I'll say it...I don't think any artist should care about fan input. They should be free to do what they do within the structure of the larger narrative or setting, and worry about the reception after. Because as a fan, I sometimes don't know what I want until after I have tried it.
For instance, if you had asked me 10 years ago if I wanted to see a teenage Jedi in training make friends with space whales, I would have laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed and then laughed at least three more times after that.
And now, after having seen it, I think Rebels is amazing.
And as for being a documentarian, yeah, it's difficult to put faith in her abilities there, but on the other hand, Spike Jonze was a music video director who went on to make award winning movies. Just saying, she deserves her shot.

I am of the opinion, that true artists don't change what they create based on the opinions of others. There seems to be a major disconnect between studios and the fans. It says so much that someone within the production machine says 'forget the fans.' (Has no one looked at the numbers for Aquaman 2 where the same was said?) The other major issue is the writing. At this point, I just want a clean slate. Just restore everything back to 2015 where we only had the Lucas movies and the Clone Wars and then go from there. Hire someone with a long term vision of where they want the story to go. Leave the one-offs to novels and comics. Don't pull from Legends and don't nostalgia bait.
Until that happens, I'm just going to keep re-experiencing Legends to get my Star Wars fix.

The Rey movie will work if Jon and especially Dave are very involved in the story creation. My problem was never with Daisy but with the bad writing and directing. I'll give it a chance should it come to fruition. My biggest complaint is the fact that episode I was supposed to be end of the Skywalker saga, yet Rey took that name and now there will be more films. So apparently it was clearly not the end. So despite there now being multiple galaxies in Star Wars canon, they still can't come up with original movies. Go use Legends storylines that the fandom already likes, if you are desperate.
All I know is Dave should be the one picking the stories and directors, rather than KK.

Sounds like they are adding all the same ingredients that left me with a horrible taste in my mouth previously..
I understand Disney making some mistakes but at this point, there has been a lot of discussion about where fans feel the franchise has let them down. Most of it is unhelpful hate, but plenty of well-thought-out criticism. There seems little excuse to continue to throw in the same deaf-eared people at the project.. and F*&K JJ Abrams, he's only good at making pretty explosions.

I'm in the minority but I think continuing Rey's story has to happen. Going forward with the story is uncharted territory. They've gone backwards with the High Republic and people complained about that. My kids want to see Rey, Finn, & Poe. This was there introduction to the franchise. I had my introduction with A New Hope in the mid to late 90s because George Lucas came out with those special edition VHS tapes. Then I got more with Episode 1 when I was around 12... people complained about that. I don't think you can stop the complaints so move forward and let the chips fall where they made. You cannot function off of fear of backlash... it's going to come regardless. 💯

Why is anybody surprised that “Rey is the heart of Star Wars”? She has been for Kathleen Kennedy since day one. I know a lot of people just eye-roll when I suggest that there is an agenda with Star Wars, and that the agenda is a modern feminist man-hating one meant to prop up women (which is fine in and of itself, the problem is HOW they do it). Rey PALPATINE is their feminist ideal. Beautiful, powerful, morally pure without any trace of where all that perfection comes from (because it comes from within!) They introduced the character, gave her no real or flushed out back story, handed her abilities she didn’t earn and knowledge she never acquired to (hopefully from their perspective) replace the icon that is Luke Skywalker, with their idealized female version. This is why Luke had to be character assassinated in the Last Jedi as did Han (isn’t it great that he’s a dead-beat dad though they didn’t show or even tell us in what way? Nope. He just is because of course he is). Notice the male hero’s were downgraded and Leia was massively upgraded. Wasn’t it enough that our beloved princess was integral to the rebellion, braved personal risk and hardship to fight against tyranny; all WITHOUT the benefit of force abilities. Nope. She’s a Force master now, too. Screw her being a brilliant strategist, an inspiring leader with an indomitable spirit that even torture couldn’t break, all on her own without having to rely on anything but her own wits and grit. Nope. She gets the Force upgrade. We’ll even show a brief scene of HER training with Luke; just deliberately show, of all things they could possibly show, her beating Luke. Because of course. Why would you show anything else? So, I know there are some who would claim I’m sexist or a bigot for coming to these conclusions. But, I’m just telling you what I see. Just simply look at what you’ve been being shown. Sometimes it’s subtle and easy to dismiss, but it’s there. It’s everywhere in Star Wars now (except Andor. That show is actually about Star Wars. I can’t figure out why Kathleen okayed it). Anyway, again I say, nobody who has actually paying attention should be surprised. This is what Star Wars is about. Here’s proof: Mae will be redeemed. By the end they will want you to be sympathetic to her, just as they did with Reva. It’s ridiculously predictable.

