    Yeah , I used to have Amazon frogbit in a shrimp tank and the shrimp seemed to disappear , I later found it during a water change that they were all hidden in the frogbit and were breeding like crazy, the number went from 3 to 30 in a month

    I'd say water sprite is a great beginner plant. It is pretty much bullet proof and grows like crazy, giving new hobbyists a satisfying start into planted aquariums.
    Starting with difficult plants that die instantly will discourage people to continue the hobby, happened to a friend of mine..

    as a new fish tank hobbyist i gotta make a case for duckweed. seriously! it is actually a great indicator for me as a learner to tell if things are okay in the tank. if it slows down growth i know to check the tank for problems and/or add fertilizer. if its growing fast it gives me a reason to scoop and interact with the tank every couple days. and since its also a giant pain in teh ass its motiving me to start more tanks that arent contaminated with it.

    9:00 as someone who makes ecosphere I can confirm how godlike snails are! They are a major part of keeping the plant-life in check (especially since I seal them completely), from my experience they typically they outlast all other animal-life, and if I see the snails dying off then usually the ecosphere is on its way out lol
    Love the vids, keep it up! (and before anyone gets the idea that I stock them using store-bought critters- everything inside of them is caught and collected locally)

I have no idea how to tie it to a rock or one of my driftwoods so i put a rock on half of its roots and it has now successfully grown its 5th leaf!:D they are worth around 25$ here aswell because one lfs priced them high and the others just... followed i guess. free plant surviving better than any of my others, and it's in the worst corner of my tank aswell. great starter plant. would recommend. i have no idea what i am doing.

    My QOTW plant for beginners is guppy grass. You can plant it into your substrate? Or put it in a net with big holes and keep it in a ball shaped growth or just let it float around in your tank and let it find its own way.
    Guppy grass is a tough plant and will do the job to keep your tank filtered and provide enough hiding spots for eggs and fry

    • @mongguppiesandendlers
      @mongguppiesandendlers 3 месяца назад

      I just bought 30 ft of guppy grass for my 110 gallon pond. I have never had guppy grass before but i like what i have read about it. I am really hoping it chokes out the hair algae in my pond.

    • @EuroGupper
      @EuroGupper 3 месяца назад +2

      @@mongguppiesandendlers Guppy grass grows fast (hard water + light)
      If you having trouble growing it as a floating plant, stick a few strands in your substrate. (Or keep a few strands where sunlight reaches them just in case your lighting isn't ideal which goes for basically any plant)
      And remember. Always buy the minimum amount of each plant.
      Buying 10 plants of each and finding out that they are dying later is a waste a your money
      From my experience guppy grass will overrun your aquarium within a few months, remove any hair grass now or it could grow entangled in-between your guppy grass (if planted)

    • @mongguppiesandendlers
      @mongguppiesandendlers 3 месяца назад +1

      @@EuroGupper Thank you! I do have some floating and then the rest of it i rubberbanded to a lava rock on the bottom of the pond. It gets decent light from about 6am-noon then it's in the shade. I remove the hair algae several times a week and am hoping between the guppy grass and the duckweed that appeared in the pond, they use up any excess nutrients and the hair algae problem is fixed.

    A couple months ago, my neighbor got a Axolotl when they had probably never taken care of a fish. They were seven. A couple weeks into it I went over to their house just to check in on it, so it wouldn’t die. She had not changed the water. You could see the water evaporation marks and the tank was now only half full of water. Not only that, but there was only a few rocks for it to hide behind, and the aquarium light was constantly on. I honestly hope it jumped out of that tank and became a land animal. 😰

    Favorite beginner plant is crypts - low light requirement, pretty tolerant to water changes, slow growing but interesting to look at compared to most beginner plants. I always tell people that they grow slow but that's better then having to constantly trim things every week. Also I think most beginner plants that are recommended are always fast growing plants best used in the background - not many foreground plants suggested and crypts fill that space.

    Ludwigia natans super red! The only plant I’ve found that can turn really red even with low tech (that’s not a floating plant). Not a lot of people know about it and it’s super underrated. It can be prone to root melt but you just have to float it until roots come out before you plant it.

    To avoid accidentally removing shrimplets when you skim your floating plants, just pinch the top of the plant off and drop the roots back in.

