What a decent and caring man. That is why he is so respected and loved by so many people. He is truly a mensch in every sense of the word.
This is why I adore David Hyde Pierce. My husband had the same dementia as his grandfather, only he had early onset, He understands how it affects families. This disease is very cruel. It Takes away those you love, they become strangers.

I'm so sorry. My grandmother has dementia I care for her full time. She is 98 the doctors say how I should be grateful she got it later in life it's still hard because she raised me.

I love David Hyde Pierce for being such a wonderful actor and an advocate for this disease. Thank you for sharing your story. I can see the pain in your eyes. I know that pain and sadness too as my mother suffers and my grandmother suffered from this awful disease. I pray that a cure or lasting treatment is found soon.

I loved this actor in Fraiser.
I'm so pleased he is speaking out about this terrible cruel disease. I cared for my husband for many years until he died last summer. The journey we went on together was slow and distressing but rewarding too. Thankfully he still had some quality of life before he died.
My mom's mom is in moderate Alzheimer's now.. we just are in the process of selling her car she can still cook still walk places still loves to travel but I know this is only the beginning.. thank God for Aricept she takes it every day that she's home I cherish the times right now where she knows who I am because I know the time is coming when she won't.
My Dad is dealing with dementia, and has been for many years. Looking forward to celebrating his 80th Birthday this weekend. 🎉❤

That is very true about the pandemic and alzheimers getting worse. My mom was diagnosed with dementia in early 2020 and once the lockdown happened she got progressively worse. She just lie in bed and not get up despite my encouragements. Then in August of 2020 she was gone. Worst time of my life.
So very sorry for your loss. You must have just felt so helpless. My husband has early onset Alzheimer’s and I have just watched him fading over the last two and a half years. His disease is progressing a lot slower, but it’s still so heartbreaking.

I hope you are doing better in your situation and with your family. I just saw your comment, I’m 28 and have become a caretaker suddenly 2 years ago. My grandmother is 86 and suffered a stroke. I’m getting help from my mom now that I moved grandma from her home in Texas to my home in Oklahoma. It’s been a hard, long, slog. But I’m glad to have grandma with me as she helped raise me and never asked for anything in return.
@@2004cyrusthank you for taking care of her! I've worked as a therapist in stroke rehab and many of the important gains are done with family care. Many just leave it to the hour or two of professional therapy a day and don't continue the rest of the 23 hours to gently help move their joints or stroke their hands/feet to give touch input or even talk to them (even if they're having trouble/unable to communicate back clearly yet) to progress language expression and understanding . All of these things in the 23 hours/day they're not in formal therapy does wonders for making new neural pathways and bc it's meaningful (with/for a family member), it usually helps rehab progression significantly!

I used to volunteer at an art centre where on a Thursday morning we used to have an art group for people with dementia/Alzheimer’s called the YPWD (Young People With Dementia) art group. I was part of a different art group for people with long term disabilities who class was at the same time and when the centre lost funding for my class some of us joined the YPWD group. To see people at the different stages of the illness was quite incredible and sad at the same time. Some were using the full resources to paint beautiful pictures while others were just able to manage some colouring in. They used to hold a display for them once a year in the cafe displaying their artwork to.

Such a valuable discussion! David Hyde Pierce is doing a great service to talk about Alzheimer's.
When my mother developed Alzheimer's, someone suggested that I attend a support group meeting, and I decided not to because I didn't want to hear about what the future held. A big mistake. I would urge people to search out support groups; dealing with this issue in your family alone is not the way to go.

I met him many years ago in California while attending a health conference of sorts. Though brief it was a good on topic conversation. Within 2 years, I met his sister. Quiet and unassuming. But that was briefer than brief.
Well done, Sir David! Cruel disease beyond words - due to the isolation as he articulates so well: "we're either going to have it or love someone who has it or encounter someone on the street who has it... and we owe it to them to know about it and be kind". Freaking well said.
If you need an example of how to be a gentleman - follow David Hyde Pierce's example. The man is class personified!

I had to look after my mother with dementia for a very long time. My uncle also had it. At the age of 61, it's difficult knowing this.

anyone who has had family dying of this horrible disease can feel the pain in niles voice. well-spoken and educated. It is not only Alzheimer's it is frontal dementia caused by anesthesia too

He made a wise decision steering clear of the Frasier reboot, it's awful.
"At a time when everyone is a victim and looking for someone to blame"....take note, the hosts hid fr that comment :)
Yet they spend all their time creating victims.
Does Pierce's "advocacy" extend to lending assistance to the Usurper currently occupying the Whitehouse in order to see that the enfeebled one gets the care he so desperately needs or must we all continue to witness this monumental form of elder abuse take place on such a grand public stage?

Baffling that you felt the need to say this. I really thought Alzheimer’s was one of those uniting issues but I guess not. Sad!
Pierce is a totally selfish, self-centered diva. He could care less about the millions of fans that made him the successful queen that he is. Otherwise, he would show up and play Niles even in a guest role on the new Frasier. That would be respecting the fans who supported him. Tom Cruise does that - Tom cares about his fans, loves them, and reprises his roles...to give the fans what they want! ...But Pierce isn't even in the same universe as Cruise. David is all about David, period.
