It's funny -- I like Lucky Star too, but the context in which I first watched the show actually makes it a lot harder to watch nowadays; When I first watched it, I was a cringy fucking weeb degenerate hanging out with other cringy weeb degenerates, and while I can look back fondly on the fun we had watching the show, I do NOT look back fondly on how much of a cringe machine I was back then, hahahaha

Thanks for pointing me to this video. Essentially, yes. I agree with pretty much agree with everything you said.
To the uninitiated, I watched Lucky Star completely blind. They say that it's a show that is only funny because of the references and I couldn't disagree more. Being the first show that brought me back into Otaku culture, I latched on to the characters and random musings of daily life that transpired in the show. After realizing that the show had a ton of references, I decided to expand my anime repertoire. Every time I re-watch the series, I'd catch something that I had previously missed and no other show has had this kind of re-watch value for me. Lucky Star also taught and introduced me to many aspects of Otaku culture and essentially paved the way for my own fandom.
But I think that this leads into a bigger point. Similarly, I hate people who say that you can't explain jokes. I see it as a chance to learn. A chance to get a deeper understanding of something that you like. But maybe that's how I enjoy media. As an aspiring translator myself, I find this even more pertinent as I hate it when fansubbers translate Japanese puns and wordplay. No! I want to understand how the humor was derived and in what context the joke was meant to be understood in and the people that it was meant to appeal to. But that's really another topic for another time, perhaps something that I'd tackle in one of my own videos someday. (^.^)

As someone new to the anime community I would say that shows like this get worth from the fact that they are time capsules. I as a newcomer get to see what used to be.

This video made me happy, and part of that was music choice, making this video not only a meditation on context, but an exercise in it too. Digi's dancing, however, doesn't require any context to make me happy. It's already delightful on it's own.
Re: "References are the lowest form of humor": I think the problem is that it's really, really easy to do references wrong. Many works try to add humor by adding a reference, and then going "This is something you (hopefully) recognize! Isn't it funny?"

I'd love to hear your thoughts on Nichijou (another KyoAni slice-of-life), if you ever feel like doing that! It'd be a good opportunity to talk about "random" non-sequitor humor in anime as well.
Not to get too meta, but this video and the thoughts you express are themselves adding to the cultural context and importance I find surrounding Lucky Star. Like, you essentially retroactively made my lucky star experience that much better. I personally find having un-gotten jokes and references explained to me to be an enriching experience because now I feel that much more "in-the-know". And, Digibro, if your still reading this, your honest, agreeable, goofy/charming, and sincerely friendly demeanor reminds me of the kind of good friends I have lovingly marathon-ed anime with in the past. Watching this brought that warm fuzzy feeling to the table as well. Not nostalgia, but perhaps a universally understood reference to the graces good company. Thanks for being my post-experiential, not-in-person-but-in-spirit, kindred anime viewing buddy.

Lucky Star for me is that warm piece that I go to in order to feel happy or cheerful. When I have a shitty day and I need a pick me up, lucky star is always there to bring out a smile on my face. Not only because of the content but also partly because I spent much of my christmas break one year watching it. Sitting with my laptop by the fireplace surrounded by my family (even if they weren't watching with me) is one of those memories that you look back on positively. And for that Lucky Star will always have a place close to my heart. Thanks for this!

