Homelessness is no longer just for drug users. It’s also for the working class. Those who work 40 hours a week and still can’t afford rent. You make $2000-$3000 a month and still can’t afford anything in this city. I’m even talking about those with shiny bachelors degrees. Heck even EMTs and CNAs can make $16-$20 hour and still not be able to afford housing.

      Exactly
I deliver groceries. It ain’t much but it’s honest work. It’s about 3-4k a month. I simply cannot qualify for even the smallest place. Cant find anything. I sleep in my car most the week and occasionally hotels to keep clean and feel like a person for a little bit. Tonight’s hotel was covered by Airbnb which was nice. Had a cancellation. It was supposed to be 340/mo (I have actually found rent that low believe it or not) and he messaged me saying it’s actually 7K a month. SEVEN THOUSAND A MONTH. For a one bed one bath place that you aren’t allowed to cook in… l can’t wait to see California real estate plummet. This is ridiculous.

We old people don't have any reason to go on. WE have nobody we can give our love and kindness to and nobody to give any to us but our fur babies. When we don't have them we're just waiting to die.

The many empty warehouses/office buildings in California will be having to pay their mortgage in 2 years, if the office space is used or not, as some companies haven’t been paying since the pandemic 2022, but mortgage rents are collected every few years, sometimes with late fees attached. If the companies can’t pay they’re moved out, yet those empty buildings could be converted to studios/apartments by the government/banks who repossess them

Seemed nobody including councils wanted us anywhere and my question to this day remains “where to you want homeless people to be then huh!” Treating your fellow man like s**t no matter what their circumstances says everything about the people treating you like that. I'm a permanently disabled, Blind Senior that has been homeless over a year. I was living in Senior housing but due to a new director on the board had a conflict with ME personally I was thrown, literally, into the street after 30 days. I lived there over 4 years, paid my rent faithfully, never missed, got along with all the other tenants and when I asked why, they said they didn't have a reason and didn't need one. It was on December 8. 2021 during Covid and in the Rocky Mountains, snowing. I had lived in the County 36 years, worked, paid taxes, involved in schools, community, raised 2 sons myself, that are good citizens, and because someone didn't like me, I was homeless with nowhere to go. They even took my power chair and disposed of it. I am BLIND, alone, and terrified, can't drive, no public transportation. So, it can happen to anyone, for no reason even. I've never felt so down, scared, ashamed, and hopeless. My disability with the new big raise is $906
A month. I can't afford rent and I physically can't work. I want to but, my body says no way. We are homeless and hopeless out here. If I was an illegal alien I would be cared for, or a criminal. Why is crime so rampant, why are there crazy, angry people everywhere, why are our citizens homeless?? Jobless??? We take care of everybody else but our own. We have VETERANS that are homeless, without medical care, but we send BILLIONS to Ukraine, Turkey, anybody have a problem? Uncle Sam will help!! unless you're an American. People thonk SeniorsvNd Disabled people are taken care of. We are NOT. Let me know when there's a glimmer of hope. Lol. I'm in the 1992 White Jeep, living there. Those RVs look pretty good to me with rent I might be able to pay.

What people don’t understand is that many of these ‘homeless’ people are paying the same amount for those RVs as rent costs for apartments. No one is renting to a homeless person because of the well intentioned, yet flawed legislation that makes it SO difficult to evict here.. I offered 3 months rent plus deposit for a place they just would not rent to me because of my credit which was only low from student loans and as an artist with difficult to prove/inconsistent income I got stuck in a cycle of way more expensive subleases. We need affordable houses but more than that we need landlords to actually rent to people with less than a 700 credit score. These RVs are a symptom of this public health emergency, not the cause.

I have a caravan totally redone so you can live in it year round. Though I have an apartment I realized years ago if you have one major expensive drawback and it is usually medical I am in trouble so I bought this van and I slowly fixed it up for an elderly woman the last thirteen years after my husband passed away. I knew the day would come that I will not be able to afford an apartment, medicine and food at the same time. It is sad that you work your whole life for what? A caravan, smh. I started working at twelve and my husband at ten, now in my late fifties and my husband gone I decided to travel around the USA and Canada the day after I retire.
America where no one cares until your in the same boat. We are one paycheck from the street and the things the politicians want you to care about isn't paying the bills or putting a roof over your head nor food on the table. I don't care about woke, hunter's laptop, trump, biden, or who hates who for whatever reason their grey cells get all affronted about. I do care about people who for no reason but money constraints will be homeless, I know a few that you would never believe that are as of right now without a home. I am thankful I planned ahead and if something happens to me at least someone in my family will have a use for it.

IMHO, the billions being appropriated to "fight the homeless crisis" in California, are at best misused. There are numerous variables that surround the general idea of 'homelessness", so I'll stick to this specific "issue" of RV's being used for housing.
I can't imagine it would take much of an investment for LA county to establish a trailer park of sorts, for those who have found hard times and have turned to an RV for their temporary or even permanent residence. IMHO, those who reside in an RV have done so by necessity and by choice.
I happen to be one in that group of people. How I got here is too long to get into. Why I have chosen my RV as home is simply because its was my best option to support myself and maintain an avenue to regain the financial stability I once had before I fell into difficult times. I would like to think many are similar to my situation. I do not litter the streets as if its my personal garbage can, I dont hijack public utilities for my personal use, I dont commit crimes against others, nor do I resort to theft for any reason. I'm not confortable by no means, but everyone goes through difficult times and its how we choose to confront it that matters . I don't believe its a "one size fits all" solution for "homelessness" nor is it a good use of effort and resources for a city or county to criminalize or make it more difficult for those who are obviously doing what they can to rise up from their situation.

Time for you to hire a couple carpenters and start spending your money on the conversion- make sure you do absolutely everything up to code to avoid any potential lawsuits from your tenants. While you are waiting on the permits (good luck on that BTW), you should tell your home insurance company about your plans- they will have some adjustments to make on your premium. You will want to look into how this income will affect your tax returns, but of course if you give it to people for free that probably wont be an issue. Also, you probably should also read up about squatters rights in CA- you'll also want to secure a lawyer or two for some point down the road just in case. It’s not that easy.. It costs almost as much money as building something new from the ground up to make these places work. The biggest issue with retrofitting old commercial buildings is they weren’t designed for all the plumbing that would be needed.
They weren’t built to code for residential use.. and there’s too much red tape politically. You’d have to get the zoning changed as well, and the citizens near those areas would oppose it. Everybody wants to solve homelessness, but nobody wants them near where they live. It’s a no win situation.
