      PFG666 Those that muffle the words to achieve a false "darkness" aren't doing anything justice. It should be both, ideally. Very dark and sonorous but also clear and bright. Chiaroscuro.

    Well, what a revelation! Having heard Fischer‐Diskauu's competent but less than totally successful 'attempt' at this aria I had reservations about Hampson tackling it but by jove he nails it and in my opinion much better than F‐D. He's not up there with the mighty rich textured voices of the past but I'm nonetheless astounded by the achievenent given that his general repertoire encompases lighter material. And I wholeheartedly agree with those commentators who praise his excellent diction. I can only repeat, what a revelation...

    What idiocy to carp about Hampson's voice being too light or too tenorish. This is a LYRIC baritone role unlike most Verdi baritones. Verdi uses dolce to emphasize the sweetness of the sound that needs to be vocalized and Hampson is perfect (despite his wooden stage movements)

      Difiero respetuosamente. Hampson posee un excelente registro y un timbre hermosisimo, óptimo para una buena gama de repertorio, pero no para Verdi. El aria posee unos cuantos agudos exigentes pero eso no justifica lo parecidas que suenas las voces. Como testimonio, están Bruson, Capuccilli, Bastianini, Tezier y muchos otros capaces de lograr dichos agudos sin que su voz sea semejante a la de un tenor.

    • @bodiloto
      @bodiloto 8 лет назад +5

      Hampson = tenore corto,è un fatto.
      cosa c'è in comune fra la vocalità meravigliosa di Bastianini e questo giovane entusiasta?...
      niente.
      poi Bruson aveva il suo modo unico di porgere.
      Cappuccilli molto diverso da Bruson,un altro grande.
      Tezier un ragazzo giovane bravo e intelligente chi canta al modo suo e che non gioca nel loro campionato...
      ma Bastianini ?
      Bastianini era semplicemente un dio.
      è ovvio che Hampson è un tenore corto chi sta cantonando con una vocina poco bella.
      dal vivo è così.
      ciao.

    This, for me at least, is the only Verdian role Hampson should sing; and he sings it well. Germont pere is largely a lyrical role, which does not call for the sheer vocal size and thrust required for Rigoletto, Rodrigo, Boccanegra, Macbeth, Carlo -- note how the orchestral backing of "Di Provenza" largely comprises strings).
    The production is absurd at best, at worst stupid. But that's another topic.
