    I worked with Carol on an ad campaign. She was MUCH larger than life. People say, "They don't make them like that anymore." But the truth is, they never made them like that. She was unique.

    Just goes to show how popular Judy's Palace engagement was at the time. And I'm pretty sure Garland would have found Carol's lampooning quite hysterical.

      Thank you so much for that! I was thinking the same thing. Judy had such a big heart and fantastic sense of humor and she really enjoyed/appreciated talent. That’s why she had some of the greatest stars on her tv show - loved to embrace her fellow artists!

      I agree, she probably did see it and laughed her ass off - many accounts by those who knew her said Judy had a earthy, show-biz sense of humor and didn't take herself seriously, certainly not as seriously as many purported fans who have commented below. They don't seem to get that this is a parody of many other performers, that was a part of Channing's comedy act, and they write it off as simply mean-spirited. Nothing like. "Forbidden Broadway" has long been enjoyed by the people made fun of, and performed by many of those same people: broadway singers and dancers who have a sense of humor about it all.

    Actually, the person she is mainly making fun of here is Betty Hutton, who followed Judy at the Palace. Hutton would always put a towel around her neck after changing into a robe, talking about how rough her life was. Of course, there is a lot of Judy in here too, the bluebird/sitting on the stage references. It's all in fun.

    "Show Girl" was a show way ahead of its time. And, on the other hand, which couldn't translate effectively to the current time. That's why Channing assumed the audience was as much in on the show business jokes as she was said. Some of the show was truly naughty, and all of the show was sutble but she took it successfully to many places with great success.

    • @jgregveneklasen2657
      @jgregveneklasen2657 Год назад

      Yes, revues of the day - New Faces, Parade, etc. - were often full of parodies of big shows and stars, much like "Forbidden Broadway." The assumption of knowing the biz so you're in on the jokes underlies it all.

      1961, 8 years before. Since this riffed on SEVERAL other performers who did the Palace comebacks, it would and did have a shelf life, and a good comedienne would now when to move on to other material, as she did.

  • @jgregveneklasen2657
    @jgregveneklasen2657 Год назад

    This was a take-off on MULTIPLE "big comeback" stars of the '30s-'40s who had brought their show to the Palace at the time, as Channing explains in the opening. Channing's act for many years by then was filled with of broad parodies and imitations; contemporary audiences would have known and come for that.
    [To all you pearl-clutching Judy worshippers, it's not all about her, and besides, Judy herself probably would have laughed her ass off because she had a wicked sense of humor and didn't take herself anywhere near as seriously as you all do.]

    • @jgregveneklasen2657
      @jgregveneklasen2657 Год назад

      Like other revues of the day - New Faces, Parade, etc. - it was aimed at savvy theater audiences who knew and had seen much of what was referenced, much like "Forbidden Broadway." Many other performers than just Garland and Hutton did the Palace comeback; Channing named several of them, you just don't recognize the names.

    If this was from "Showgirl,"...and it would have been nice of the poster to give us some background info on it...then this was in 1961, and thereby ten years after Judy Garland's 1951 turn at the Palace, and five years after her 1956 appearance. So, I'd say it has little to do with Garland. In any case the material is not to my taste, but apparently it is to many posters here.

      Try not to worship Garland, and remember that Judy herself was not in the Cult of Judy; various accounts said she laughed her ass off at parodies of herself because she had a frickin' sense of humor. Also this wasn't just Garland, it was a bunch of others who did the Palace, as Channing explained in the lead-in. Channing was famous not just for her broadway shows, but broad comedy, imitations and parodies, and her audience definitely had a good time.

      You're using 2020s lenses on 60 year old material: parody and topical humor are not "low blows" beneath her or any other comedian. Revues like this one - New Faces, Parade, etc. - were often full of parodies of current shows and stars, much like "Forbidden Broadway." There was a steady New York theater crowd then who likely saw everything she's referencing (and possibly including some of those performers).

    I never understood the appeal of Carol Channing.She wasn't pretty & had a crappy sounding voice. I also find her impression of Judy Garland to be 3rd rate. Making fun of a Great Star shows sour grapes. Judy's run in all of her 3 Palace runs, broke records. If I didn't read the title of this video clip, I would never have thought she was impersonating Garland. This isnt entertaining. But I wanted to post my thought. Judy's legend thank God can endure these petty insults.
