  • Noticed that there’s a shot where it looks like two mechs were on the same spot in the vid. Two mechs can’t share the same location, the other player just hadn’t finished their movement & was checking their card play from earlier. Sorry for any confusion!
Taking a break from the break, thanks for all your support & well wishes. Review copy provided by the publisher.

Thank you so much, it was nice to get behind the editing chair again. Feels a bit surreal too.

As someone who doesn't have the player group for Scythe because of its length and complexity, the fact that this one is a little lighter and less tense has me excited. It will get to the table more than Scythe would. (I will still get Scythe too, one day).

I love love this review. It confirms my fears I had with this game. Looks like you do two to three things in two to three ways over and over again.

He's back!! Excellent review, per usual. I typically like theme-light efficiency puzzles, so I'll probably try to get a play in and find out if the issues you had crop up for me.

Hey, it’s one-month-later Kyle here and I’ve been cranking through games on Scythe Digital Edition (which were my first-ever games of Scythe), so I have thoughts I didn’t have back when I watched the video just to hear Jack’s voice and thoughts!
So I’m in love with Scythe, but the more I play the app, the more I don’t know if it’s a game I want to pursue IRL. Sure, I’d love the tactile feel of the pieces and it’d be _way_ easier to simply glance over at a player’s board rather than jumping between menus, AND SURE I’d relish introducing the genius way the player boards shift and evolve over the game, buuuuut I just don’t know… firstly, I already have other meeples on a map titles I don’t get to play enough as it is, but more importantly Scythe seems to fall into a treacherous territory for me where the games are definitely skewed towards players who know them better. As the regular Table Nanny and Rules Lawyer of my groups, I’ve learned the hard way when to look out for those qualities in games…
Also I’m a completionist just for the sake of the completion, so Scythe is a hefty price tag were I to dive in fully.
Honestly, Scythe and Expeditions seem like completely different games enough that the connection (aside from the art and cool Mechs) is maybe more harm than good (at least to those already experienced with Scythe), so while I don’t view the two games as mutually exclusive from a mechanical standpoint, I might be more keen on this one to still get that cool setting. The wide open world of possibility also seems much more up my and my friends’ alley than set-in-place map elements…
Then again, there are always more than enough great games on our shelves that don’t get enough play as it is, so maybe (read: probably) I don’t need either… but where’s the fun in that?
Wow, here ends an episode of “Kyle writes a comment nearly as long as the review” thank you for stopping by 😂

Scythe is my all time favorite game and I loved Expeditions. I didn’t want it to be exactly like scythe so this was a breath of fresh air for me.

Excellent review. Well thought out points and nice formulated criticism. I might get the game still, but critical reviews are sometimes even more valuable than positive. And well balanced are the best :)

Was interested in this game til I saw it’s basically the same price if not more than Scythe

The abruptness of that ending made the last few words feel that more intense! 😂
Thanks for another well-thought out video, Harold.
I get the vibe that future expansions will help it out, but idk…
On one hand, I want it just for the components. On the other hand, I don’t trust the design. Stonemeijer hasn’t wowed me since Wingspan. Also, Expeditions comes across like a well polished Frankenstein of a game that wanted to be a Deck-builder but also tries to address every criticism of of Scythe:
    - not true 4X because you weren’t revealing new locations
    - solvable factions-mat combos
    - fixed faction colors
    - abrupt ending
Ultimately, I would have preferred that Expeditions be split into (2) games:
    1. a card-only deck-builder
    2. a lighter, exploration focused tile-laying game
But I’m glad he’s not done with the universe!

I’ve pre ordered this and excited for it to hopefully artive this week. But i hate games where i just feel like i’m doing busy work and having seen a couple of reviews of this they all seem to say the same thing! Let’s hope i enjoy it because it wasn’t cheap 😅 although i mainly buy stonemaier because i know the production quality will be amazing

Funny how this game is centred around what Scythe is criticised for: lack of the eXploration in 4X

Everything I’ve seen about this game has made me think “I’d rather just play Scythe.” I’m not necessarily happy that this seems to be the case (with at least you), but now I don’t feel like I’m missing anything.

It's what I thought it was going to be after seeing its reveal, Scythe but less interesting. that's a shame that it is just that.
