I’ve never agreed 100% with anyone, but Billy’s take is the most reasonable and likely imo. I’m not sure whether I think she wandered how and died in the woods or someone took her, but everything Billy says leading up to that I agree with 99%. What bugs me is if she’s in the woods, where is she? They’ve searched so many times, they’ve had dogs up there. They must be looking in the wrong place.
You have no idea how many "dirtbags" there are. Two times, when I was in college, I was in a bad situation on the rode: both times the first people who stopped to help me were "dirtbags." The first time, I l Lost control of my car in a bad snowstorm. I ended up in a ditch. Immediately a truck pulled up with a nice-seeming 20-something man, offering to drive me to the next gas station. I was smarter than to get in, normally, but snow was piling up on my car, and I couldn't tell where I was, the visibility was so bad. I got in his truck, and while he navigated through the snowstorm, he also started pawing me and grabbing me. I started screaming bloody murder, and he knocked it off and let me out at an off ramp. The second time, I was with a friend, and a kindly old man tried to abduct us. We jumped out of his moving car. So, "dirtbag" are as at least plentiful as car accidents.
Yikes! As a man I hate to hear that. I've changed a couple of flats for women on the side of the road so all of us aren't creeps. But you are right to be careful and stay safe.
Thank you. This is exactly the point I was trying to address in my own comment. This predatory male "dirtbag" behavior is far more common than people (mainly males, it seems) seem to want to believe. And once some lowlife initiates something along those lines it's a slippery slope that could very easily end in murder. I honestly believe this was Maura's fate.
A good friend of mine had a "dirtbag" experience, only she got harassed at a bus stop after dark by one. A young man pulled up in a red Porsche and offered her a ride home, so she could get away from the dirtbag on the sidewalk. She got in his car. Luckily, this guy was indeed a good Samaritan and took her straight home.
"Occam’s razor states that the simplest solution is correct." But then, practically in the next breath, we hear that despite the astronomical odds, some people win the lottery. Occam's razor is fine, as long as it does not blind someone to all other possibilities. I think that there is a decent possibility that the solution to this case will be a shocker. That's IF the case is ever solved.
I really enjoyed this episode! I very much enjoyed listening to Jensen and his thoughts! I don't necessarily agree with all of his "hows" or "whys" of Maura! But I guess just about everyones opinion is a good when looking for a missing person! Lance and Tim the episodes just keep getting better and better! I'm excited for the next!
Ok , I was 21 once upon a time, I also had an eating disorder and drank too much at that age. Not because I was an alcoholic per say, but I was an over achiever and could only slow my mind down by drinking. I was as thin or maybe even more thin than Maura and I know it wouldn't take much alcohol to really make me dizzy back then, I don't believe she was drunk when she was driving. She had a destination and she was surely not going to get drunk and drive an untrustworthy car into the night. She was a very smart girl, and while smart girls make good grades they don't necessarily make great drivers. In the dark or in the snow, I know all these people saying she wanted to disappear or commit suicide but why? There's no reason for suicide nor to disappear, these shady characters all over the place are the ones that need to be looked into. It's kind of like lemony Snicket's series of misfortunate events, she has a rush of events that at best test her , like the wreck of her dad's car, which I bet she was drunk that time, but the other horrible decisions she'd made, she ,to me, just wanted to get off to a place to gather her thoughts. But to me as an older , hopefully more wise woman, if my husband came home and said hey there's a girl up the road that had an accident, me myself would get into the car, tell the husband to call the police, and I would go sit there with her. Why did the bus drivers wife not go there , the other woman that said she saw the infamous light of a cigarette, why didn't she go sit with the young woman. I'm sorry but this town is weird, I will never travel thru there alone, and I'm so sorry for her family, especially her dad!
How does that woman know that this drunk girl isn't a danger to her or her family ? It's clear that something bad happened to her but we can't blame the witnesses for the girl's own terrible decisions!!
She weights 300 lbs old and can't walk plus it was freezing out...not everyone's a spring chicken. I'm old fat and cripple but like you I would go outside and check on her and offer her a safe place ...I'm sure she didn't want the POLICE involved because she was drinking but maybe not drunk...book smart doesn't count when your in the boon tillies with a car that is on its last legs and drinking...I believe she is 300 feet down the road buried in a cellar did the owner of the house have a relationship with the Haverhill police or the owner of the house killed her and how does the POLICE factor into it ???
So where Maura crashed, it is a well known spot for many accidents...with Atwood being someone that was well aware of that, why did he feel the need to leave her alone? Being someone that lived right on the same road, wouldn't he have assumed that another neighbor would have called the police? If he had any inclination and thought maybe keep her in my sight, after she had said, don't call the police, there wouldn't be any mystery.
