One way of using the bits of leftover ham is to put them in a food processor and pulse until fine. Add some chopped spring onion, some grated cheese and a little light mayonnaise. It makes a lovely filling for a toasted sandwich.

Oh I love this tip Edwina. I might have to go dig out a ham from the freezer to make that sandwich!

I’ve never seen a ham hock that big before! At least not in the US. I’m jealous!😂

oh isn't it funny how different the cuts are. Just doing it to confuse us home cooks !

For this recipe and the method it was just what I was looking for and I really like the idea of freezing Cubes of ham

Hope you enjoy it Maddang. Yes in these times we can stretch the food a bit further too doing this. Ham gives so much flavour from such a little portion.

@@CookingandCalm Unfortunately the hock wasn't the best. It was unsmoked organic and looked mainly grey. I wonder if the smoking process makes them looked pink - which is what I'm more used to seeing. I really appreciate your videos. You come across as so calm where so many others are shouting and so fast!
I'm so impressed with your organic garden. I hope it's going well. I used felt bags lined up against the car park wall this year and had purple sprouting broccolli, fiorentino beef toms and ox heart toms, cherry toms, capsicums, runner beans and cucumbers - although the latter 2 didn't do so well. You learn something new every year!

I'm so glad Susan recommended the bmp (that's bagel, mayo & pickle) towards the end of this well done video- thanks Susan!

Thank you - I might just pop out and get some ham out of the freezer now you've reminded me of those delicious bagels! Thanks for stopping by and kind words 😊

Making this just now for halloween tomorrow and was keen to see timeing for the pot so thank you. I always add 1 star annise, couple of cloves and peppercorns to my ham water when cooking, really makes a difference to depth of flavour. Thanks again for great video 🙏🏼

Thank you so much - yes and we get quite a few more of those over here. It's frosty outside today and now you've got me wondering about that ham hock I know I have in the garage freezer :)

Hello, when you start off cooking the ham hock in cold water, could you use hot water instead? Thank you.

I’ve not tried it but don’t see why not . Cooking from cold helps if you are ever wanting a very clear stock

Don’t have an instant pot.... oh lord not something else to purchase! A pressure canner and a dehydrator found their way to our cottage last month! I’m canning bedside our freezer could break down and power cuts could happen. My lovely butcher has ham hocks for sale sadly few found in supermarkets these days! Made four quarts of yellow split pea and ham soup in the canner!

Yes ham hocks are pretty rare and I only recently rediscovered them - I get most of my meat from an online company (Wild Meat) and they stock them if your butcher ever runs out.

I did several searches on RUclips for Instant Pot lentil soup and each one came up with only vegan recipes. Recipes with meat were nowhere to be found. I had to specify pork lentil soup before yours came up. Apparently RUclips is "woke" and only wants to promote vegan recipes whenever possible. But that limits yours and others' number of views as a result.
