  • This video is a vlog of a trip to Kyoto by a Japanese family living in Tokyo. Today's video is kind of special. Because I'm taking you back to my home, where I spent time as a maiko geiko. I think that not many people, no matter how many trips they have taken to Japan, have experienced this culture. I have learned many important things in my life in this town called Gion. It is a place that always reminds me of my beginnings.
I can't post info on the maiko place, but the link to the beautiful Ryokan where we stayed is below. I couldn't find their website in English, so here is a link to a blog that someone wrote about it in detail. Please check it out!

I love one thing about Japan is they still preserve their own culture even though they are so modernized. Additionally, their culture is quite simplistic and disciplined in a way that is morally grounded.

Giving hospitality/care to the guest with a pure heart, deeply from the bottom of the heart, with no other thoughts involved. もてなす(motenasu), the verb form of omotenashi, means think about others with a genuine heart and treat them with sincere kindness.
(The origin meaning is not well known even to Japanese)
      When Moe heard it....
Moe said, “when I heard the meaning, I learned that we can make the world a better place if everyone tries to have 'omotenashi' heart."

Incredible vlog! I'm so impressed with the thought being the shojin breakfast set, and touched when Moe explained how the chef thought about the eater and the eater thought about the chef. When she started stacking the bowls within one another I was shocked, anyone have any idea what those bowls are called or where to get them?

This is really fascinating. I felt like ppl who work in culture-related career that passed down through generations is totally amazing. They’re the knight of history, working to preserve valuable cultures to next generations.
Idk about japan situation but in my country, ppl who working to keeping old cultures be called ‘old school’. It’s not something everyone appreciated and not something that you can make money with. The social perception toward them is different from someone being ‘doctor’ ‘lawyer’ or ‘engineer’.

Moe-san thank you so much 😿 If I have the opportunity to go to Japan, it is my dream to do what is in this video. I realized again what a beautiful day it would be if my dream came true. I am grateful to you for reminding me of this. 💖

My first impression was... wait, is it not Kyo in Kyoto? Maiko in Kyoto? Then realised this is from Kimono Mom, that trained as a maiko.
Am I correct in assuming the woman dressed in white is a geiko, while the one in green is a maiko?

What a beautiful vlog. I enjoyed every moment of this. Everything was so interesting, elegant and beautiful. Sutan did not only look like a princess, she behaved like one as well, on her best behaviour. Well done Sutan. It’s not easy for a toddler to sit quiet. The Maiko and Geisha are so mesmerising. How good it must have been for you to see them again.
The Ryokan is so well planned out, the garden, the shoji doors, the view and the food and the hospitality of the lady. You must have had a grand day out. Thank you for sharing it with us. 🙏🏻
