    One theory I have is that Rockstar wanted Arthur and Co. go to New Austin through Mexico after Guarma, instead of directly going to Roanoke Ridge. However this would prove too ambitous for an already delayed game so they axed Mexico and froze New Austin in time.

    The Blackwater Robbery was never, at any point, intended to be shown. The story relies on it NOT being shown, because otherwise the true nature of Dutch would be obvious to everyone. There's no way to recover the trust of players who actually see Dutch murder an innocent mother, which is exactly why we follow the footsteps of Arthur and only ever "hear" about it. Chapter 1, on the other hand, was going to be much longer originally, but it was always set in the Grizzlies. We know this for definitive fact because of interviews post-release.
    To add, the Grizzlies actually weren't that much bigger. Most of what was there before still remains, for both West and East. What was actually lost to the map changes was Cumberland Forest, and the top side of Roanoke, which nearly all of both was cut. Which is honestly unfortunate, because keeping the Grizzlies East on the northern side of the map would've helped with the illusion of 5 States.

    • @musicalhistory4392
      @musicalhistory4392 Год назад +20

      The Grizzlies were planned to be a much larger area with a habitable town, that's why Tempest Rim is inaccessible in the final game despite being on the map.

      @watermelon5159 Год назад +1

      @@musicalhistory4392 Not really. Grizzlies West was significantly smaller while Grizzlies East seems to have only lost some of its edges, but for the most part most of it seems to exist still. Where are you getting the town info though?

    • @simonrockstream
      @simonrockstream Год назад +27

      No town was planned. It was Colters original location that was placed at Tempest Rim. Tempest Rim would be the tutorial/chapter 1 area, Adlers ranch was also moved around and actually still has old paths leading towards the Tempest Rim mountains. You can find pathways leading all around the Tempest mountains, probably leading to hunting areas with Charles, to the train, Adlers ranch etc etc. Before they were all moved to different locations. No the pathways lead nowhere. The whole Tempest mountain seems like it was moved to a different location. A lot of things seem to be moved around in the Grizlies to optimise the flow of chapter 1, it's why the Grizlies are so restricted. They butchered and moved around the locations so much that they had to restrict most of it in free roam. Lack of time as usual is the reason its left so baren and unused.@@musicalhistory4392

    -They were in fact several versions of Guarma in development. There were multiple map concepts found; ones ranging from a small island to the one we got which is around the size of 2 New Austins. And there was supposed to be a little island off the coast of Guarma too which explains the one you pointed to.
    -There MIGHT have been a scrapped prologue originally, but I don't think it would've exceeded drafting stages. The 2016 leaked map even shows that Colter was always set as the intro area. And there hasn't been any strings or evidence in the files of a Blackwater opening. I think it's more likely that the Grizzlies chapter itself was longer. We know there was originally some more to it like Arthur's family, Isaac freezing to death and Eliza running away in grief.
    -I won't say RDR2's New Austin being built off RDR1's is entirely false. Sure, it wasn't just lifted from the original and upscaled, but a lot of textures and an inaccessible interiors were reused from the first game according to dataminers. Probably because they added it in last minute, like you said. Same with Mexico.

    The fact that they basically modeled the entirety of Mexico from the first game raises a major question. Did Rockstar just rip the map from the first game, put it in the improved RAGE engine, and model the rest of the map on top of it? If not, why did they feel obligated to remake Mexico, with the soundtrack from rdr1, but not make it accessible? Makes me sad that they didn't do anything with Mexico, or New Austin in general. Would've been cool to see some shit going down in Mexico during Arthur's story.

    It actually makes sense for Arthur to be locked out of New Austin as he says that the whole gang was pushed from the West, what supports this is Sheriff Sam Freeman has lines calling out Arthur when he sees him, clearly stating that the Van der Linde gang gained so much notoriety that all the western states got word of their escapades while they’re still relatively unknown in the east of the country.
    Still, I think including New Austin and making it only accessible for John makes it a good end-game reward for longtime fans of the game to have a little throwback, and seeing all the towns being familiar but vastly different, with Armadillo being nearly dead and Tumbleweed being full of noise and bustle.

