DMC should divide this competition into two fields. "Vinyl" and "Digital"
they do the battle for world supremecy is only vinyl and the world championship is serato
He won it using vinyl in 2007, dude. Makes no difference to him, you can dislike the sound of the routine, but you can't question his skills.
I find it the most paradoxical and hypocritical thing that scratching enthusiasts can be technofobes. You would think that someone who's artform was so strongly rejected by the rest of the music community in it's early days, would be a little more accepting of technological progress and innovation. "Technology destroyed the DJ"? Ya, well it also created it. Young people wanting to diverge from traditional trends, growing old, and then fearing further progress... it is such a predictable pattern by now. This guy did not use technology as a crutch instead of a tool to elevate the art form, his performance was sick!!
It's not the technology, it's the fact that most of this routine is pre-recorded and "chase juggled" all the way through. Basically it's a push play routine with some scratches thrown in.
Tears Hears For Years, Hells Yeah
Just look at the dmc 2001 performances in comparison to this. Using the technology to elevate the art is by making the turntables into musical instruments that create a new song. This guy just played over different songs.
I agree and disagree. His set was set wasn’t the best. But I love technology and I’m sick of ‘old heads’ who are so stubborn. I saw two friends rocking serato One cutting up beats and the other cuttting vocals and changing things up on the fly. Woooooow! I was sold.
Yeah agreed. The tech created it and will redefine it. People like certain skill sets it seems and dont like it when others get a great performance with a little less difficulty (at times). Embrace the change or keep watching nostalgic Craze routines. Both are great options, just enjoy the talent. And my own 2 cents is that Dj Dexta 2000, was trying to achieve modern routines but way ahead of his time. IMHO his sets are amazing, but yeah, thats my preference, nothing more..
The entire set seems pre-recorded and he's just flipping scratching between the two tables. He never even switches the tracks. How did someone who just hit play win?
Anyone out there kind of misses the old DMC'ing days? The pre-Serato days when you would actually have to flip / change the records? Back when you had to mark your cue on your records with white tape because you didn't have a computer screen to read ?
Don't get me wrong.. This video made my jaw drop...
I'm just saying... I miss the old days !
+D. Booey I miss those days too. i told someone that and I got a harsh reply
Selekta Mystique what did they say to you ?
I reminisced again.. Don't get me wrong, I think Serato is a great product. Definitely opens up new possibilities that weren't that accessible back in the old days like being able to play a custom track you just made or whatever. That was still an option back in the days, but it would cost you an arm and a leg to cut an acetate record. What Serato has done is do away with the need to go record shopping.. Flipping through crates of records, making a pile, and go listen to them all at the listening booth.. It was expensive as fuck, but I miss that experience... It's a shame this generation of DJs won't get to experience that..
Also! What Serato has also gotten rid of that I miss is the term "rare track".. Remember how back in the days, a rare track was still a thing? You'd have a copy of a sick track that is rare, so barely anyone else has it... And you almost become known as "That DJ who plays that dope track". You can find anything on the net now a days so nothing is rare.
**sigh**
@@DBooey don't worry buddy, rare tracks still exist.
They're just more rare.
(Megaupload got killed and A LOT of mid 2000s rap is now gone forever)
@@DBooey That is a good point, the rare track one, it gave DJ's a signature sound of sorts, no more IMO than Dexta 2000. And of course crate digging, sniff. What a joy to go digging with mates or alone. Tech created the DJ and tech will redefine the art. As long as we dont get Kim Kardashian winning off of a complete pre-recorded set. lol. Or would that be funny enough to be hilarious.. I honestly dont know. :)
Been out of action for a few years and I just ran thru the last 10 years DMC winners and for me this was the absolute best. Well done what an incredible talent.
Very technical... Sounds great... I would definately pay to watch him do hid thing... #respect.
Times and DMC have changed. I stopped buying DMC Championship videos in 2009. They should take the computer back out of the equation.
For you guys saying that he has limited skill and that digital dj's lack creativity. Did you see this guys scratching? Regardless of the whole midi thing, this was incredible. Great skill and creativity (James Bond theme kicked ass) I'm not the only one who thinks this, obviously the judges agreed to.