Honestly I never really liked this anime too much for various reasons, but I do agree with you that pop culture references aren't intrinsically bad as a form of comedy. Some very long running western animations, like The Simpsons and Family Guy (particularly the later) are mostly JUST pop culture references. And yes, they can be funny if done well.
That being said, the biggest problem with Lucky Star is that it wants to be two shows at the same time. On one part it's attempting to be a funny (and oddly, towards the end with Konata's mother's inclusion, heart warming) slice of life show, but it also attempts to be a parody at the same time. The thing is, the parody stuff, particularly the otaku stuff isn't as funny as it could be simply because in the Lucky Star universe everything is all rainbows and unicorn farts all the time.
Contrast Konata with Tomoko from WataMote and you'll find that even though Tomoko is a terrible stereotype of a borderline hikimori and otaku, she's actually a MORE likable character because of her failings and limitations. The fact that she is more or less, a really terrible person in a lot of ways, makes her more relatable because her failings are ones that pretty much all of us have at one point or another. The humor comes from her bizarre otaku-fueled solutions to these failings, which makes it self-referential to the very people who are watching the show. I challenge anyone who hasn't watched a heap of anime or played a bunch of eroge to NOT be able to follow Tomoko's (often flawed) reasoning. Of course, it's utterly wrong, but to those of us with the similar experience, it makes sense. The funny part is watching her do the things that (thankfully) most of us would never really do...
It's kind of like what Mel Brooks said, "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die."
That's why I don't like Lucky Star. I feel like I'm certainly supposed to like it because I get all the jokes, but I can't find anything funny in it because in a way even the parodies are treated reverentially and with respect. Inversely, I laugh my ass off at WataMote because it often painfully skewers stuff that I am intimately familiar with.
Of course, all of this is more or less irrelevant if you're like Tomoko and I and just can't stand "anime moeshit". I honestly gave Lucky Star a chance despite of this, and ultimately walked away pretty bored and for all the reasons I illustrated previously.

I think the whole reference jokes being called the lowest form of comedy is dependent on the lazier Minority of references being blunt and unintelligent rather than as you said a well placed reference.
Shows like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star were actually some of my firsts getting into anime, and I can recall laughing along to the parts I knew were supposed to be references, even though I didn't know what they were referencing, and coming back to watch this again different times after I had watched much more anime and actually realizing what the references were to, and laughing at it again. Lucky Star will probably always hold a special place in my heart, alongside TMOHS, and FMA(:B).

Everything about this makes me happy and sad about my youth!
I can speak from personal experience how much of a difference context can make when watching an anime, within the last two years I watched Rose of Versailles, Space Adventure Cobra, and some early Lupin specials all of which were directed by Osamu Dezaki. Who is one of the most influential directors in anime history and knowing about the animation techniques he created (which became pretty common place in the 80s and 90s) and seeing them being used in those anime really added an extra layer of appreciation to my viewing experience.
Another example from earlier this year I watched all of the original Cutey Honey and seeing all the elements that Sailor Moon lifted from it and the impact it had on the Magical Girl genre turned a terrible anime into a fascinating viewing experience.
Hail Zeon I still get excited when I see "harmonies" in anime (those still, high-detail shot Dezaki liked ending eps with). Perfect example, Kill la Kill did a ton of them as part of its nature as a throwback.
***** I didn't know Kill la Kill used harmonies, I love seeing those shots and I think it's a shame they aren't used very much anymore. Looks like I have one more reason to watch Kill la Kill.
***** When I think ending cards, I think post-credits illustrations. I'm talking more about shots used in dramatic moments. Dezaki usually used them for the last shot in an episode, though not exclusively.

Its so nice to know that someone else watched it with another person. When I first watched it I actually watched a couple of episodes and then decided to watch it with my sister. And to be honest while I had had earlier contact to anime, Lucky Star, to me, is my first anime.

Watched the show last year, no show has made me smile so much in my life. Awesome job
I have this same relationship with One Punch Man. OPM is a parody of what it means to be an action anime inside the anime culture. Each time i recommend the show i add a disclaimer that you probably wont enjoy the show as much if you're not a novice anime fan, as a lot of the show's comedy is driven by parodies of the cliché's of its medium. There is a general level of humour to be had from its casual comedy sketches, like when Saitama fails to swat a mosquito which i am sure anyone can relate to, but then there are the references to anime action cliché's like the infamous "OK" scene where Boros goes "Super Saiyain" that would fly right over a non-anime watcher. The show is brilliant, but its a satirical product of its time and culture that loses much of its substance/value if you remove it from its surroundings.
I'm not surprised. People partial to particular genres will often take those preferences across mediums. Most people have seen a Hollywood action movie even if they haven't seen any anime, so people can use that as a point of reference; and Hollywood isn't so obscure that nobody would understand the satire behind "power creep" or "entertainment creep" that occurs in our contemporary entertainment and lines OPM's ironic material. But that's still a very shallow experience of what the show has to offer.
I was recommended this show by a friend and have been watching it without context, and really enjoy it. :D
8:30 I'M SCREAMING BUT NOTHING'S HAPPENING!
The references in Lucky Star are just a part of it and it is possible to fall in love with the show because of everything except the references. When I first watched it not too long ago I understood about 40% of the references only, but I still laughed a lot and enjoyed the experience. Now that I keep watching it though I discover more and more references and it just makes the show even better, but to anyone thinking about watching this anime go ahead. You don't even have to remember what happened in 2007 to enjoy it.

