David Godman is a rare man who knows everything about spirituality but doesn't make any claims to realisation. Not even a glimps of the state! What an amazing man! Another amazing man is Michael James. Both Michael and David have been on the Gas Pump podcast and they were the only two guests who didn't announce themselves divine! There was one man, David Bennett, who claimed to be higher than Jesus and the Buddha (like one isn't enought!), but Michael James and David Godman have lived in India and speak the language but are humble. True men of the world! Well done to these rare English men, well done!

@Moesy - I have watched several of David Godman's videos and totally agree with your sentiments. Anyone who is as knowlegable as David would be riding a high horse. His humbleness is touching and his knowledge is immense. Being an Indian, it is a both a pain & joy to listen to David. It's pain to see that, as we did with hundreds of other saints, we have ignored Bhagavan too and English man has to teach us about Bhagavan. At the same time, it's absolutely a joy to see the fruits of Indian rishis teachings go beyond India. Our rishis teachings was always intended for the whole world. They were beyond race, creed, religion. Their goal was universal.
David not sure how many people you have impacted. You have touched my life through your amazing videos.🙏

Although I get your sentiment, having spiritual experiences and talking about them by no means makes someone a villain. It is a blessing to be graced with such experiences. Boasting or bragging is of course, not the point - but to share this knowledge with others and most importantly incorporate and integrate the realizations into ones own life and relationships.

    Dearest David,
Bowing at your lotus feet. Wow just finished watching this. Your beauty and love for Ramana is breathtaking. I have immense respect. Also, I see a up-coming film about his devotees that he has dramatically effected after he left his body. Ramana is powerful. WOW what a great fortune to have been touched by his grace. If I told the average person they would think I have gone crazy so I just keep quiet. I can’t even believe this love. THANK YOU for keeping his teachings so fresh and so alive. I am in tears. THANK YOU

I've got a fever once, like never before, and I had visions: I'we seen Bhagavan standing at the end of my bed, with a golden light around Him. I've felt an enormous happiness. He wasn't talking, but I "knew" 3 things for certain in this order: 1. A Guru is needed. 2. I do need a Guru. 3. Bhagavan is my Guru.... :) That was all. Namaste, dear Mr. Godman, you have all the blessings.

Fascinating story about the boyhood friend and Bhagavan directing energy to his forehead. The boys reaction is just like what happens when something unwinds at that point. i know from experience, fortunately I've been through that fear of death into what's beyond but I'm sure that fear can feel too much for many. it's a wonder how Bhagavan knew how to bring about this experience in his friend but nothing is beyond him.

If a devotee meditates regularly(burning up his vasanas and karmas), he is not only helping the self(jiva) but also his Guru('s body). Otherwise Guru will take a part of his karmas which might affect Guru's body (unless he goes into samadhi states often). I have heard about this from my Guru. He said "A Guru should be capable of removing the karmas of disciples and also make sure that those karmas does not affect his body (possibly by going into deeper meditaions as Bhagawan Ramana Maharshi was doing)". I have also heard a statement from another Guru - "Dhyanagni (fire from meditation) dagdha karmani (burns ones karmas)". So, I think all seekers should meditate regularly.

(With all respect )Something does not seems right. Does this not imply in some way a sort of "magic". And thus passes by the whole concept of Advaita , ( where the Guru "points to that what one already is)
If one being can "burn away the Karma of "another"? . This would be pure dualism.
It is almost as a Catholic priest had the "authorization" from God, to "forgive/absolve" the sin of another . ( i am stretching my comparison to make a point, don't take it literary) in short: With no " Powerful sage being around , one is f..cked. But (for example) happening to be , a neighbor of a true sage .. , or having money to find one, is enough to burn up lifetimes of karma.....

