What frustrates me most is this guy is very switched on, obviously intelligent, but simply through poverty he ended up a criminal. The government are talking about building *more* prisons, rather than tackle these issues at source - poverty. Its poverty to drives the vast, vast majority of crime. If this guy had been born in a more affulent area he'd have had a completely different life. Really glad he's managing to help others now though, I bet he finds it really rewarding and undoubtedly the people he helps will listen to what he says because of his lived experience.
I don't think that's entirely true. Gang related criminality is glorified as if it's a normal thing to do, which it isn't. You also don't necessarily go shooting people if you're doing criminal activities. People do this by choice. Poverty doesn't make you do crimes by definition. That is what the charity he works for is about, like he mentions in the video.
@@Jonasv20 if you have no money how are you going to support your family? yourself? doing illegal activities such as selling drugs is an easy way for people with essentially nothing to make quick cash. don't say they had government resources, if it isn't clear by now with the whole covid situation going on, the government doesn't give two shits about us. people born in low income environments not only are exposed to a lot of harmful criminal activity; even on an ecological scale they are exposed to harmful substances in their environment, so who is to say that the same doesn't apply in poverty creating criminals? (obviously nuances aside), being born in an environment like that can lead to extreme mental taxation, which leads to a life of illegal wrongdoings. and before you go saying "some people didn't commit crimes even though they were born in such circumstances" keep in mind committing a crime is as simple as jaywalking. everyone has committed a crime at some point, possibly without even knowing.
Plus you said criminality isn't normal even though it's glorified... but the white populace almost has this infatuation with living a lifestyle that these people choose in order to survive.
Sorry for the long read, I just think you're trying to ignore the truth in order to make yourself feel better, even though I don't quite know you. I'm saying this because if you look at the facts (do some research on biotoxicity, low-income statistics, really anything about people in poverty and the lives they are forced to live) I think you'll ultimately be able to agree with what I'm saying. These things are true. These people have no choice. It's "survival of the fittest." Kill or be killed. He had the choice to either starve and be broke or commit crimes in an environment where that lifestyle is normalized in order to support himself, his family, his friends, etc.
*key takeaway: it's not really a choice if you're being forced to do something as a product of your environment.*

Poverty is actually a direct instigator of crime. I know what you’re trying to say and loads more people share your perspective. If you take a dive into some sociological views on crime you’ll have your eyes opened into what causes crime. This guy and many others fall victim to capitalism. It’s the way this country and most the world works. He belonged to “the social underclass” most likely, where different morals were developed and generational poverty was a factor. Think about the uneven playing field in this scenario-
A child born to middle class parents with middle class morals, jobs, values, etiquettes etc. This kid went to private school around kids just like him and provided with the best education. The norm was to be educated and so on. It’s rare this individual would get involved in crime or even be able to relate to those that are.
Then there’s the complete opposite where a kid is born into poverty, lacks education and the norm is crime. This kid doesn’t see the world the same, his role models and heroes in the area are the cool kids ( the drug dealers and gang members who made money through crime) and this was what it was like in Moss side Manchester in the 90s. It’s almost inevitable that this person will grow up and feel somewhat comfortable with crime but obviously most won’t be attempting murder or anything as grievous as that.
There’s so many more factors you can dive extremely deep into how and why poverty causes crime both directly and indirectly but I can assure you it does play a significant part.

But do you honestly think a 13 year old kid is going to provide for his family? His parents were even kept in the dark according to what he says. It's all about seeing people having the gang lifestyle, having fancy stuff and what not. So yes, it is glorified. In rap, reputation, etc. If it's all about kill or be killed, then why is it only something gangs (who supposedly have money) do to each other and their victims. Why is it not the average poor person in the streets shooting at eachother, and is it rather a minority within the group of poor people? Telling poverty is the sole cause of this is nonsense. You can argue it's the socio-economic situation that lays the foundations for this, but in the end this kind of criminal behaviour keeps these people poor as well. So why are they poor? So is it really all about the money? Do you think that if the government just handed out tons of money to gang members, that it would be invested in their future and stop them from resorting to crime? There's so much more going on here that needs to be addressed. And yes, you are a product of your environment. But an environment is much more than the abundance or absence of money. This is a societal problem that can't be entirely blamed on the people themselves, but they do have a say in it. So it is their choice. If you lose your money and end up in the streets, are you going to accept the opportunity to be rich if you shoot someone?
Such a strong, smart guy. Must’ve been so hard to have had those experiences, the anxiety & suspicious mentality. @@S4L665-OnelessthantheDevil Not really, i grew up in Manchester in an area with a lot of gangs and a lot of those people are still living in the area with the same mindset 20 years later. So yeah he changed his mindset and is doing better for himself now.

I am so grateful that he was able to change the course of his life and find peace in raising awarness to younger generations. The part where he mentionned how police officers just saw them as perpetuators when in fact they are victims stuck with me.
That happens a lot a police just hear a surname and that’s it ,all they can say is :there are gangs ,or foreign ,or terrorists I don’t think they go deep enough to understand the why?
I feel him when he talked about feeling older than he was. You grow up so quick and go through so much you feel like you've lived a lot more than your age.

The part when he says he couldn't bring himself to say he loved his nan before she died, i had a similar realisation at 13 after my mum passed. That whole thing of teenagers being mopey with their parents or being embarrassed to say I love you went out the window for me, I would hug my dad and tell him I loved him every time I left the house after that for years until he passed.. even if I was upstairs and he shouted up to let me know he was off out, id stop what i was doing and come down to give him a hug because you never know when it'll be the last time.
Such a pure real life outlook on how life really is and once you make mistakes as a "young adult" to turn your life around and someone let you get your foot in the door to give you a chance to change your life is real! Well done for turning your life around. Hat off to you, well done, you and your family should be proud of you.

