  • Prowler is a kind elderly man who eats pizza and hangs out with sock puppets in an abandoned theatre, but then a radioactive rat arrived and became his friend. Together they have an adventure through some magical rainforest, where canned soup grows on trees and tea bags are as bigs as Whales. Perhaps we all live in an abandoned theatre inside.

@gamfluent2857 Nah, this line about "Black Peter Parker" is just regurgitated nonsense. As someone who started following the comics around issue 12-14 of Mile's original run, the problem was a general LACK of personality outside of his trying to live up to the Spider-Mantle, which itself could have been compelling enough to let the writers figure him out over time. Unortunately Marvel kept forcing him to appear or tie into one event after the other, trying to save the Ultimate universe's sales through hype, rather than good storytelling.

The Spiderverse Prowler was my favorite version. The Ultimate version seemed to be trapped in the same self-destructive cycle as the rest of the Ultimate Universe during its final days. He's there to be edgy, traumatize Miles, make a big splash, and die. The game version was better too, and I especially liked how he redeemed himself at the end by putting his faith in Miles. I know I would. But Spiderverse was the perfect balance of love, menace, style, and growth. He's a perfect counter to Jefferson, who I also loved more in Spiderverse for just being an endearing dork in Miles' life. He's an effective and terrifying threat to Miles as the Prowler, pursuing him with a relentless fervor that made me think of the Terminator or the Predator. And at the end of it all, his love for his nephew was stronger than his love for himself, and I love that in a villain. He was just so much more in Spiderverse, more sympathetic than Ultimate Prowler, more dynamic and intimidating than the game Prowler.

The original Aunt May was the nostalgic ideal, both her and Ben were like a Norman Rockwell painting come to life. The Amazing May was the more relatable mother figure, with the neuroses, the heartbreak, and the struggle to make ends meet by reentering the work force. The MCU May was the most modern interpretation, the supportive mother figure who tries to understand her nephew as a person rather than an eternal child and gets involved in his life and his interests.

To me the game version of Aaron was a sort of blend between the comic and film version of him, because he was manipulative and like Miles said, didn’t hesitate to fight him, but like the movie version he still cared for and loved Miles, so the game version makes him seem less abusive but more like violently overprotective, he just didn’t want to lose Miles like he lost his brother, and I know how much you love trauma😂, so one could say that the trauma of losing his brother to the hero life is why he made the mistakes he did and put Miles in danger, so overall, he’s got a mix of both versions with different context.

The idea of Donald Glover playing Prowler is actually kind of cool.
Actually, I'd love it if the MCU remembers that post-credits scene because maybe there can be a cool character development moment with Miles on the other side of that phone call. Maybe Miles is going through something that will be a major mark on his character. He calls Uncler Aaron to see if he can help him, but because of Peter's webs, he can't.
Also, the fact that you blew my mind with Uncle Ben there. So many people make Spider-Man about Uncle Ben when he can be much more than that.

I really love the way you analyzed how different aspects of the self are represented through the different interpretations of Uncle Aaron - but I think there's a lot to be said about having a black villain in the comics explicitly redeem himself through the Spiderverse movie. Additionally, I think there's also a lot of emphasis on Aaron's character when it comes to contrasting him to Mile's dad. All three relationships are different but I feel like Miles is caught in a middle space between the brothers no matter what: literally halfway between a criminal and a cop as a vigilante. Unlike Peter, Miles has so many guardian figures that their ideals contrast which forms a lot of Mile's own identity struggles. It was an amazing video, and I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I just wanted more of your analysis because it's always so interesting!

I'm only familiar with Uncle Aaron in Spider-Verse but his arc, like everything else in that movie, was so well done. That scene where he realizes it's Miles he's about to kill and slowly pulls Miles' mask back down, my heart skipped a beat thinking he was doing it to not look him in the eye when he kills him. But then he backs off. That scene was just incredible.

True, but context matters. It _can_ mean "Don't let people you care about take advantage of you." But when Prowler says it in that scene, what he actually means is: "Take advantage of people who care about you."