It seems that we cannot escape from our prisons with reason or trying to fathom out what does or does not make sense. Surely a great place to start is to follow the directions in NanYar ....work on stopping the thoughts (uncontrolled thoughts, imaginations, associations etc) by internally asking "who is having these thoughts?" and when we answer "I am.." this quells them and brings us back to a sense of ourselves....David says here that Maharshi said that our ability to do this can be a measure of success.....all these reward words are wrong....but we can verify from our own experience. If after a serious attempt one concludes it is a useless endeavour then move on if you want....but it requires no leap of faith...it is almost a psychological tool to clear out all the bugs in our minds or what seems to be our mind. See what happens after this (which might take some time as we have all become quite a deluded mess).
Your curiosity is peaked as you have left 2 comments that I see...and you say that this is new exposure of Maharshi.....in that case look at some of the other videos that David Godman has produced. He is a sound introduction to the Maharshi because he does not embellish of bring himself into the picture....he reports as objectively as he can. Michael James also seems to be a sound source once you tune into his expression.
Buddha at the Gas Pump also has a very good interview with Godman that helps to clarify.
      (with all respects)

@Musical Paradox - "happening to be , a neighbor of a true sage" - This does not guarantee anything. There might be a sage living next door to you but you can spend a lifetime being totally oblivious of him. Or, you can spend a lifetime going around the world looking for a spiritual master, come back home dejected and find that he was always there living next door to you. It all depends on the spiritual state of your mind. Quoting from another school of yoga, "Your spiritual Master is looking out for you as hard as you're searching for him." And, that obviously means that you have prepared your body and mind for that meeting.

As a Indian this a question for myself and for all my fellow Indians - For how long will we ignore our great Rishis / Avadhuthas? Do we Indians really realise that we are born in a Holy land? Just look at the number of Rishis /Gynanis in last couple of centuries or so - Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi, Sri Shridi Sai Baba, Rama Krishna Paramhamsa, Akkalot Maharaj, Tajuddin Baba, Anandmayi Maa, Meher Baba. I can easily 20 more names from last century. Is there a holier land in the world? But, we hardly cherish it. Isn't it?
Even in this comment section, the whole world is awake to Bhagavan's teachings. But hardly any Indian presence. Hope we wake up and see the Holy land we are really born in.

such wisdom is rare to get. i have been pondering over this energy thing right from days of being with sarada amma and lakshmana swamy too. and i view what lakshmana swamy has said echoes mostly with that of ramana maharshi. but one intriguing thing is alagammals liberation as to her future rebirths are prevented. now who would fill in that role she is supposed to perform in future births. example say she was supposed to be a mother or father to some children in future now that she has attained moksha, who would be the parent of those children ?

The experience of putting pencil at third eye and imparting experience and his friend couldn't take it all reminds me of Ramakrishna imparting spiritual experience to Mathur by touching his heart because Mathur asked him for it. After few days Mathur came to Ramakrishna and asked him to take it back because he couldn't do anything and go about his business. He said he doesn't understand what happened to him as if he now moves, does everything as mother makes him do. He can't go around his worldly business in that state. Ramakrishna did take the experience back. The Swami who wrote gave explanation which I don't know how true it is that without that level of renunciation one can't hold the experience.
But then Ramakrishna had given this self experience in samadhi to several of his householder followers who used to go into samadhi easily. Master Mahashay was one of them and others too.
I can't doubt sitting in presence of someone who is vibrating at higher level of self experience within does transmit energy. For a very weird reason I believe even their belongings or clothing or where they sat radiates energy even after they leave.
But it could be Mathur was excessively worldly man compared to other householder followers of Ramakrishna so for him to go about his business with self experience could be a big challenge.
In fact someone questioned to a Swami why Ramakrishna gave the experience to Mathur considering Mathur wasn't a man of strong morals.
I was amazed at the answer
But Ramakrishna did gave him the experience few times. Once when Mathur went into tears during Durga Puja when mothers form was being taken away and he got emotional that he won't let the Murti leave temple and started to cry and it's quite strange that someone not of great morals could have devotion too but then Ravan was devotee too.
Ramakrishna had touched his heart and given him experience to silence him then too telling him mother exist in his heart not the stone image.
But at the end Ramakrishna had admitted that Mathur didn't get liberated. He said he would be born again in some good family because of his acts of devotion. Spirituality is a weird path it's hard to understand in how many ways God brings us back home. But this video made me think today that Guru knows within what is right for us and how much of this experience we can hold based on our past karma. If we have started to walk we are assured we were chosen to be on it. We will get there. Forcing an experience may lead to death over deathlessness in spirit. Guru knows our life path better than us. If we trust we would never go astray.
This video was a good reminder 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

David, some of us have seen some spontaneous bodily movements in devotees sitting before yogis - are there any such instances with Bhagavan? Could you also tell us about such movements. Thank you.