    Vallisneria Americana is my favorite beginner plant. It's the most versatile Vallis. Many people buy Spiralis and find it doesn't grow long enough, or Australis and find it grows too long. Americana is super easy, and hits that sweet spot in the middle where it will grow to canopy your aquarium if you want it to, but you can also keep it trimmed short enough easily if you don't.

    ~8:00 I had this happen to me once. It was a pretty new tank, did a water change and filled the water level up above the internal filter outlet. A few hours later the fish were all up at the surface like this. I repositioned the filter so the outlet agitated the surface more, and the fish acted normal again.
    Surface agitation is important for gas exchange, which is necessary if you have no other way of getting O2 into the water. Plants in the water will provide O2 and remove CO2, so surface agitation is not really needed in a well planted tank.

    For the QOTW I swear by anubias nana petites for all tanks no matter the lighting, but I've also taken to my amazon frogbit. The only issue I have with the frogbit is that I always have to thin them out and toss away tons of healthy plants simply because they shade over my other plants that need light under them. That's the only reason the anubias beats out frogbit: less maintance and no pain from culling.

    I have tank envy. I'm ready to pay our local fish expert to come do a big setup. 2 years after getting my daughter little feeder goldfish and the largest is nearly 12 inches. We're running out of room and blowing through filters fast. The last time I tried to add plants, the goldfish fought over what side of the tank they should be on and the plants were shredded to the roots in a week.
    We're going back to bettas next time. XD

    Java moss and hornwort will take any light, they feed from the water not roots so any substrate will work, and they just keep growing. Super easy. Pothos plants can grow out the top too if you just let the roots touch the water

    Anubias was definitely the first plant I didn't kill. And it's still the coolest damn thing to me that java fern leafs can be glued on to something and they'll continue to grow. Like any time a leaf gets knocked off, I just glue it on to a rock and stick it in another tank. So cool.
    Hornwort and frogbit were my first plants I ever ordered off the internet. I was fish-in cycling and my daily water changes were too aggressive for the poor frogbit to survive... but a fishtuber mentioned they could put hornwort in a bucket outside and it would thrive, so I've been keeping some in a tub on my back porch ever since. I rotate it out with the ones in my tanks occasionally so they can all get a vacation and some sun.

    9 times out of 10, working at Petsmart, I point to Java Ferns and Anubias sp.
    The next step beyond that is usually Cabomba since it gets big and fluffy and doesn't need special equipment to do so.

    for the glass tube that's difficult to clean, you can get these long wire with a tiny bottle brush on the end for cleaning trombones (an i presume other long tubes instruments), should be able to find them online or maybe at a local music shop that has brass instruments

    Thanks Chris and Milly
    I'm thinking of including the following plants in my first tank:
    Red root floaters
    Anubias (some pygmy forward and normal size behind)
    Java fern
    These both have good architectural properties.
    Not sure what ground cover I want yet, and probably need some softer textured faster growing plants
    Oh and some java moss for attaching to the hardscape.
    Stocking will be a Betta in a 12 gallon tank.
    Will be checking the comments for ideas.

    • @michaelgeorge4643
      @michaelgeorge4643 Год назад +1

      You can use java moss for the ground cover, just buy some ceramic tiles and tie the moss to the tiles and spread the tiles over the surface of the substrate where you want the moss to grow. It'll form a thick bush all over the ground over the course of a few weeks. Just make sure you have enough red root floaters to block out the light, because those are all low light plants (with the exception of the floaters which are high light) and algae is going to kill the moss if the light isn't subdued drastically before hitting the moss. Contrary to what most people might think, too much light can also kill plants, just like too little light can kill them too. Good luck
      Edit: I'd also say if you're getting a 12 gallon tank with a betta you should definitely add some snails like ramshorn snails to keep it clean. You can also add a schooling fish like ember tetras, bettas don't bother them. Avoid guppies or dwarf rasbora species, stick with small tetras

    My shrimp tank is covered in salvinia and duckweed (impossible to get rid of). I use a couple glass containers to isolate small quantities of plants and then painstakingly check and re check every angle for shrimplets. What a nightmare. Thankfully they are caridina pandas that breed slow enough that I can usually wait til a generation is big enough not to miss. Usually :D

    When I started my go-to was definitely anubias and still is because it seems even I can’t kill it. Then I would say wendtii crypts, java moss, and duckweed if you want to have a plant that is like a hydra where you take one out and it’s replaced by two more.
