It’s great how you decided to upgrade and keep an engine that is meaningful to you. It’s easier to sell it and get something newer but the route you went is much more rewarding
Great story Sid on how you picked up that Big Boy and the upgrades you did over the years. Engines like those don't need fancy bells or whistles, they just need to hold all the awesome memories you experienced with them.
Great job, Sid! Your upgrades have added so much to an already awesome engine. You really are a skilled engineer! No wonder other modelers look to you to do upgrades and repairs so often. The chuff and smoke and the whistle are spot on for dramatic effect!
Hey, man! I’m with you that the Big Boy can be a live changer. Say, I first was fascinated by the Big Boy when I was 9-10 in the early 2000’s. I saw the O scale Big Boy on I Love Toy Trains and I got the Pentrex Big Boy Collection DVD for my 11th Birthday. I even got joy from simulating Big Boys on Microsoft Train Simulator and the 4006 on Trainz. I graduated high school in 2012 and the next year didn’t go well for me. I had a rough year my lone year in college and didn’t know where to go. I got it figured out and by late 2013, early 2014, I was excited a Big Boy was being restored. After that, life kind of went downhill again and stayed there for a while. By 2019, I had enough and was trying to get my life back on track again after the last couple of years prior were so rough for me. When I saw the Big Boy run the inaugural excursion for the Golden Spike, I was so thrilled. I had just turned 25 and felt like a kid again! Everything was going back up for me after that. It got better when I actually got to see the Big Boy live in person with my best friend in Rochelle that summer. Those were the best 2 days of my life and I will never forget them. I grew up wanting to see one at a museum and I never thought I would even see the 4014 under steam in person, but that is the lone Big Boy I have seen. The one under steam. Despite my annoyance of the pandemic, the Big Boy was there again for me when it ran last summer after the previous year’s cancellation. I had just moved to a new home and life was slowly getting back to how we knew it.
I have that first generation Big Boy myself. I bought it brand new back in 1999, and I still LOVE it to this day. I just wish it had the Odyssey speed control. I really love yours, as well as the 4 chuffs per revolution . Yours looks, runs, and sounds so incredible with those things. When I got my Big Boy, bought the auxiliary yellow water tender that went with it as well so I could run them together as a lash up. The whistle to me is incredible.
Great video! Oh wow, always thought that engine was a small semi scale engine. Now I want it, I have a big soft spot for less-detailed older Scale engines. Nice to hear your story with the engine too. Very similar to my story with My JLC Big Boy. Things were pretty rough for me in school, only had one engine at the time (Conventional scale Daylight). One day, my parents graciously purchased a used JLC Big Boy from my local hobby store as a gift. It completely blew me away! It’s nice to hear a special story like yours in the hobby.
I want one so bad but I got a UP Challenger from 1996 on Christmas it’s not a big boy but to me it’s the next best thing and I never want to get rid of it
I know what you're saying about today's standards I have the A class and full scale J (606) from the era and they don't even have chuff on smoke units , I had trained America studios install their smoke units into both to get that feature and it's not like they weren't big money at the time
I own the same loco. I feel like it is VERY detailed and a great loco. Why the difference of opinion???? I grew up having O3r in the 1960's. I had a few diesels and starter steam locos like 4-4-2 with really ZERO detail. So the early Big Boy is a marvel to those of us that had starter set steam locos!!! Thanks! PS Glad you like and kept it!!!!!!!
Is it still TMCC?I used legacy for the first time and don't see much difference.maybe I don't know enough about the features.I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject.great video
It is still a tmcc engine. The main difference between legacy and Tmcc is the speed control and updated sounds of legacy's with the quillable whistle and crew talk.
@@SidsTrains thanks I didn't notice much difference.i run a legacy J1a with TMCC and used my grandsons legacy control at his layout.old stuff for old guy 😂
Hey Sid, I have the exact same #4006 Big Boy as you. I bought the ERR Cruise Commander “M” for mine as well. I attached the 2 easy plugs, but ran into a snag with the “Serial” wire to the R2LC. I called up Roy at Royz Trains and he said I had to solder that J4 #1 wire to that first pin underneath the Motherboard. The #2 wire I was told to leave alone unconnected. I soldered that #1 wire on, put the body back together again, put it on the track, and the locomotive took off like a rocket. There was no control. Is that serial wire supposed to be soldered to the front pin, or the pin behind it? Is it supposed be soldered to a different location. Do you have any pictures of your Big Boy with the body off showing the location of your solder joint? If you could help me out with anything, I’d appreciate it. Thanks, Tom
Hey Sid. When adding a Super Chuffer, is there much modification you need to do to install this? I’m thinking about doing this to my same Big Boy like you have here.
Sid do you think you can help me locate a Cab top for My Visionline Genset no .2701 and 2 screw on Red Wheels that go to the Bigboy ,l would definitely pay if you could find 1 or both l would pay you for your time as Well ,Thank you 😉 Happy Railroading 😊
Got very Lucky ,l went too a Garage Sale and Found a Bigboy and Metal Union Pacific Genset that l also need the Cab top for it and 2 Red Wheels that go on the Side of Bigboy And Got Both for 200.00 dollars lady just wanted Stuff gone So that was the Best Day of My Life and if you can locate these items for me ,I will Definitely pay for the Stuff and l would greatly appreciate 😀 it thank you Sid
I just bought my first Big Boy at my first train show last Saturday. Best choice I ever made
It’s great how you decided to upgrade and keep an engine that is meaningful to you. It’s easier to sell it and get something newer but the route you went is much more rewarding
Sid what a gift you have. Awesome
Whoa! That thing is massive! How can you even fit that anywhere?? So big and long and with such power! All aboard!!
Great story Sid on how you picked up that Big Boy and the upgrades you did over the years. Engines like those don't need fancy bells or whistles, they just need to hold all the awesome memories you experienced with them.
Awesome video you did an outstanding job on the bigboy God bless you and your family
I love the big boy, I had my tmcc and my grandpas Williams model for years! Great video sid keep it up!
Great job on the upgrades Sid!
A very nice locomotive!
Congratulations Sid! Great job with the upgrades. I also remember only being able to dream about owning a Big Boy. Well Done!
Thanks Jason!!
You have amazing skills and talent and that is a beautiful updated engine
If I'm not mistaken, the 4000 class that had "Big Boy" written on the front was #4005.
Awesome big boy
Great job, Sid! Your upgrades have added so much to an already awesome engine. You really are a skilled engineer! No wonder other modelers look to you to do upgrades and repairs so often. The chuff and smoke and the whistle are spot on for dramatic effect!
Well done Sid. Fine sounding engine.

That pin should go to pin 24 on the R2LC. When looking at the r2lc from the top with the pins close to you, it goes to the top left pin.