All it said was that was a man for hire, and that he had gadgets cause super hero comics. But then after a few encounters with spider, he turned good and joined a super hero group. I thought he was cool and all and when the trailer for spider verse came out, I was, without a doubt, HYPED. Never read comics with him, literally knew nothing besides what I read in that book. Yet, I could not wait for him to be in the big screen and I’m glad I watched this version of him first as it encapsulates the idea I had about him. Someone who’s not necessarily but doing sketchy jobs but will do good when there’s he’s given a reason to stop. On the movies case, not killing his nephew. Fantastic analysis, man (as usual), I think Brian Michael Bendis' run on Miles merely had the concept of a great character and story but never one that was built on properly, at least not until future writers (Saladin Ahmed: writer of the current Miles Morales run) and Phil Lord and Chris Miller and the 3 directors of Spider-Verse took that foundation and ran with it. And that applies to not any character than the Prowler, excluding Miles, I like the themes of 'Self' that you tackle in the video and he's a great contrast to Peter and Uncle Ben but he was killed off before his character could get no where with his characterization and said themes.

Fun fact Prowler has existed in comics longer than Miles. It was back in the 70’s when they thought of him. His name was Hobie Brown. He was a black man who worked as a window cleaner but was also a skilled inventor and came up with some plans to make their job safer but his boss was a racist and wanted to hear nothing from him and after an argument with his boss in the Daily Bugle (which JJJ tried to break up and even defended Hobie) he quit. He wanted to sell his inventions but given how poor he was and his race that was hard especially in the 70’s so he came up with a plan. He’d use his inventions to make a suit that would make it look like he had powers. Gloves that allowed him to stick to walls, increased strength, they were all inventions he wanted to patent and sell. He used this super suit to fake a crime spree as The Prowler when the Prowler steals something Hobie would return with the stolen goods claiming he used his inventions to stop him, it’s free advertising.
Unfortunately during his first Robbery Pete would accidentally fall out the window and Prowler panicked thinking he killed an innocent man. Pete was fine of course and used the opportunity to change his outfit and fight him as Spider-Man. Eventually Spider-Man figured out what was actually going on an let him go but told him to not pull this stunt again.
Prowler would return to help Pete often being one of the nicer Anti-Heroes. Prowler was an excellent thief and that would sometimes get him into conflicts with Spider-Man but more often Prowler was stealing from criminals and had a strong sense of Justice.

Idk why they are making him electro when he would literally make the perfect Prowler in a Miles Morales story.

I can totally see Foxx's post-Far From Home Electro becoming a power-hungry if well-intentioned mentor to a young and impressionable new Spider-Man. Yes, we technically already have Donald Glover BUT IMAGINE a *reformed* Max Dylan, electrician, a mortal man who used to be a literal god, moonlighting as a gadget-based supervillain, forever craving the limelight of his past, suddenly given the opportunity to mold and manipulate the sparkle-fingered successor of his old nemesis???!!!

LOL "The importance of a C list character that spent the majority of his existence in obscurity"... The character has been around since 1969, yet only recently has ANY significance. Yeah yeah yeah, someone is going to argue that it's someone different under the mask... doesn't change anything. The Prowler is still the Prowler. And if it wasn't for BMB running out of available characters to use after Jeph Loeb screwed the pooch and used Ultimatum to kill everyone, there's a very good chance that the Prowler would STILL be shrouded in obscurity.

The movie one is the best
In comics he is just so obviously manufactured to be the opposite of uncle Ben. And it doesn't help, that whole "Miles Morales" is pretty damn bad. Especially under Bendis who has hard time understanding what the hell he writes.
In game he just kind of doesn't click. He works as a part of the story, but his design is meh and he would work far better as a cool uncle who gives out some questionable, but, ultimatelly, well-meaning advice.
He would work especially well, if he was this foil to Rio's teachings. Like, Aaron gives out some questionable advices, in his 40s still working some BS job we all did once during school summer to get money for bike, and is clearly not someone that should be your hero, but he is a happy guy, who enjoys his life and has no regrets. While Rio and Miles' dad are strict and want their son to succeed through hard work, not slack off and be like Aaron. And how it is harder to justify as it gets clear that hard work killed dad and hardly works in case of Rio, while Aaron is cool and wants Miles to be happy, not necessarily successful.
