From what i gathered i think during most of the song he is speaking to his son, teaching his son. Then during the chorus he is speaking to his baby mama & their relationship how she takes the kid away from him.
This song transcends musical genres, the message gets across to EVERYONE! My friends have a cover band, and they play this song at a lot of their shows, and it always brings down the house! The whole crowd is singing along with them, it's a hell of a bonding moment. The only other song that does this is "Mr Brightside" by The Killers. You guys should do that one as well.
