interesting.
People have forgotten to look outward, they seem to only look in and miss the feeling, emotion the true beauty of the world and what's in it.
Beautiful mind, beautiful heart, beautiful creations.
2:52 ”Making art is an act of love, and making love to the world.”
Always fasinated by the curves , how can it move us giving the feeling of love and warmth Frank Gehry is the best example of the same.. Love your design and your physiology of designing
This is a stunningly beautiful documentary. It is not often that architectural structures and spaces are captured so nicely.
so true...
Thank you for this wonderful video. Frank Gehry is a treasure.
Emile Rafael, your film is wonderful! Thank you!
Brilliant, phenomenal, and one of the Greatest architects.
The last minute and a half I started to tear :(
It's so beautiful and the validity to the argument becomes true since people are the blood life of Archtiecture
i cried too, is awsome to be this human, sensitive. stuff like this are pure love.
@@perlaguzman4065 I cried, too!

Absolutely stunning building!!! Reminds me of worn shipwrecked boats off a bleak coast line.
Greatman, great artist.!great architect.!
Amazing. My all time favourite ARCHITECT
Great wisdom in designs. In Chinese philosophy, in order to achieve equanimity of the mind, we need to balance the Ying and Yang, the solid and void, hot and cold, static and movement. Gehry designs that are so dynamics are to balance the statics of most of the buildings.
Great insight and inspirations for life and creating art with positive intentions. Thank you for sharing this great time capsule.
One of the true greats
one of my all time favorite architects and i am an artist... nice feature!
"if people are conscious enough to understand art, there wouldn't be need for art because it's everywhere"

@@germancamacho5352 I`m an architect but i know u're right, a good engineer would love a challenge
Beautiful and inspiring
what a legend
I freaking love Frank Gehry!
That's amazing, architecture is like the ultimate sculpture, this building is a great work of art.
What a masterpiece
Wow!!!
I respect Frank gehry
I think I saw him in Arthur when I was a child. Yet he changed pretty much alot.
He is a genius.
Amazing!
The Best
I was distracted and took my phone up down, then watched until the end without realizing it wasn’t another crazy Gehry way of filming his buildings
maravilhoso

Muito simpático
great video

We look back to Greek and Roman architecture because that is when it was perfected. Every single century since it was erected the world has come to see it there, to visit it there. There was no architecture 300,000 years ago to go back to and 2,000 years from now they will still be going to Rome to see it.I'm not sure sure they will be going to Bilbao 2000 years from now to see it. Frank, you can't talk like your work has stood the test of time when your still alive to talk about it. Let's wait 200 years or 2,000 years and see if your buildings are still drawing people like Rome and Greece are.
Current task: creating wonder in the banal, in a way that is relevant, not pastiche, and doesn’t seek praise that it is not deserving of.
It’s a challenge, I hope I can find answers that are close enough to right that I’ll be happy. It’s a difficult task because starchitects don’t often deal with banalities outside of residential (which they treat as pavilions).
although possibly if i spent more time around the building i would come to like it idk
this video is a fucking masterpiece, i had goose puns
What is that 2-3 second clip of the dancer at the beginning? I saw it in some gallery (can’t even remember where) a few years ago and been searching for it ever since.
ESL teacher takes me here..
I want to meet him
one day
What beautiful music is it?
architect : this, this and this, i want it like this
engineer : the length seems not right, the angle too
architect : how the hell i know, i'm an artist
engineer : f*ck
ahahahahah😂
Movement
When solids fall from the sky on spaces. He said I have a signature to prove. Shift the soilds right or left. He said to himself, but no stand and move. He ambitiously shouting hardly. Dance Dance Da... It's much more sophisticated. expressing the power of shifting heavy blocks. Huh..
Môha
i wonder what Gehry has to say about an artist like Richard Serra that adamantly says architecture can never be art.
How yoh inspired by frank gehry?
@@andreiansamarita7987 hes alright, did some very interesting buildings, too modernist for my blood tbh,
The music its too loud at the end was difficult to understand what he's was saying.
don't like the building but like the thinking behind it

This Will Destroy You - The Mighty Rio Grande
Thank you Mr Frank GERRY….😂….
Great interview but the music is very distracting
Please translate to indonesia.. 😊😊
Well, even though this is a very special building - where does the form come from and why? just because of a fish? Great architecture combines forms and functions. A great concept is the combination of both. Sounds more like "we have cash, so let's build something abstract." I guess there were a lot more thought processes going on in the background, but this documentary didn't touch on them. Every single detail and element on a building should have a purpose...its not supposed to be a gimmick.
interesting point...
Yea, it's a bit of a fancy video, yet doesn't say much.
This Will Destroy You
No
The only feeling this guy’s architecture creates is anxiety and depression
wrong music
His kind of narcissistic architecture is unfathomable in Japan and Korea
Narcissistic s***t
I’m sorry for the unpopular opinion. But take a piece of paper, crumble it,separate it by regions, add philosophical aspect - you are Frank Ghery
There revealed a huge sense of insecurity , try doing public housing within budget
I like his perspectives on art. But his buildings are horrendous, imo anyways
I couldn't agree more. I don't sense any movement or beauty in this building at all.
Its always "what I feel..." with these kind non technical artsy kind of people with implicit declaration from them their feeling is better than yours and I am special look at me mindset. Never "what I know..." and I know from experience they are quick to being political and petty. And architects office is certainly that plus very stifling.
This jc college transfer guy wreaks of snobbery.
Great video on a great artist but whoever decided on the music and the mixing should be castrated
Architecture is applied art degree ya ding dongs. There are no theories since nothing is provable but only ideas. Only pretend man made (screwed up as much as man is capable of) complexity since art does not need to make sense
bullshit.
All of his buildings are same regardless of context yet he goes on and on about how his building fit their context. Real bs er
Great video and teaching but how annoying that Interstellar-like, crappy music is.
