Guitar Shopping In Chongqing, China

  • I needed to make a little road trip this week to buy a guitar case, so I thought I'd film the experience so you can see what instrument stores are like in central China. Lower quality than usual, I'm afraid - Chongqing is a really noisy city, and my shaky phone camera footage isn't great, to say the least!

    Cool to see where you are and I was chuffed when you found a case. I was just waiting for you to pull out some licks in the shop, i'm sure the shop guys would have loved it. Safe journey home man!

      Hey Lewis, nice to hear from you! Yeah, as much as I love playing I've always kinda hated playing in guitar stores. The last time I was in the first store I bought the guitar I'm taking home and played it loads in the shop just to make sure it was right, and the big salesman guy was super nice then - so I didn't want to be a bother. Hope you're okay during these strange times. Hopefully see you back home!

    I spent five weeks in Xian. I learnt the necessity of having a guide when buying things. Or more specifically, when getting the change :-/ I didn't know you were over in China. I assumed Scotland.

      Yeah, it's tricky if you don't know any Chinese at all. When it comes to standard everyday stuff we know enough to get by, but I had some specific questions to ask here so I'm very thankful for Xiang Yu's help!

    Chongqing used to be written as Chungking, famous as capital of Nationalist China during WWII after the Japanese raped Nanjing or Nanking in 1937. Chongqing was bombed by the Japanese with great loss of civilian life. Prices in any store in China are simply suggestions of relative value of one item to another, bargaining is mandatory with much protestations and complaints at the attempt to starve their children and rob them of the fat in their bones, in the end they always make a huge profit.

    Bought hard cases for all my guitars before moving out of US. Here in Philippines, Fender and other name brand guitars, prices are outrageous. On top, they won’t set it up for you. Gibson and Epiphone guitars need special tools for set up and they do not sell these. Tried to buy a 220 v transformer to replace the 110v xformer in my Roland amp. From the authorized repair facility and was denied. Apparently you must sent it in to them. I’ll keep using my step down xformer.

    Good result.
    Would they not let you have a play on the lava guitar? Wonder how they sound.

    • @MusicNuggets
      @MusicNuggets  4 года назад +1

      They definitely would have. My experience of Chinese music stores is they're super accomodating and much less cynical than I was when I worked in one! We just didn't have much time. Still wondering what the turbo button does...

      @@MusicNuggets They can be. There are a few odd shops where all guitars are vacuum wrapped and the staff won't unwrap them or let you handle them. Fortunately, they don't get my custom. Other shops are pretty accommodating but nothing like Tommy Lee in Hong Kong.

      Massive range/divide of class in China. In bigger cities a large demographic are much wealthier than UK/US middle classes, but at the same time the folks cleaning streets and working low-level retail are certainly on very little income. There's new money in China from rapid economic development over the last 2-3 decades.

      You're out of your mind. I don't know what country you're from but I can tell you I'm in China right now. (Shanghai May 2024) I am Canadian. Many of these people are waaay more affluent than most people in the west. There's a lot of wealth in China right now. I just went out to dinner and on the way there I saw Rolls-Royce. Ferrari Lotus Lamborghini all over the place. Their phones are way better than ours. Money my friend

      Well, no. There are five main types of guitar in China. The 'original' foreign type - imported, the 'made in China' foreign versions (Epiphone are now essentially all made in China), the quality Chinese original (such as Eastman), the cheap Chinese product (Mingsen/Minsine) and the counterfeit (Chibson and the like). The last one is illegal in China and I've never seen one for sale here. The penultimate types are often sold on Amazon in the US/UK (and aren't really good at all). The rest can be found on Taobao and in guitar shops. Some shops are very good in undercutting Taobao, others not. Incidentally, the PRS Custom 24 (2018) with flight case can be had for just under 25k on Taobao (just checked).
