That whole scene with Rex about to abandon everyone was... wow. I’ve played the game before, but that scene still gets me. Everyone trying to talk sense into Rex, slapping him and stuff, until eventually Poppi comes in, almost does as well, but then just talks to Rex. Fun fact, in the entirety of Xenoblade 2, I’ve only to cried 3 times, and that scene was one of them.
This was the first moment of the game I cried. There are two more scenes after this that I cried for. I did not cry for Vandham until Chuggaaconroy played it. His appreciation for the character made that death hit me harder than when I played. There are also a few more scenes I cried at after playing Torna. Like Jin stabbing Haze.
To be honest it was so random when she opened her eyes and only in that scene in the whole game, I prefer to think that she's blind like the rest of the game sort of implied before that.

Oh sweet Zanza, in the next episode we get to the part where the *actual* story starts (no really in retrospect everything since Mythra awakened was filler, and this is where Story gets really good), as Flyann enters Chapter 7, which is simultaneously one of this game's best, and worst chapters. Also a quick pro-tip there is an altar in Theosir that gives you a rare blade, that is good on Zeke, its near the city entrance behind a cracked wall.

Once upon a time, the frozen lake in the middle of the lower area was actually open water. You could take a short cut by jumping down from above into it. It was patched out later. Also nice that flyann dropped by during the ether storm weather, where he got to see those Lovecraftian squoods.
Poppi's VA is absolutely fucking stellar in the last scene here, and in one more coming up near the end of the game. She has just the right amount of emotion to hit you in the fucking gut.
you might have the protagonist give up early on because he faces a challenge he needs to overcome to develop. That would be maybe when vandham died in chapter 3. But no they have it late game where everyone has known each other for a while and relationships are developed. Rex’s pride was hurt so much because he had never experienced a loss like this. He was willing to give up, leave his friends and the girl he loved, and forget everything. Only when his hypocrisy is pointed out he is left speechless and the third aegis sword is discovered he has motivation again. Goes to show Rex is really a kid who was full of himself and had reality slap him in the face.
Just to comment on your question. 'Chum' is used in some parts of the UK to mean 'friend', although the way it's used would already show you that is what was meant.... it's used in some regions in the UK, just like people use 'mate' 'bro' etc.

if you grind during the escape scene the soldiers can give you a accessory called the modern medal that heals you 15% of critical damage. This outclasses nia as a healer. Critical heal mythra is incredibly op.

Yeah, the point where they make you do an entire chapter without pyra&mythra, I have bad memory of it (was late at night so I kinda rushed the chapter just to get them back before going to sleep, and had to grind because I was to week during the malos fight at the end, and again for the fight against Malos and Jin)

This is my favorite video game ever and even I forgot how godlike the plot is in like the entire second half.

xc2 is certaintly more character oriented, but imo the character designs and voice acting is kinda bad in xc2 and makes me like xc1 more.
Xenoblade 2 has superior character cast, after playing both 1 and 2 many times 2 became my favorite