There's about 3 films, 2 shows, and 1 video game that are canon to the story of Star Wars that I criticized about, but I make lemonade out them.
'Attack of the Clones' fits more better as an opening for the Star Wars 'The Clone Wars' animated show.
'The Book of Boba Fett' would be better watched during the 'The Mandalorian', cause 'TBOBF' takes place whenever the events in flashback sequences take place while during 'The Mandalorian' story.
Starting with watching 'Andor' season one first brings a serious tone before getting into an almost light-hearted tone you watch later in Star Wars 'Rebels' and then watching 'Andor' season two will bring you to one of my favorite Star Wars films 'Rogue One' which then leads into Original Trilogy and so on so forth.😄✨️💕

Hopefully it would be a new age, not just another empire that's risen from the ashes. ....... Some day I hope there'll be a movie set in the remote future. Maybe Coruscant could be reclaimed by nature (a la Life Without People on The History Channel), and the galactic capital is elsewhere, or the system of government has changed so much there is no longer a capital. The Jedi could still be around, but they've evolved. The era of the Skywalkers is now an ancient legend like our Greek myths (or even Gilgamesh).

If Star Wars was truly objective and solely wanted to make a good movie, then they posted a job opening for a Rey movie director online… Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy would not make it into the top 100 best potential candidates. She is a self proclaimed feminist activist that “likes to make men uncomfortable”(her words), did not go to film school, never directed a large budget mainstream film, and her experience is in making documentaries. I’m sure she has great talent for that genre, but If you were in charge, would you confidently give her $200M+ to make a Sci-Fi movie for a predominantly male audience? Does this seem like a smart way to unite a divided fandom? Does it seem like the priority is to tell a quality Star Wars story? Does it even make basic business sense? Or… will it simply justify the criticisms that Star Wars is being used as a delivery mechanism to further activist messaging?

  • @apeman505

I think the best idea going forward for Lucasfilm would be to release the Mandalorian movie first, regain the audience's trust, take note of what audiences responded to, and proceed from there. They need to take their time, hire a GOOD team of writers, and only proceed when they have a clear vision. Do NOT let KK or any other higher-ups screw with the script. And above all, avoid reshoots.
I think they are pushing for the Rey movie to get made as soon as possible while Daisy Ridley is still young. (And also Rey is Kathleen Kennedy's self-insert character....) I think they want to resolve Rey's story before they make any movies taking place after Episode 9.
As with all Star Wars projects, I really want it to succeed, but ... good grief, you know what's going to happen. They're going to make a big show about hiring "diverse" writers and actors, and then not put any effort into the story. They will fire a director or two, push the release date back because of reshoots, etc, etc, etc. Then when people hate it, they'll attack the fanbase and call us bigots and cancel the next project.
I really would like a Rey movie that makes her character likable, relatable, and interesting, but I don't think they're able to do that unfortunately.

It's a good morning from you and it's a good morning from the broken, cantankerous, belligerent, obnoxious, obstinate, obstreperous, cynical Old Fart.

I think Daisy is great and very likable and I have enjoyed her other movies. I believe she would have been bankable in 10, 11 & 12 if 7, 8 & 9 were any good. Disney & Lucasfilm are in dire need of real leadership that makes a product that the customers really want. They should put quality first. I really want so much to love Star Wars again.

I won’t be going to the cinema to watch a Rey movie. IMO they shouldn’t have killed off Kylo. I would have watched a fun Star Wars movie led by a kick ass power couple. But alas…