The Judges in the DMC are not DJs. One DJ and the rest are not DJs. That is why Craze won and not Akakabe back in the day. DJ Cash Money put him first place. Only DJs can judge the technical stuff. The average judge will like more what is musical rather than technical.
issam wavi You're saying Craze wasn't as technical as Akakabe?
issam wavi It sounds like you're saying DMC is less about how the music sounds and more about the technicalities behind the music.
Modern technology is good, but DMC contest should just stick to 2 turntables and a mixer, this is like cheating not having to manually take the records off and finding the cue points yourself...letting the laptop do half the work doesn't seem right.
Such a great set! It's unfortunate for anyone who doesn't understand how amazing this really is. The old school battles were dope too, but things have changed. Technology is a double edge sword and it can help or hurt a dj. However, in this case I think DJ Fly is extremely talented and has used technology to amplify his skills... Just my opinion. But I am a dj that has paid my dues and have been in the USA finals twice.
That's right!
DJFLY is one of the pioneers of new turntablism.
Of course, there are many other great pioneers out there. .
Man, really... for those are telling bad things right here... you maybe don't like the sounds, or you don't like the style, you prefer the style of DJs in 90's and 00's back in the days when DMC was spinning only in real vinyls... that's ok! BUT, you can NOT say that dude right here does not have a HUGE talent! His skills are very accurate and tight, no doubt!
There is no only one way to be a real DJ.
Would that performance have beaten QBert or Mike though? No
Pre recorded garbage..and pushing buttons...
I actually liked this it reminded me so much of c2c
For me, the routine of 2010's decade in the DMC.
I haven't watched any DMC champs for about 10 years.
I feel a bit sick. What a load of complete shit.
wow incredible
I own a Rane 62.. I use Serato for every set I do… I love Serato…That being said
I am not down with allowing Serato in the DMC Championships…
Where are the stickers all over the records? Where is the panic and rush to swap out records to get to the next track? The fear of a misplaced or jumping needle?
Watching the older Champions, they look like surgeons..laser focused
This dude looks more like he is playing at a club… Lip Syncing to the tracks, trying to hype the crowed…and not showing much skill.. at least the last DJ Izoh and Vajra used the computer aid to show even more skills on the tables….
….2013 must have been a slow year...
I completely agree!!
cool for a dance hall for people to groove to! but not a fuckin dj competition! anybody can do that shit know days! use real records to show real manipulation of a record! DMC SHOULD NEVER HAVE ALLOW THIS FAKE ASS PRE-MADE MIX SHIT! why even touch the dam turntable since you aint doin nuthin in the first place the mega mix is doin it all by itself!
i agree even that intro he put in the begginning didn't go with it
ozulu45 Serato killed the DMCs.
I just looked at the rules for DMC now with digital vinyl :
"There will be no restrictions on the DVS settings but no other devices/externals will be allowed for 2011. "
That means the vinyls can be set up to run relative…
correct me if i am wrong here… but to me that feels like you are not only pissing in the face of all the champions prior.. but shitting in their cereal as well..
I am not saying it doesn't take skill to be good using DVS, on the contrary, its just a different beast…DVS should have its place in DMC since digital is the current way of doing things, BUT I just feel DMC should split the "finals" into 2 categories, digital and analog… but instead of analog call it "classic"… and i would be more than content with the "new" DMC
Je viens de re-ecouter ca apres ton mix nouvel an 2021, ca dechire encore autant. Ca deboite. Never give up.
Dude got skills for sure....but this stuff is NOTHING like the old DMC days. Technology has killed the DJ/Turntablist.
100% agree, even though they are using vinyl as such its not true proper vinyl, I think technology has killed the real dj artform
Liam L Know what you mean, but at the end of the day it's still nothing but vinyl.