I have a parallel story of being homeless and a criminal at 14 and facing 20 years for attempted murder at 18. I'm not traumatized by it, but my biggest issue is that children are used at a higher rate than anyone will admit. It's the worst problem in the world.

I agree! They should have just took the gun off of him, slapped his bare buttocks, told him he was a naughty boy and told to not do it again. How savage of the system sending him to prison for trying to murder 2 men. Its ruined his 20's.

No different from each decade. Dick heads everywhere and always has been. More choice and opportunity in a lot of areas more then there’s ever been despite what rhetoric gets thrown around. Plenty who have grown up in tough conditions and chose not to be dickheads. Put it this way, I was born in a half decent area in London, not the best but my parents divorced when I was 10. I have a younger brother. My dad brought us up as my mum walked out. He bought a house in a good area. My school I went to had good kids from half decent backgrounds and some were very poor. We had sky as a kid, home cooked meals, and plenty of Christmas presents when many others didn't. As my dad was out working so much I wouldn't spend a lot of time with my nan and grandad. They lived on a council estate that was riddled with crime, drugs, car theft, and loads of addicts around. At school I caught onto boys that would be the class clown and those who smoked weed and they would all listen to hip hop and gangster rap. As I got to 13 I had a step mum who hated my arse and my little brother to. I would go out till stupid hours, smoking weed, selling it and doing all sorts of madness. I got beaten up many times, robbed many times but always kept a good heart. My dad wanted to move abroad to start a better life for us so we did. Over there, I was the bad boy as many people over there saw londoners as bad boys who many wanted in their side. So i made many friends, girls liked me and i loved it cos i never got that attention cos i wasnt really a bad boy in school but wanted to be apart of it. I didnt do my gcse's not cos i fail or didnt want to, you just finished school at 18 there so they didnt take place as i retuned to london at 16 from 14. I would wake up, put some Tupac on and smoke a spliff before going to college and stuff like that. One day I took my step mum's car and drove it while they were on holiday at age 16. They returned home after their holiday and friend saw me driving it. They grassed me up. I went round the house, apologised to my dad and my step mum went nuts. Attacked me and I smashed the fuck out her car. I was then arrested and almost went to prison. The judge gave me heavy bail conditions and since that day, my dad had to lie to her to see me, and it's my own fault. All the times he told me to do concentrate in school I never listened. Now I wish I did. Now in 31, I have a business, but struggle all the time financially. I have kids and always reminding them how important school can be. All the weed I smoked the trouble I got into has now stopped, BUT I just cannot shake the persona off, I'm not a bad person and would help anyone who needed it, but it doesn't matter the background poor or rich, its the influences around you, you get sucked into it your on a downward spiral believe me! The things I've seem happen, stabbings, robberies the lot and I used to think it'll make me tougher and smarter. All its done is trap me, it's hard to think outside the box, working hard is one thing but Smart is another. We had a nice house, but when your young you never understand how appreciate it. Now my kids are going to their friends houses with mortgages some are amazing, and because I was stupid I can't provide them with that same lifestyle, so my arrogant choices as a teen led to this. I am happy, never been a quitter and I work my arse off to ensure they have as much as possible. The influences around you is what you take the wrong path. We ALL need to educate the young generation of these dangers otherwise things will never change. To all those who have changed get their lives and are now successful, we'll done!! First time I’ve ever heard of someone on I.P.P getting released by the recommended time. Met lots of guys who had 2 3 5 year I.P.P and 8 years more than what recommended still in prison even though they had been following what they had been told etc. it’s good this guy turned his life around it shows the road life is short lived with no loyalty or future.
My tariff was 2y 6m I got my remand time bk done 18mth at forest Bank then I went to garth for my first stage I was given a sentence plan to complete before my parole which was only 9 month away wasn't gonna happen because the system was flooded with ipp🤣🤣🤣 I served 9 months 2 weeks and 2 days I feel sorry for ipp prisoners my best friend also for a 9yr on ipp when he was released his father passed away in Spain he was told he wasn't allowed to go and be with his mother for the funeral they put him bk into prison as they say he was a flight risk that was Dec 2014 it is now Jan 2022 he's still inside

All societies have to have forgiveness for mistakes. No one is ever an ax con because they're constantly punished & ostracized or disrespectfully categorized as no good. This man was a child riding around with friends & people took that that simple, normal act & demonized him, sentencing him to a certain identity. He was literally doing the time before ever doing the crime. Good on him for setting himself free. That was a monumental task. I hope he and his family are safe now.
lets not sugar coat things, he wasn't a child riding around with friends he pulled a gun and tried to kill someone. It's admirable that he has seen the error of his ways and I really wish him the best in making a difference to young peoples lives

This really shows the PTSD these lives can leave you with. I’m not allowed to say much but even to this day, even tho I’m clean and everything. From the way I move, to the routes I take, to where I sit in pubs and so on. You’re mind will never fully heal. That’s shit sticks with you. That’s shit alters your whole life and can leave you in constant anxiety.

This is good testimonial evidence that a lot of crime comes from young men (or kids) with nothing better to do. Glad this guy was able to escape that but we're better off a society tryig to prevent that sort of mlieau from existing in the first place.