Enjoyed the episode and really respect the guest for doing this work for the right reasons. However, he suffers from the same bizarre myopia as Renner with regard to a "crime of opportunity." Do these guys just not understand the meaning of the term? Both use the same absurd scenario of a potential kidnapper/murderer of Maura being extremely unlikely because the person would be "out looking for a victim." WTF? By crime of OPPORTUNITY, those of us who subscribe to that theory are saying it was literally an OPPORTUNISTIC crime committed by someone who was otherwise doing their usual routine. For example, Creepy McCreeperson is just a "regular guy" to those folks who know him in town. He has his day job and his personal habits and social interactions and seems otherwise "normal." But maybe ol' Creepy has some dark thoughts and even darker fantasies that he doesn't share with anyone else and has probably never acted upon. Then one night while heading home from work or whatever, he sees a hot young college coed in distress, walking in the cold winter night and maybe even flagging down his vehicle. Now that Creepy has offered her a ride and has her in his vehicle (with no witnesses or help anywhere to be seen) he starts getting ideas...THAT is a crime of opportunity and THAT sort of shit happens way more often than people like Renner and Jensen seem to want to think. Anyone dismissing the "crime of opportunity" scenario, especially using specious non-arguments, is an IMBECILE. None of us know exactly what happened to Maura that night, but to simply dismiss this theory with no further thought is just plain STUPID. I for one am reasonably certain that this is exactly what happened to Maura Murray.
Hi Peter- really interesting thoughts and i agree with what youre saying that nothing can be dismissed. It seems like people are quick to dismiss every other possibility when they have a pet one they grasp onto and im realizing i am guilty of this and need to stop. You say that the crime of opportunity scenario happens "way more often than people want to think". Do you have statistics on this you wouldnt mind sharing? since you say it happens much more often then many think Im assuming you've looked into this. To tell you the truth I've always throught it was most likely hypothermia but reading you scenario made me stop and think i should really look at it from this angle as well. still cant get behind the tandem driver no matter how much i look at it though!
Yeah, i think so too. The chances are increased by the circumstances, including the fact that there would be no witnesses and that criminals are looking for vulnerable people.
He's a government shill , to steer the investigation away from sensitive areas. Its most likely , why he was let go from Boston , they knew he had a conflict of interest.
I agree. It was more than likely someone going about their regular business and so time of day seems crucial to me. Who would have been on that road in those weather conditions?
I've never heard anyone suggest this, but what are the chances someone hit her by accident and panicked and hid her body? Pretty slim I'm sure. It would be easy for authorities to believe a person telling them they hit her by accident if they reported it.
did maura start running ahead to get out of there, then she went into the woods further on up the road. she was a fast runner. i believe her fastest time was 1 mile in 510, which is really fast.
Interesting interview. Interesting comments. Who were all the known (serial) killers in New Hampshire in February of 2004? Where are all the routes/paths a vehicle could access within a 5-10 mile radius of the crash site? How many women went missing in New Hampshire (or neighboring states) in 2004? Was Maura's vehicle ever checked for tampering? Forget the rag in the tailpipe. Was the air let out of her tires? I've always thought Maura was stalked along the way. A beautiful woman traveling alone over hundreds of miles just needs to catch the eye of 1 bad person. One. I respect your guest's opinion, but as my mama always warned me, the chances of meeting a serial killer are 0%, until you meet one, then it's 100%...and too late to be safe.
Interesting guest, but strange theory. Maura wanted to "re-set" and get away from her problems (including drinking and crashing her father's car) by doing some more drinking and driving up Route 112? And why did she box up all her possessions in her dorm room and stack the boxes on her bed if she was just leaving to "re-set" for a couple of days? Taken together, Maura's actions only make sense if she intended this to be a one-way trip ending in suicide.
Maura had been back at school 7-10 days. You need something out of those boxes if you're there for a week or more. Yet everything in her dorm room was not only packed in boxes, but those boxes were stacked on the only bed in her dorm room. Meaning she couldn't sleep in her bed if the boxes were there since the previous semester and never unpacked. You assume the books in Maura's car were "packed" especially for her last known drive. But as her friend Erin said in the Oxygen series, the two of them frequently commuted off-campus for clinicals, so the books may have been in the car anyway. We don't even know where they were in the car. How about the trunk?
