  • This video demonstrates how to work a garter tab cast on for knitting. It's a great way to start a top-down shawl that will have a garter stitch selvedge, and results in a straight and seamless top edge. The demonstration uses the example of creating 11 shawl stitches, but substitute the given stitch and row numbers for those specified in your pattern.

Thank you for this clear video on garter tab cast on! The use of the crocheted chain makes picking up the initial cast on stitches not only easier to see as well knowing you are picking up the correct ones. I've watched several tutorials and this by far makes the most sense to me. Thanks, again!

You almost, almost, have it...!!! I clicked Liked b/c I appreciate your video being so clear, the description with your assuring voice but really, mostly, for your inquisitiveness searching for another and better way to learn how to do this technique so that it looks neater and more caring... I said "almost have it" for there is yet one more way to go about the whole thing faster and cleaner... added to, not instead of, the crochet chain start as you are showing us here... Have subscribed to check once in a while and see how you are doing... Take it from a very, very old knitter that could be your great-grand-mother...!!! Life is just a process of learning how to do everything better and figure out short cuts to that which we have chosen to do in this journey and make it sweeter... Love you...!

These ones are KA Seeknit needles! They're Japanese needles that I get from 1morerow.com.au here in Australia (from memory I was sent this particular pair from 1 More Row as a freebie sample to try), but I know they're stocked at yarn shops around the world too :)