3 days after I was discharged from ICU following a lobectomy for lung cancer in 2020 i dreamt of a man sitting across an unlit dhuni and talking to me saying "it's because of your mother, your mother" and the dream ended, i never understood. After i extensively researched i found out that the person in my dream was Ramana Maharshi. I didn't know anything about him before. I went to shirdi and came across 2 priests who look just like Bhagavan, one of them gave me a coconut in dwarkamai and the other made me pray at Khandoba temple. A year later i realized they both looked like twins of Bhagavan

David, regarding Bhagavan's vision of his Mother's curtailed future births: presumably other jivas were destined to interact with those lives. How does her moksha affect this? I have a Buddhist understanding of karma and there's a lot of "give" there which I can't quite square with destiny as it is portrayed in Bhagavan's teaching.

Those who lived in the time of Ramana where fortunate to be able to experience directly the power of his Grace. If for us living in these times we cannot find a living guru with such power of Grace, that would mean some further incarnation with such possibility if we cannot make it on our own this time round??? Or can the power of the Grace of Ramana work then indirectly through his disciples like Papaji (since he said Ramana was speaking through him) but he passed away too, but then other living teachers may be used as conduits for Ramana's grace as a possiblity??? Just wondering...

Though i love to hear new (to me) teachings of Bhagavan. It bring also a feeling of longing" ?. Not having ' saints or sages" of this caliber walking around in Western European cities. It seems that one is then " spiritually disabled". Why "suffer and seek" if the touch of a saint is enough? This "magic" also seems to point to duality. One person needing "an-other " to get liberated.
The paradox about the teachings presented here, is that Bhagavan himself did not had a Guru himself...It even seems if more then half of the "great Saints" did not have a Guru. (Anandamayi ma, was born "awake", Nisagidatta only met "his"Guru two or three times, etc. )

Bhagavan did have a Guru, the mountain of Arunachala!

Well, whether you get the 'touch of a saint' depends on your karma... as for 'not having saints or sages of this caliber walking around in Western European cities', do we have the spiritual insight to recognize a saint living next door to us? That again depends on how much spiritually awakened we're ourselves which again depends on how much effort we're putting on it in this lifetime and how much we had in previous ones.

The supreme consciousness manifest itself in al the forms (Humans, animals, etc.), therefore, there is only One which is that. That which manifest itself as many. Although, we may see ourselves separate from other forms, because we are thinking we are the body and mind, we are not separate at all. The Supreme Self, is all. That is why it is said, all of humanity is already realized, but they are not aware, because, the body and mind (I'am) idea blinds it. Therefore, instead of being (Self), we suffer the consequences of the mind and body which are unstable and false.
Another body and mind that is in the Self (Truth), guides us (The body and mind) to our true source/being (Self).

Indian Einstein Ramana never accepted any formal disciples - he saw no ‘others’ who needed enlightenment. If however you feel like you do then Ramana is already your guru (teacher).

To me it seems that even people like Ramana Maharshi can have a lot of cultural beliefs that they dont even question the legitimacy of, like the talk about karma and karma in future lives etc.

I have a question: I thought Ramana Maharshi was the quintessential spontaneously realized man. My understanding is that enlightenment just happened to him completely unbidden and that soon-after he retreated to caves, etc. etc. But when I read his words they are utterly jargon-filled. I know a little bit about Hinduism (excuse the term), Vedanta and so forth but I had to get out my dictionary to review some of the "technical" language he used heavily. Where did he acquire all this technical jargon? I can't be the only person wondering about this . . .any ideas? Namaste.

Devotees brought questions to him from Advaita Vedanta texts, he then read those books so as to answer their questions. It was this way that he became familiar with Ribhu Gita, Advaita Bodhika Deepa, Yoga Vashishta etc. Up until his spontaneous realization, all he had read was Periya Puranam

What exactly happens if liberation is achieved at death? There is no need for human incarnation, but is there no existence at all? If there is existence, as what? And would an enlightened being choose to reincarnate in any case to help humanity? Thanks for your thoughts!

Do you know if an artist has commissioned a rendering of this banyan tree/palmyra tree combo? I have googled it every way I can and can’t come up with it anything. If anyone knows of a photographic print/sketch/painting of this I would pay for the commission. I watched this video a while ago and cannot get this story/tree combo out of my dreams. ❤️
