Well it's based on the original novel, in which Anita (originally only known as Mrs. Dearly) has no defined job title. It's only known that she was incredibly good with finances which implied she was somewhere in that field. In the original she neither known to be a designer nor known to be a reporter though.
In the animated film, it was never established what her job was but in the live-action film, she was a designer. I think they changed her to whatever was going on with Cruella because there had to be a connection between them when it came to the dalmatian puppies. Plus there was also the time period when the story takes place.
Based on what Anita footage we've got, I'd say she and Cruella studied fashion and then struggled to make their name in the fashion industry. We see that Estella/Cruella is not doing so good, so maybe Anita is the same and instead of finding a designer job at a big fashion label, she is a writer for a fashion magazine.
I like they are also introducing Anita into the story since Cruella's adversary in the future is going to be Anita and her husband Roger and of course the Dalmatians. With a villains story we also get the introduction of the other supporting characters who will become part of the dalmatianverse.
As a child I was a huge 101 Dalmatians fan, had stickers on the fridge and even got a cute Dalmatian dog we called Ariel. I see a lot people already complain about this movie for changing their loved childhood stories, as it happened with some other Disney remakes, I understand. But here we got the wonderful Emma Stone as Cruella, insane and funny at the same time, with costumes design by legend Jenny Beavan...I always thought the old versions lacked in the fashion department. This is amazing and does justice to the character of Cruella, I know she is evil, but I always low key loved her because she is the most stylish of all Disney characters.
I'm excited about this movie but I'm tired of Disney playing up classic villain's as heros...they aren't..let them be the villain we love, Cruella is evil not a anti hero