Lucky Star is a great show to watch when your kinda burnt out on serious action or drama shows and just want to sit back, relax, and enjoy something without having to get too emotionally or intellectually invested in it.
That being said, the scene where Konata's mother Kanata was narrating as she watched over her and her dad made me tear up pretty bad lol
+yuraCORF Yes! There were a lot of moments that really resonated with me. Konata was the source of a lot of embarrassment actually, as part of me was jealous that she could be such a dedicated fan, but another side saying that these are all nothing but cringeworthy behaviors that should be avoided at all cost.
Even still, I loved to rewatch scenes over and over to draw out the emotional impact, especially if I felt there was any part lost on me the first time through, which happened a lot since it was one of the first anime I had actually seen

A good example of a show I love because of context is FLCL.
When I watched that show about 6 months ago I was going through an exstistential crisis, and this show helped me through that. It was weird, but me analyzing it took my mind off my problems. It also just gave me a new outlook on life.

I watched it in 2016 with no context and I found it funny because there was no plot, nothing that was going on really had a purpose, and I think that's what makes it great

Lucky star is one of my favourite childhood shows, basically because of everything you said about context. I watched it when I was just getting into anime and for me it was an introduction to otaku culture. Lucky star is the reason I understood Haruhi as being a really influential and important show, and I just loved that feeling of community. I also related to it personally through konata as she was quite similar to an 11 or 12 ish year old me, and the four girl group of friends was similar to my own four girl group of friends. It helped set the stage for the kinds of friends I wanted to have, and what would eventually become my real passion for anime. I loved their friendship and their life and I wanted something similar. And even now, years later, when I go back to watch it I somehow always find something new to relate to. Just the things they talked about I loved, because I would often get into conversations with my friends about shit like how to eat foods right. It just felt like a human experience I loved having and they got it so right.
Lucky Star is one of the childhood shows and games that really shaped me, along with Ouran and Fruits Basket and Studio Ghibli and Zelda.
And now i'll see a show that I just wish I had found around that time, because I feel like if I had watched it then it would probably be on that list. But there's still time
Aw man. I was probably the only Otaku on the planet who hated both Haruhi Suzumiya & Lucky Star at the height of both of their popularity. *Don't get me wrong, it's not like I hate those shows now,* it's just that at the time I was really anti "cute girls doing cute things" because I had assumed what with the occasional groping, panty shots and yuri undertones that it was some kind of sexual, borderline pedophilia type of thing. (I know now that moe isn't inherently sexual, but in some shows when high school girls act more like third graders? It's still pretty off-putting to me. I'm sorry I really really wish I could shake it!!)
At any rate, I remember I couldn't get passed episode 1 of Haruhi (in broadcast order) when I first saw it, but years and years later I watched it again and thought the episode was friggen hilarious. I guess it's 'cause I had watched enough anime to pick up on any deliberate "bad acting" when they were filming their "movie", and I was even able to appreciate the random stuff happening in the background. I actually made it all the way up to episode 7, and I probably would have finished it if my friend (who was watching it with me at the time) was feeling it too, but he wasn't.
I disliked episode 1 of Lucky Star when I first saw it because *the very first joke* that we see in the show was a friend asking Konata "Why don't you try out for the track team? You're really fast!" and Konata responding with "I can't, I'd miss my animes" or something to that effect. Late-2000's-me took offense to this because I was like "Uh YEAH That's actually a legit reason not to try out. ARE WE SUPPOSED TO BE LAUGHING *AT* HER?!" since I, too, was a hardcore Otaku (not as hardcore as you were at the time, but among my circle of friends, I was always the hardcore Otaku one) I identified with Konata's response. (basically I just didn't like how they were trying to make her look "weird" even though...for all intents and purposes, Otaku ARE weird!!)
Heck, I remember not wanting to go to Homecoming because it always took place on a Saturday and I would have missed my adultswim animes. (even though I had watched some of them while they were airing in Japan)
Though funny story; I was once in a hyperactive mood at school (somebody probably got me hyped for anime club stuff or something) and the teacher who was there had suggested that I try out for Cheerleading. Keep in mind I definitely don't "look" like a cheerleader, and I had always lived a sedentary lifestyle; but I *actually* contemplated joining if I could audition using the Lucky Star theme song and if I could teach myself the dance. I never auditioned, but the fact that I would have, and had both the song from Lucky Star & Haruhi on my MP3 player says a lot about the culture at the time.
If I watched Lucky Star now, it would probably make me nostalgic for my High School Days just because it permeated otaku culture (along with Haruhi) whether I liked it or not!
Lori P When I was 12, I dropped guitar lessons because they interfered with catching the new episodes of Yugioh, so I know the feel. As an adult though I have a healthy amount of shame over that, so maybe I like the abuse of being made fun of XD
Ah, I used to not stand stand slice of life and cutesy shows with girls doing jack all as well. I guess this was due to the assumption that nothing happens in these shows, or that the slice of life elements were boring. I could not even try to like K-On and Lucky Star at all, until my taste changed constantly and such.
Now what bothers me is assumptions in the anime community and people who don't fact check, but that's a different story for another day...

