I know this is old, but I think it's worth pointing out that most of her appearance in the film wasn't makeup. She actually shaved her eyebrows and gained 30 pounds. The only thing prosthetic wise that she had on was her teeth.

This is inspiring. She grew up in an abusive household and her mum eventually killed her dad in self-defence, but look how far she's come. She isn't even American, which makes it a lot harder to "make it". Such a well deserved award.

Amazing what a single person can do for their country. I remember the week after when she arrived at Cape Town International with the Oscar and was greeted by the legendary Nelson Mandela, our then president of South Africa, as she got off the plane. This is the first time an award acceptance speech makes me cry, after I learned so many things about Chalize's past, how hard she must have worked from a troubled background, speaking no english, and no systematic acting training. I thought about the very first few characters she created early in her film career, and I can see she is talented and born to be a fine actor

Also, can we just appreciate how thoughtful of Theron it was to name drop every single producer on this film, the production company, her make-up man, her leading lady, the director - absolutely everyone. Sometimes actors get so caught up in themselves and continue to thank their families and what not, but Charlize did it right. Her performance was one for the ages, but it takes a village to put that on screen. Pure class-act.

I wish that in her speech, she'd have said something about Aileen as well though instead of just listing a huge list of names. Not to give "thanks" of course, but to point out what a brutal life Aileen had and that she was honored to tell her story or something like that.

She deserved this Oscar so much. When I saw the movie Monster it was after I had seen all the documentaries about Aileen so I knew how she sounded and what she looked like. It's almost as if her spirit jumped out of the grave and took over Charlize's body to do the part. The way she could widen her eye balls where you see the white all the way around. I mean that was just amazing. I heard that in prep to play the part she had to put on 45 pounds. So she gorged on milkshakes and pizza and all kinds of yummy but terrible for you foods.....of course she has a personal trainer who helped her take it all back off again. She looked amazing on the stage.

I love Connelly's work in that movie too -- it's unforgettable. But to me, it seemed like her performance didn't really fit well in Best Actress OR Best Supporting Actress. It's strange. Her screen time in House (again, to me) seems too short to be in Best Actress... yet is maybe too long and packs too much of a punch to be in Supporting. Nonetheless, you're right. She was superb. And it would have been nice to see her nominated in one or the other.

***** I have an issue with the Academy, and it's that most times they prefer classic tradicional story telling than innovative experimental pop-culture films, they take cinema too literal (with some periodic exceptions). Sure there were great nominees for best picture, but Mad Max is an epic film and it will be remembered as one of the best films of our time.