    I just wanna mention this, but on the map you can find random out of place areas which have the text “Wanted Dead or Alive” labeled onto them; specifically under the “R” in Grizzlies East & on the East bank of the Lannahechee adjacent to Van Horn. If you compare the leaked maps from 2016-17 to the final in-game map, these spots where this text is shown roughly correspond to the old locations of Fort Wallace & Sisika, which is the reason why hovering over Ft. Wallace & Sisika themselves doesn’t show that text.
    This next bit is just hearsay I’ve heard from a guy I watch, but apparently there’s a sign underneath the map from a pre-release (2016; maybe 17) of RDR2 that indicates where Ft. Wallace & other places were at some point
    It’s actually really interesting how there are so many holdovers from the 2016-17 versions of RDR2

    I think it makes sense, that New Austin and Mexico were added late, and not meant to be in the game originally. Based on the original map leak but also story-wise since they never visit these places in the story and it would kinda break with the first game. I don't think they would add this because of players' outcry. Makes more sense to me to add this due to Red Dead Online and let players revisit their favorite places. This would be why it is stuck in time since online takes place in 1898 (?). Then they just decided to let players visit there in the epilogue as well since they already had the content. They probably wanted to let us do more but due to time, we got this empty version, which just added more questions. This would explain why there is audio for Arthur since they wanted this area to be available but locked it off due to the place being stuck in time and there was no point in making 2 versions of the place since no story takes place there. New Austin overall gives off this unfinished vibe and I kinda wish they would just have not bothered.
    I wonder if Mexico ever was meant to be explored or if the idea was to have the Mexican army stop you, kind of like in other rockstar titles where they block you off with police if you try and access certain areas too early. On the other hand, if I'm not misremembering there were fast travel references to cities in Mexico so perhaps this went through multiple iterations. Maybe the last idea was to just have it blocked off by the Mexican army but not even that did they have time for. Having a Mexico DLC for online maybe? But then they removed most of the references to Mexico which could mean that they killed off these plans. So many questions. Would love it if a dev just gave it to us so we could stop wondering.
    I don't know. Just ramblings. I think they should have spent more time in these areas or just cut them out. Mexico for online would have been cool. Overall, the whole New Austin area makes me depressed and it feels disrespectful to the first title.

      New Austin shouldn't have been in the game.
      it only serves as nostalgia for the players that have played the first game but it also makes no sense whatsoever because John mentions he has never been to New Austin before to Bonnie.
      anyways.
      what would have been more logical to do is to have an actual living town in Ambarino, in the snow.
      and I already have a plan. maybe Colter in the epilogue should have been repopulated with NPCs and basically have a saloon, gunsmith, general store, etc.
      once you reach the epilogue and finish the story with John, the game feels so damn empty of life and nothing interesting to do. especially in New Austin and Ambarino.
      even the Indian Wapiti Reservation is gone. Ambarino is basically empty. only wildlife.
      so yeah. Ambarino should have been much better developed with at least a living town.
      and don't have New Austin in the game. it was completely unnecessary and probably only in the game because Rockstar wanted to use it for RDR Online but also decided to include it in the singleplayer mode.

    Rockstar's ambitious Projects...
    Guarma?
    Look at the size!!!!
    What were they thinking!??
    They could've focused on the main map more than Guarma and scrapped guarma, or saved it for like GTA6 or something...
    Imagine how big the main map could've been...
    Northern native lands and southern mexico lands, we could've had all that had they not spent time doing the guarma stuff.
    Which they then abandoned and only use for one short chapter...
    I say it was a terrible use of developer time and effort.
    But devs probably learned a lot and are now making GTA6 which is all tropical.
    Can't wait.

    I don't mind that Arthur isn't able to go to New Austin, narratively there really isn't a reason to despite much of the gang's desire to flee west. I feel like that want is sort of a commentary in and of itself, how outlaws were able to better thrive westward whilst Dutch keeps everyone landlocked in the wrong areas.
    The problem here is where cynicism drips through. New Austin in RDR2 is left relatively unfinished in spite of some available side-content for John, sure, but its real purpose? To be repurposed and milked for content in Red Dead Online, which also takes place in 1899. There's many more nods to the future of RDR1 nestled there than even in the story. Which makes Rockstar essentially abandoning it all the more ironic.

They have all of New Austin and Mexico, hell even Guarma, to play with as DLC and RDO missions. Add an official Undead mode too, that footage you had looked pretty fun. They could totally revive RDO by doing that. Single player DLC's aren't dead either.

    Why is Guarma loaded onto the same 'map' as the rest of the game? You only ever access it via a cutscene which could have disguised loading of a new map, so there must be some technical reason why they load Guarma at the same time, any ideas what that would be?

    • @BonnieFan69
      @BonnieFan69  Месяц назад +1

      they did the same thing with north yankton in gta v. i wont pretend to know anything about development with the rage engine but honestly they probably just figure its easier than creating and loading an entire new map. also if red dead 2's starting load times are anything to go by, id imagine it would take a lot longer to load between guarma and the main map if they had done them seperate

The epilogue is really pushing it. I was overjoyed when I discovered the Red Dead 1 map was in the game and I think it serves as just icing on the overall experience. The true tragedy of the unused content is Guarma, not New Austin.