Goetz1998 I don't identify as Otaku either, mostly because I think most nerd culture is gross. I've only gotten into Kyoto Animation stuff recently because of Free! but I find that their older shows still hold up pretty well in terms of production values
Yeah I instinctively hate Lucky Star and Haruhi because of the shit storm of Moeblob/Slice of life that came after and dominated anime for several years. Tried to watch it back then, hated them, tried to watch them recently, reminded me of the 2007-2012 period of anime when many of us Otaku were going "Jesus fuck off with this Moeblob SoL bullshit already".
Hilarious because 2 of my favourite anime are Nichijou and Azumanga and really Nichijou is just a modern version of Lucky Star. Shows how context can make you love a show, but also hate a show.
The antics of Minoru Shiraishi, as well as the Karaoke were awesome ways to end each episode of Lucky Star. :)
Reference/parody joke. A good one is where it is parodied, with the intention to ridiculed the source material, and you don't even have to be familiar with the source to get why it's funny. The initial D parody in Lucky Star makes fun of the concept of street racing and how ridiculous it looks. I don't even know Initial D but the instant change in style signifies this is some tropes in some medium and Lucky Star is basically saying "see how fucking ridiculous this is?".
A bad one is a simple reference without context or intention to do anything more than "see this Master Chief helmet. Recognize this and laugh". They don't do anything with the helmet. They don't kick it around like a football (then break their toes because apparently that shit weights like 50 kilos).
Good examples of good parody are Airplanes!, and Far Cry: Blood Dragon (for a game). Examples of bad reference are the Scary Movie and Epic Movie franchise, and Duke Nukem Forever.

Lucky Star will always hold a very special place in my heart. And yes, much of that is due to the context in which I originally watched it. I think you captured a lot of that here.
And while my original experience with it was very different from yours, I did also take away a strong fondness for this little show, invoking a warm feeling every time I've rewatched it. :)

I watched these alone on a fansub site, I knew one other person who watched anime and she didn't like Lucky Star. I was totally content with the small comments section on animesubs.net (I think?) when I watched it in 2008. At the time I was also watching Haruhi and absolutely loving it. I remember I actually convinced my teacher in our reading class that reading anime subtitles and writing reviews of the episodes counted for our assignment of reading every night, good times!
I really really feel you on the emotional significance that the people who you watch it with has. It makes me want to call up old friends from high school to watch 2007-09 anime together. I almost makes me want to try and make new friends who have similar tastes in anime as me just through the internet... Maybe that's what the intent of having comments on a video like this is.

I'd say the first season of k-on is slightly one upped by lucky star, as it's so much more sure of what it wants to be and it's really clear what the shows appeal is. But then k-on season 2 happens, everything falls into place and it becomes the best show ever made :)

I actually have this on in the top 10 of my suggestion list for beginning anime nerds. When I get asked what it is I explain that it's a slice of life anime about 4 high school girls. It's cute, funny, relaxing, and honestly just straight up adorable. It's a manga and anime that you have to experience to truly appreciate it. And once they have and tell me how they loved it and ask why I love it I tell them because it shows a great depiction of friendship, and a healthy view of the otaku culture in America.

