  • Here's my jazzy version of 'Jingle Bells' on the vibraphone.
After about an hour, I finally completed a take that I was satisfied with. As you can see in the bloopers, I was getting quite frustrated. Nevertheless, the video turned out pretty well. I used a karaoke backtrack from Michael Buble's 'Jingle Bells' as the backing track in my video. Here's the link to it:

awesome :) Getting in the Christmas spirit! I also enjoyed seeing the bloopers - when you see an awesome song being played, it's easy to put performers on a pedestal and say "I'll never be able to play that well!" but seeing the side that makes mistakes, makes it easier to imagine that that performer stood where you are right now (mistakes and all) and if they got through all the blooper bits to play it so well, that maybe one day you could get past the blooper stage too!

I must've done at least 30 takes on that solo. I hadn't planned anything out, so each time I played it I had to improvise a lot. After 20+ takes I was getting really desperate, making it even harder to improvise. I thought it might be cool to put some of my blunders in the video. As a wise man once said: "I've learned a lot from my mistakes. I think I'll go make a few more."

How did you get so good at jazz Vibraphone? Is it because you understand a lot about music theory or is it just practice? Please teach me I'm an aspiring Vibraphonist who just wants to be decent at the Jazz Vibes.

Yeah, it's really all about the theory. If you have a good understanding of chords and their relationships, you will have a solid foundation for improvisation. I have been playing the piano by ear since I was four (a total of 12 years), so improvisation came somewhat naturally to me. If you want to get good fast, I would start by memorizing all major, minor, diminished, and major 7th chords. Play them as scales, arpeggios, and four-mallet chords. If you need material to play off, I'm sure you can find some online. I play for 15-30 minutes a day solely working on theory. Once you've done this for a while, go buy yourself a Realbook and practice reading off chord charts. You can look for tutorials online (I might even upload some myself) for improvisation and comping, but for now just work on building a solid foundation in theory. Good luck!

This is completely improvisation. I wrote it out after several people asked for the sheet music. :)
