Old air compressors are like ticking time bombs - you never know when they will go off. It's not a good idea to have a bomb near you... that's why you never repair an airframe older than 10 years. safety first!

When an air tank has been welded, it can have a weak spot from a poor repair, or it might be thin from rust, and maybe explode because it should have been scrapped, and a better tank purchased. You may be gambling with your own life, and that of friends and family.
The extreme heat from welding makes the metal brittle and subject to failure. When the tanks are manufactured, they're heat treated after welding to normalize the metal and make them strong. You never weld on a pressure vessel after that or you risk your life, or the lives of whoever you give these tanks to. There's also the rot on the inside of the tank that you can't see without a boroscope, and potential stress cracks.
Using filler and repainting old pressure tanks to look like new should be a crime, because it's a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.
Just buy a new pressure tank, it's cheap insurance.