All my DJ friends all went the LapTop route and spin wack music like they do today. I still use real records and DJ old school Hip Hop. Yeah that's right I'm an old man! Yeah I still carry my crates yeah that's right I actually have to take the needle of the groove and switch records!! Yeah and I get crazy respect from people for that. :)
TheReIntegration Speaking for the young Dj-s, we are all fucked up our role models are EDM dj-s that don't do nothing but turn 2 knobs. Im grateful that my role models are the guys that started on vinyls and i want to be able to rock on vinyls BUT we must keep up with the tehnology. Dj-s like Fly are smart and they know what they need to do to go big, but still i bet he knows how to rock the vinyls the old school way with the stop watch bpm counting and everything ;)
TheReIntegration I guess you get respect because you play good music, not because you know how to mix with turntables.
PLEASE stop letting people use SERATO / TRAKTOR and laptops. Go back to where Dj's had to go crate diggin and use REAL VINYL!!!!
Where does that stop though. Do we make people stop using battle records?
He was fasting there on the beginning but once he settled in he went bonkers. This was damn clean.
My only problem with this is he spent too much time loving himself instead of the decks.. the real DJ's the best DJ's don't perform like an gymnast or actor.. they are children of the beat and live it with no ego
im astonished everytime i see this performance.
Haters !
Why when it's dj varja who whin with serato at dmc world any personn say something negative
because he from usa ? or other things ?????
Dj fly, this very same guy, won the 2008 world final as well...on vinyl only...
everyone complaining about laptops and tech seems to be forgetting they could just watch the DMC SUPREMACY BATTLES, which are vinyl only, and leave the rest of us alone to enjoy this performance...
whether you didn't like the music choice or his approach or whatever your qualm maybe, you are free to never watch the showcase battle again and tune in solely to the supremacy battles for your love of vinyl only nostalgia...
i seriously cant make it through the full routine, it's like watching bad kareoke.
back in the good old days i had to put stickers on my vinyl for cue points and have to change records on the fly.. the good old days are dead.
great! can some professional explain to me, how his mix was done? As I understand he had the same tracks playing on both channels, but he was somehow interrupting them, scratching and then managing to get this in sync?
I've been a dj and hip hop fan for 14 years. This is awesome! Serato is the future and allows dj's to progress the art higher and higher........no limitis!!
If dj's don't embrace new ideas and technologies then the art form will become stagnant and die. If dj's had dismissed the scratch when G.W Theodore invented it, where would we be today? I do understand why a lot of the comments are dissing DVS but having used Serato myself it completely opens up what is possible and although it may look easy to the uneducated..... it certainly is not.
If pioneers like Qbert, Mixmaster Mike, Jazzy Jeff, Africa Bambata etc....... are using it, what are you moaning about??
Sounds like the shit you used to do but you didn't get any better since then. Back in the day this wouldn't even get you qualified for the DMC Worlds. You should also try listening to some hip hop before next year's event.
DJ Aladdin - USA DMC Finals 89. No more questions, your honour.....
I love the negative comments. You could never, ever, ever, ever come close to this period.
Awesome!
So, since obviously record-handling skills don't matter anymore to the Disco Mix Club, does this guy win a gold-plated laptop?>
ha! good one
Amazing
Looks pre-recorded to me.
He's got skills no doubt. However this has really turned into a production competition.
:37-39 he moves the record and cuts the fader in and out yet i hear nothin from it? wth? hmmm
Sick !!!!
Fantastic!!!
sombody know the track list of this performance??
I kind of agree. So much pre-production thease days you cant even tell wtf the dj is doing, where the sounds actually come from, damn...
Definitely!
Who is better or different in your
opinion?
first he shows off... then he could not hit the timing correct... btw, digital djíng should not be part of DMC World Championchip!!!
oh.. and the camera work is ... well... booooriiing!
no crowd (until the verry end), no shot from over head´s... could be filmed in a livingroom ;)
aaand no mic to get the reaction from the crowd...
aaand i hate to get told to chear .... "make some noise for BLA BLA BLA" how about you let me chear IF I FEEL LIKE IT!!!
maaaannnnn.... i get old... this was boring
It is a fucking normal DMC video...where have you been for the past 20+ years?? start from DJ Atrak and watch all the same type filmed the same way....guess you don't know shit about the DMCs
hahahah, well said!!
i am old as fuck and true, i did not watch DMC or DJ videos often since i have kids...
but, i am a DP and well... from that point of view... this performance and video was shit!
