  • Using Fate-style zones with aspects to run fun, creative theater-of-the-mind combat encounters.
A great article by Sly Flourish on this same technique: slyflourish.com/fate_style_zon...

Excellent idea! Thanks for the reminder about Fate. I hadn't thought about that game in a while; it has some great ideas to help with role playing and theater of the mind.

That's just what I needed. Been struggling DMing lately so this is so much appreciated.

I do this for my RPG settlements in a similar fashion. I'm terrible at drawing evocative city maps and this is probably a way to enable my laziness, but I'll determine the relative geographical boundary of a city, place several ruled index cards adjacently to one another (vertically & horizontally) and write down the name of the settlement on each card along with the neighborhood or district name along with important locations, NPCs, terrain features and descriptions, etc and then numbered points of intersection along the edges of the cards or terrain in the case of sides that don't intersect.
It's actually really quick to assemble a city of say, 10 cards by intersecting point and way more efficient than tracking down individual notes written on a 8 1/2 x 11 lined sheet of paper.
It's also really easy to write notes on the cards when you improvise locations on the spot, or need to write down notes about your players activities or status when you need to.

How in all negative aligned planes have I NEVER thought of this!? This is ingenious!

I enjoyed this video and I think this is a very logical approach to combat. I think there's a lot of variety to be created through the terrain which takes the experience much further beyond the "You see monsters, roll for initiative."

Ooh, this could be very useful in my next session.
Some of my players dislike grids, and this could be a great alternative.
    Thanks. :)

My players enjoy maps and minis, but I don't always like running combats on a grid. So yes, this is a great compromise!

I think I would just write "boulders" and "kegs", requiring Perception or physically going up and testing the boulder, looking in the keg, etc, to identify them as loose or explosive.

This is great tip, Matt. I recently ran my first theatre of the mind style session, and my players found it a little disorientating without the map (I was a bit rusty too!). They want to go back to the map, which is fine, but at some point I may throw in another mapless encounter with a few cards to help detail the environment. Thanks! :D
P.S. Y'all got any more of them Provokers?

I'm seeing a great crossover from this guy's "Zone Combat" style circular theater map (ruclips.net/video/7_hq7JE55CQ/видео.html), his concept of leading the characters to the important encounters using "Theater of the Mind" story telling so as not to lose them in the grid map or terrain (ruclips.net/video/8Qk0KcM2vGE/видео.html), and this product (could easily be DIY'd) that is similar to Matt's Fate Style Zones to instantly generate a quick campaign narrative (ruclips.net/video/Z99j-TUYhoU/видео.html).
Changed my DMing completely, and took so much stress out. Made it much faster moving, creative, adaptive, and fun.
Sorry this responding three years later.

Do you make any considerations for classes who get significant speed boosts, like monks or barbarians?

    • @aFistfulofDice
      @aFistfulofDice  7 лет назад +1

Definitely! I would consider allowing them to maneuver behind enemies or even cross two zones with a single move action.