I think a lot of good can be done in terms of evidence by appealing to the public, however I certainly don't agree with non professionals doxing people they deem suspects as that can ruin innocent lives and even interfere with a police investigation. I do not agree with door stepping people either which that tv crime show he works for often does. Even if he or she is a good suspect there are rules of engagement and a police operation is always the best way to go. Citizens should always tell the cops if they have real information. You might end up getting attacked yourself if it really is the right guy !!
Bothers me one thing : how sure can we be about the fact who really drove the Maura ' s car? Was Maura really driving it? Many times I think she was not there at all. Her sis Kathleen was very similar to her in the look. Same as old friend Liz. I think if she drove the car - she is dead. If not- she is hiding somewhere. It does not have to be Canada. It may be Europe as well. Here that case is not so much known and famous. So it is also much easier to hide and stay private.
idk i dont see anything that would indicate her starting a new life. she brought so little, had barely any money, driving an unreliable vehicle....theres just nothing in the way she took off and what she brought that to me would even give a hint that she was leaving forever...then factor in border security since this was post 9-11....plus theres never been a shred of evidence or any thought that she could be in europe. if you say europe you should say asia or africa because those places would be just as unlikely
Hiding from what or whom though??? So you imagine that her entire family would put themselves and everyone else through this because of some young girl's negative thoughts or what??
Post 911, air travel would be very difficult if not impossible to do with a fake identity or whatever. Is there commonly-used sea travel from New England to Europe that could be done without using her real name? I am skeptical she could pull that off. I’d be more inclined to believe her killer, not she, is in Canada or Europe, or even Mexico. Not really buying that either though.
Did the police interview that Scumbag who made that video? 1 thing that bothered me, the odds of something happening to him on the same day she disappered that was so memorable,he wanted to save a souvineer seems very low..That's why I had a uneasy feeling when he put that Lodge receipt up n one of the videos. If police did interview him, they should of called Mauras family & friends & let them beat the hell out of the scumbag when he was leaving police station
I'm just going to throw this out there....I think James Renner has done a lot of damage to Maura's case, and in my opinion he is a weasel for it. I think he got triggered because the Murray family didn't want to participate in his book. I feel like he twisted his theories around that offense. The fact that he announced he's done with this case, but one of the last things he said publicly is that people should NOT contact authorities if they see Maura is very telling about his character. I feel like it verges on narcissism, if not sociopathy.
Thank-you! its Didi he even admitted to Lance and Tim that he is a sociopath. I have never trusted nor liked Renner. Also he went really as low as someone can go by insinuating that Fred had molested Maura that is something you do not say unless you have absolute proof. He knew that when he made that accusation that all of the conspiracy followers would just eat that up, and then they would continue on with his BS until it became 100% truth..Then Fred Murray has to deal with a certain group of ppl constantly blasting him online by accusing him of molesting his daughter that has to hurt Fred deeply, because I believe he loved his daughter and is still grieving because he has no way of locating her remains or catching the sicko that took her life(sorry but she is dead that is just common sense if you get clear from all of the conspiracies, and I believe she got in the wrong car that night) This case has taken on a whole other scenario than what really happened..
40:10. That's exactly what Israel Keyes said he did. The odds a girl passing by being pretty, probably better than one might think. Occam's razor applies most of the time (smh at myself) but sometimes it doesn't. Apparently the percentage of homocide victims being the victim of a serial killer is less than 0.01%. But Billy Jensen makes an pretty good living off the stories of those victims. Clearly, Occam's razor doesn't always apply. Not saying that's what happened, I just get tired of hearing that.

I assumed that if the cop didn't think she was drunk, he just took the shape of the road and the weather, as well as her age, to explain the accident.
Yessss a new one!

She told him that she didn't want any help. What was he supposed to do ? Hold on to her and get accused of false imprisonment??
automaically disqualified for believing it was Oswald
My thoughts exactly. What a rube lol
I agree with Mr. Jensen's theory, it what I concluded several episodes ago.
That's whats up I been waiting on this!!!

good possibility i think

Brent it's a good thing you don't run a law enforcement agency
The first part of your comment made sense at least!
How has this not been solved by now geeeez!
Or they just can't find the place where she killed herself
i cant focus on anything other than Billy's hotness.
Interesting but not sure about his JFK theory ...
No one with half a brain believes that nonsense.
heyyy Billy

She was killed in the A frame house. Trust me
Sounds Like it's Michelle Mcnamara, Patton Oswalt's late wife that worked with Jensen.
jensen finished mcnamara book.
I bet the Amherst ATM tells the story. Someone was there.
good job fellers
Pee-Wee?
Q. Who was the man that was shot in the back of the head in a theater by an actor?
A. The man in front of Pee-Wee Herman!!
Broooskie, das my name!!!! But I'm a girl