Richard Whitaker Wasn't DJ Atrak part of Duck Sauce with Armand Van Helden??? You know that one dance song that everyone in the world knows?? "BARBRA STREISAND!!!!! WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO"?
I think im going to be a dj like dj fly because all the videos that I watch from his channels is awesome thats why im going to be a dj now and im just 10 and I will learn fast dto do dj
I'm not talking about another kind of battles. Since the beginning of the history of DMC the music selection has been very important.
I had to stop my set in my second routine as a DJ who had previously used my setup had cellotaped up the power switches on my turntables and I didn't notice until I needed to use them. Indescribably frustrating, but that's how it goes sometimes... I appreciate the love and support but it was between Fly and Ritchie Ruftone on the day. Big up Fly for winning :)
DJ Fly you're not a human. You are Unbelievable!
What is the Song at 03:10?
what is the name of the songs that mix?
To people who run DMC. Instead of posting vague facebook posts because you seemed to be insulted by some comments, take some time and actually read what people are saying. We as a turntablism community think we can do better to represent our art. I understand DMC is a business, and you choose to allow companies to influence the artform in a negative. But you have a choice to keep our art pure or not, you are responsible for it. Also instead of crying about what we say. LISTEN.
What was the last song
at 2:36 i hear scratching but he is not touching anything...its on the rocky the funky beatz sample....??
i am ashamed of what the DMC has become. this competition means nothing anymore.
+1 for the old school sound from dj s ..!!!!
Felicidades para Dj Fly, una gran rutina..
Agreed, it's pretty much a song chase for 6 mins with fast cuts and switches..
respect to you djjon1st you definitely are a dope ass DJ and a humble one at that....respect!!! very inspiring
What is the track that starts at 3:10?
What is the name of the tracks he's mixing ?????
2013 world champion
what is the name of the orchestral intro music?
How about, returning champions are not allowed to use serato, cause I doubt they will ban it all together even tho it would be nice if they did.
haha the ending says it all...............silence!
BRAVO!!!!
I don’t see why anyone should be putting this routine down. I started turntablism back in 97’ and I commend djs for keeping up with tech to enhance their sets. Straight up vinyl is inefficient and needlessly expensive. Very clean set and well done. It was definitely fly.
Times are changing and this is the result. This guy is bringing the new styles and application of new technologies to the next level. Today no one goes around with tons of records but anyone goes with a laptop. So whats the problem? If you put a Mac between u and the music, you have to be honest and say "...ok !what can I do now to make my best with this?"...and this is the result. Fly, at the moment, is the best combination between technical skills and music production ability.
what instruments use??
Any DMC World champ could have won using vinyl too - because they are excellent DJs. You still need skills before you can use the tools and technology! Before Serato, they pressed customs. Before customs, they used battle records! DJs, since the beginning, have loved technology. Most Hip Hop DJ legends & former World champs use DVS. They still come from a time where they know about vinyl - including Fly. His set might not be to your musical taste, selection wise, but that's not because of DVS.
The lyrics are from the Bboys flygirls by BomfunkMC's
and he won wawwwwwwwww
Anyone can write here names of the tracks he is mixing ?
Couldnt even bounce my head to most of this
Lots of people talking about the dead art of djing, not taping and stickering records, enter battles with no laptop and pure vinyl , no bullshit sampling station! That's what I plan to do, it's bull shit you can just produce a battle routine with all the bells and whistles in the perfect place and stand there all staunch like that, do it with originals! Fly still has skill, and not dissin any specific dj, it's just the scene these days
The best in the time!!!
The Best!
what is the name of the last song???
TOP CLASS!!!
Fly killed that routine....
beautiful
Check him on IDA 2012 in Poland.. crazy!
pretty sure it was only the end of his 2000 set that he used his own battle record... which ones were custom in 98 and 99?
I wont pretend I know much about DJing, instead I'll just ask if it's supposed to sound off-tempo so often? Basically it sounds like someone put a remix into DBGlitch and didn't change the default preset
exactly what i'm thinking!
Craze in 2000...This is a real DMC Champ.