I understand how some people like it, but I could never understand how the internet practically exploded over it. It just felt like every other sitcom that we see on American television, but even more boring. I got the references, but if that's all you got going for it, the show just get duller over time like the Scary Movie series.
Lucky Star to me is something I watch when I need cheering up. I was in a bad place at the time when I first watched it. It really helped me get through it, and was such a pleasant watch. So I always associate Lucky Star with happiness.

The main points you brought up in this video kinda apply to me and Kill la Kill and why it's my personal favorite show. The first time I watched I marathon-ed all of it in one night, and I was completely wasted the next day. I almost passed out every 5 seconds. The second time I watched it was with 2 other friends, one of which was new to anime and the other had already watched Kill la Kill, so we just got to make jokes and watch our friend's reaction to all of the crazy shit that happens in the show
recently i've been hearing people talking about how bad lucky star is, and (being a person who usually very harshly criticizes most entertainment im presented with) i wondered why *i* liked it so much. i think watching this video REALLY made it clear- this is possibly one of the only times in my life where the concept of nostalgia in relation to a tv show or movie actually applied to me! thanks for talking about it with respect, man. lucky star was really a special thing for me as a kid.

i actually got into Lucky Star back in 2011-2012 ( can't remember exactly ) and i fell in love with it, i even got my best friend to watch it and i remember we used to hang out in her basement dancing along to the opening theme. even now i love re watching it and reliving memories
We're living in a time in which time runs differently for different people. Many people haven't seen the classics from around 2007 yet. Furthermore, many things Otakus enjoy today are connected to 2007. Finally, there is the factor that most fans remember living at the time.
This brings me to the fact that the context in which Lucky Star aired still is there for some people. For this reason, I would first ask what a person already saw before recommending Lucky Star.

when I first started watching lucky star (and k-on) it was right after a brutal breakup. I found the gentle inanity soothing. I made me stop thinking about my depression and instead thought of how I should eat my cream puffs. I really think it helped me escape this dark place in my life with minimal wounds.

he makes a good point here. whenever i think of naruto, i'm taken back to my friend's house where i played one of the naruto gamecube games, my friend's personality, the memories of creativity and make-believe we used to engage in, nature (he had a huge yard and naruto has lots of trees in it). ultimately i didn't even get into naruto until like nearly 10 years later and by then it's just this big collective of sentimental ideas.

I think Lucky Star was one of the first couple of anime series I watched, It had a huge popularity when it came out so I saw it probably within the year it was released. I believe I had watched Haruhi just before it, and watched Lucky Star because I heard it was in relation to it.
For someone not with a large range of otaku/anime experience or even much knowledge of Japanese culture at the time I can still say It was still a fantastic series. Even if you didn't quite get all the references, it still was enjoyable and had plenty going on in it that didn't require you to know what they were referencing. Even my mum enjoyed the couple episodes she watched with me and she hadn't watched any anime at the time. On the first level it was just cute, random fun. Which is awesome! And then later looking up the references opened me up further to anime culture. I would certainly say it caused me to become the anime fan I am today.
I reckon people watching it today who are new anime fans, will still enjoy it as even though it does reference 2007 period things, and will possibly even understand it more then I did when I watched it. I'd still recommend it if you think someone could enjoy it.

When I first watched Lucky Star, I had zero context going into it, other than some of your videos, Digi. I went in because you made it seem interesting and unique. I was hooked by episode 2. Even if the main segment got boring (which it didn't), The Lucky Channel segments were always really funny as well as Minoru Shiraishi's dance segments at the end of each episode.

Sometimes referential humor can be funny even if you don't get the reference itself, as long as it's done right. I watched this anime with 2 other friends and fortunately the guy who owned the DVD knew all of the references (since he watched it SEVERAL times over and might have looked it up just so he would knew).
I'm pretty sure said friends and I also saw Melancholy before we saw Lucky Star, as I remember some of the references made to it (Melancholy)
One of my favorite parts was the karaoke songs. I would always wait with anticipation to see if I knew the song she was singing.
