Dunno if you already know this, but a couple of the states you can colonize in the pacific are only one tile big. So it doesn't matter that they have severe malaria, because the colonization is instant. Debatable whether those few extra pops are worth having to build ports for such small colonies, tho.
None of the Pacific island states are only one tile. The smallest are Nauru, which is 2, and Kanak, which is 3. It's absolutely worth it to get them as someone in the British market, however, as it's one more place for immigrants to swarm to.
Fish is much more efficient than grain as a food source so it's always worth it to secure coastal lands, not even accounting for other considerations that favor their colonization
You don't need to build a port. You're connected to the market via ports in mainland Australia, which you're connected to via strait. Emergency Relief and Promote National Values are basically pointless in your situation, so you might as well just keep the Authority to make your law enactment faster. Dedicated Police is also completely pointless for you at the beginning, you'd be better off going for one of the Colonial laws and hoping that you can get the Prestige outcome from Law Advancement so that you can get a Declared Interest and start setting up in Niger Delta, a single province of which has FAR more population than what you started with.
For countries this small, dedicated police is just a bonus at no real cost. With 100 starting bureaucracy, the 10 that institutions cost is trivial. it may not be optimal to get first, but it is certainly useful and efficient.
@@TheBlueScreeners No, it can happen on any law afaict. It's just that you can most rapidly take advantage of it if you get the colonial law first, since the declared interest will let you start colonizing Africa.
@@brandonzzz9924 It's not really any benefit at all since such a small country is basically impossible to get turmoil in. That bureaucracy could be used to make some trade routes instead to bring in some money.
awesome video! just grabbed this game and am completely struggling to get my economy up and running, this kind of long-format content is greatly appreciated albeit a little too fast sometimes hehe keep up the great work!
Tasmania is an OP start with regards to small starts. British market is huge and the single state with low pop lets you tap that massive market and run a huge quality of life number to pump that immigration desirability. Good run.
"I'm worried about being all in on groceries here, because one bad thing happens to groceries and our economy crashes." This is like the real Tasmania...
I was talking with my wife and we tuned into the "... and have our dad put them down" and I cannot tell you how hilarious - and disconcerting - it was lmao
Selling groceries, a perishable product, all the way to Great Britain? In 1837 'Groceries' must be dry goods not perishables, surely. Not sure what the game is simulating when refridgeration isn't invented yet.
Intelligentsia opposing Universal Suffrage is a weird thing to happen. It happened because their leader has the Authoritarian ideology. It's a bit like how Corn Laws used to be a ridiculously overpowered mechanic because it gave the Landowners a Market Liberal leader. Easy path out of Traditionalism, straight to Liessez Faire. I also remember an annoying occasion as Japan where the leader of the Samurai had an ideology that aligned them with the Liberal Party, who were the ruling party. Because I couldn't kick them out of government, it stalled the Meiji Restoration since you need to do that in order to do the 'Retire the Samurai' journal entry.
The politics system in Vicky leaves a lot to be desired. Agitators fixed some of issues, but IMO there's still a long way to go before I'd give the system a thumbs up.
I dont know if you already did it. Literally the first vid i ever saw of you but maybe do a unite africa as an african nation save and keep europe out. I fail miserably everytime i try so would be cool 😄
If you try Cuba, here are some tips. Low population is one of the biggest problems. Stay as Spain’s puppet as long as you can for those migrants (~1865 works). Setting up a colony in Africa can get you sulfur, but that convoy route is difficult to defend during war. If you develop too quickly, you’ll have a lot of investment waste, run out of pops, and potentially go bankrupt. Don’t go for charity hospitals at the start; research public healthcare.
@@rj4416 Earliest I broke away was 1856ish. But I found that was too soon when I ran out of pops. 1865 to 1870 worked best for me. You only need to defend against the naval invasions to break away, which is very doable with 15 army units and a decent general, even if Spain is allied with a Great Power (although in that case you’ll need a 10 unit navy so you don’t get naval invaded by both at the same time). I usually annex Puerto Rico from Spain in the same war.
@@rj4416I just saw that with the new update on Aug 28 subjects will no longer remain in their overlord’s market during independence wars, so make sure you’re ready with guns and cannons
You know Kaurna, while having a much higher GDP, might actually be even more of a challenge than Van Diemen's land, given it has virtually no technology at game start, although it does have surprisingly good laws (Serfdom aside).
I’m really curious about Australia’s upbringing. I love history, but I never looked into Australia. All I know is after the independence war with America Britain focused their colonial efforts on Australia and other colonies. Going as far as sending prisoners to help populate.
There wasn't much of a colonial effort in Australia. Australia was a penal colony first and foremost. I think the British called it no man's land and just left the land up for grabs.
thats some very conservative growth you are pulling off here. Whenever i play i usually look to be around -+0 or try to stay comfortably in the red. Depending on how effective your growth is you sometines can even go into debt without worriing at all as your economic output grows faster than your debt, thus you can run a deficit near indefinitely and pay the accumulated debt of the last decade off in a few months as soon as it feels like the right time to do so
This is true for great powers, but the further you are from being a great power the higher interest rates become. Running a deficit as anything less than a major power is going to see interest outpace growth and can over time stagnate/collapse your economy. As a GP though, take it to the limit lol.
@@andrefasching1332 The base value is 20%, which is more than enough to quickly crash an economy if not respected. GPs get a 50% reduction to this and MPs a 25% reduction. It gets progressively worse from there, going up to +100% interest for an unrecognized power. Of course the break points are different depending on the specific circumstances of a playthrough, but from my experience it's when you switch over to Laissez-Faire and get that extra 25% reduction that interest just becomes a number. At that point a GP will have about a 3-4% rate depending on tech and can absolutely sit at max debt and dramatically outpace the interest in GDP gains.
Especially as GBs son, you can pretty comfortably go in the red and GB will take your debt once for an obligation, then you need to balance it somewhat better. The biggest issue at the start of the game is the cultural exclusion, get rid of that to get way more immigration to further industrialization
@@adamconner9302 yeah smth like that. I really should start playing more unrecognized powers. Im really just waiting for any interesting flavor mod to release as minors dont have much to offer rn beside a harder challenge
