The plastic teeth wear out quite quickly if you are working on harder timbers like we have here in AU.
Even when they are new and sharp, they don't bite on harder timbers.
We have common timbers here in AU, that are harder than the plastic, even when green
Metal spikes are well worth the small cost and time taken.
Almost as cheap and easy is the replacement of the tensioner, with a side access type.

I'm curious to know why you owned an MS 180 and then purchased a new homeowner saw and stepped down a bit to the MS 170. Why'd you step down and what are your thoughts on the two saws? Thanks.
Also, there is a $5 upgrade you might want to consider for these saws, which is the chain tensioner. You can remove the factory one (that points forward on the inside of the bar) and replace it with the more user-friendly design that uses the hole in your clutch cover between the two nuts ... which is much more convenient to use.

I have a sthil ms 125 and the spikes or felling dogs I find are not long enough to bite the wood when cutting rings or odd shapes of wood it’s a shame that sthil has not done any upgrades to this like with the other sthil chainsaws or other makes of chainsaws that have bigger teeth on the felling spikes or dogs

They look like thin junk metal, wouldn't it be better to buy the OEM stihl 1123/00 Dawgs?

I tried to look for OEM and it’s been a year or two since I bought those but I don’t remember seeing them.

Also, these aren’t made from the greatest material in my experience, but they’re good enough I’d say.

You use them to bite into a log and a pivot point to work down through that log. Very functional. I’m not try to throw insults but I question how much you’ve used a chainsaw if you say they are just for looks.

If all you do is limbing and very small trees/branches, then the dogs will never come into play. If you ever buck logs, then it's incredibly handy to bite into the side of the log and use that as a lever/fulcrum point to work the bar.

You obviously don’t know how to use a chainsaw then because if you did and you didn’t have metal dogs your plastic ones would have been worn out within the first 3 months. The metal ones will never wear out. You should be using your spikes to claw into the wood

Saws not powerful enough to require these. Waste of time.