Nothing against Craze, I obviously love his sets, but I wish Dexta took it that year, his set was not as technical, but the sound was next level. The Jimi Hendrix of Vinyl baby.. hehe. Im Australian n probably quite biased on this one. lol
How do you win, by votes, technique or what?
what's the name of remix 'Adele - Skyfall'? Please help me.
I feel like this art form is more creative when DJs are forced to work with the constraints of vinyl.
Just before this era they were getting their own battle records cut, le jad produced and worked with loads of winning or near winning routines, fly won vinyl only in 08 on a pressed routine.. the intro on this set was like the end of 08 winning routine i think.. this dude is a beast, DMC doesn't say they cant use vinyl only or direct where the DJs go with their routines.. just the way it is guess.. i reckon the funk i gone but still couldn't beat these guys in a battle..
@@uziquattro1083 Anyone know where that "London Tooooown" sample is from?
Who should have won ?
hes purty dam awesome
People were complaining about Izoh but at least Izoh backspun in his routine
what am I getting here? I'm confuse. Is this listenable? close the monitor and just play the sound and see how's party going?
juggle as you play or play as you juggle?
Fantástico !!
It's called evolution!!
Is sync enabled? :P
In terms of convenience, Serato is great. BUT, for me a good dj HAS TO HAVE that turntable and vinyl experience under his belt. Like Grandmaster Flash said at one point: "You have to earn to use Serato". Lots of kids today just buy a controller or mommy buys them a pair of cdj's and a year later they are on youtube calling themselves DJ's because they came up with a little 3 min routine. Really??? So what the fuck am I? I started in '85 learning how to mix with a cassette deck and a old ass turntable, then two different brand turntables with no pitch, then started doing odd jobs and summer jobs to finally save the money to buy a pair of 1200's and and a Numark mixer then started buying records, also spending money on dj pools...etc. Learned the art of studying those 12" single records like the palm of my hand. Intros, breakdowns, acapellas, percapellas, dub versions, instrumentals, edits, even the cover art of the records was special to me. Years later I became a respected local club DJ and my record collection was in the thousands. I was a really good DJ and I LOVED mixing live. Having that connection from the booth to the crowd was something special. Back then people actually danced, unlike most clubs today where the crowd is either having sex on the dance floor or just jumping like idiots. Then after watching my first DMC battle I got into Turntableism and I was decent, but the scratch dj movement in Puerto Rico was not like in the usa and overseas so I never competed. Anyways my point is...when I see DJ Jazzy Jef using Serato, he earned it. I don't mind seeing him with a laptop and a pair of timecoded vinyls or cd's. The same goes for Flash, Dj Premier, Roger Sanchez, Todd Terry, Kid Capri....and many other Dance music and Hiphop DJ's. Everybody is entitled to mix music and call themselves what they want but enough with the bullshit.
Jose Silva me personally I think that a "good dj" just needs to be "GOOD" to be a "good dj" i listen withmy ears not my eyes so i wont be able to start judging by brand or color scheme if what i hear is dope then hey its dope period if its wack then its wack there are so many wack djs . I bet cavemen would be pissed and bitter seeing a dude paint a train with aerosol in hours wen it would take the cavemen much longer lol

jeremy powell your ears? what a joke. so a "dj" shows up to a club with his controller and laptop, loads up his "dj" software, hits the SYNC button, starts blending tracks, doing "effects" also in SYNC mode....of course he's going to sound "good". So now he's a dj? you don''t know what you're talking about. Go home and listen to skrillex son
i was being a dumb ass lol i am sorry you had to deal with the troll that comes out in times of severe boredom ha ha ha. i had just read this quote "I don't make music for eyes. I make music for ears.".....Adele. honestly if you are just letting software do all the work I would rather just have this app be the dj www.secretdj.com/
+Jose Silva lots of kids today buy controllers because its what they were borned to and theres no problem with that. They have been seeing cdjs and controllers. You were borned in years where they used vynils. Thats why lots of kids buy controllers apart from many other reasons which i'm not going to say because they are so obvious.
Please bring back the old DMC days :'( All this digital crap just gets in the way of true skill
at the end the crowd was lik get the hell off that stage man ..gabage
Well you should check out the 3style battles.. there more about the music and song selection..
DJ Fly is The Best.
