Alright, the next two videos are the War Machine character analysis and my One X-Cellent scene contribution, and further down the line, I plan to do Comparing Amazing Spider-Man and Comparing MJ videos.
Black Ninja a dramatic shift in tone. The first two films were more the same, safe, kid-friendly flicks but Prisoner pushed the franchise in a much darker and mature setting.
I hope its not a stupid spiderverse movie though, it would do a disservice to toms spiderman character while giving fan service to the people who aren't that thankful of what mcu spiderman brings

I'm surprised no one else has brought up the similarities. Even if you don't like Far from Home or feel its not a good Spider-man movie, i thought some of the similarities were fairly obvious.
The level of quality is off the scale, simultaneously inspiring me to make my own video essays but also making me doubt if I'd even come close to something like this.

As long as you can back up that your video is for educational purposes, you should be fine. Also, idk about Implicitly Pretentious, but I personally like Premiere Pro for my editing. It costs a bit, but it's very intuitive imo.
Raimi’s Spider-Man is more mature yet campy, while MCU Spider-Man is more modern and grounded but both encompass the core values and characteristics of Spider-Man regardless I never understand why if someone prefers one they feel the need to shit on the other, they’re both great.
Parvis then that’s just simply your opinion, nowhere did I say you can’t prefer one or the other, or that you can’t dislike either or I specifically stated I don’t agree with anyone “shitting on” any version based off the necessity in their minds to choose a side. I can also give you multiple reasons as to why I disagree with your point about MCU Spider-Man not having the character’s values or not taking itself seriously but majority of it will be chalked up to opinions making it moot because I doubt I’d change your mind regardless anyway.
Lanky Lanxx I think the problem is in the fact that if ur trying to make a contesting point, it requires information to back it up. I can easily say MCU Spidey is modern and goofy rather than grounded. Not to say there aren’t moments where it is grounded. There are several instances where that’s very much true, but Far From Home is arguably more goofy than grounded. Raimi’s Spidey is mature, campy, and *grounded*. At the end of the day, yes they are opinions but if ur going to make a stronger case then it’s required for u to provide context and information to back up ur claims. Ur opinion becomes very much well rounded and is difficult to argue against as it’s understood that it is a well thought out opinion and not a point to contest. As u can see my perception of these iterations is different from urs and feels easy to oppose.
kk den I think the problem is in the fact that you believe I’m trying to make a contesting point...I’m not here to debate opinions which I feel I’ve made clear if you read my last response in the thread, I feel as though that should’ve been made clear. My point is regardless of opinions it isn’t necessary to shit on one movie due to favouritism for the other as both versions are great in their own ways. Spider-Man the character has been around for almost 60 years with multiple interpretations and iterations in comics, cartoons and live action adaptations, no one can give a factual claim to one definitive version, only their preferred ones. If you feel the movies differ from each other in a different way than I claimed, cool but that’s still not the actual point I was making let alone a “contesting point”.
Parvis lol to be completely honest with I personally loved the amazing Spider-Man 1 and still enjoy the sequel but my comment is mainly for those who bash Raimi’s version or the MCU version simply because they tend to feel the need to pick a side. Personal experience tells me that isn’t so much the case with the Amazing Spider-Man films so I omitted it from my initial comment, but you’re right that was wrong of me to do.
@Michael Freed I would like to respectfully disagree with those points brought up. Granted Andrew Garfields interpretation of the wall crawler doesnt have money problems, extreme issues with women or the fact that anyone could be spiderman like many fans relate to/like about Peter Parker but I genuinely believe the Amazing SpiderMan was possibly the best live action spiderman film. On the issues with women point, he definuitely has some, any scene with Gwen until the end of the first film he is a stuttering anxious mess. I would say that is having issues with women in my opinion. Andrew has issues in the series, anxiety, lonliness, trauma due to loss, awkwardness around girls he's attracted to, anger issues, ptsd. These are quite relatable, and if not, at least reasons to like him, granted they are flaws but it's what makes him human. My personal issue with the Toby Maguire and Tom Holland films is that Peter Parker feels more 2 dimensional comparative to Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker. He is cocky, an asshole, vengeful, immature, awkward, selfish, ignorant, has long lasting trauma caused by his parents and Uncle Ben's death and clearly has anxiety of some descriptions. But he is also heroic, he looked out for the little guy even before he got his powers. He is kind, smart, caring. That doesnt mean he is perfect. SpiderMan isnt meant to be perfect. SpiderMan is meant to be relatable. SpiderMan is a teenager. Despite these blatant flaws, Peter grows, he becomes responsible, mature, empathetic. He doesn't have to worry abou this dual life with Gwen because Gwen was his best friend, his only friend after Ben passed. He doesn't think about the risk that may put Gwen in at that point in time because he hadn't had to face anything he couldnt handle. There are different ways to interperet Peter Parker, he doesnt have to be one set character type, this version of Peter Parker, Mark Webb's interpretation, is honestly truly amazing once you lift biases from previous films about the beloved web slinger. And they did explain why Harry thought that SpiderMan's blood would save him. He had a genetic disease that was going to kill him, like it did with his father. His father tried everything to save himself and failed, and documented it all for Harry. In said documents it shows a video explaining the experiments done by Richard Parker on Spider DNA potentially allowing people to self-heal damaged cells, like a spider. This is not a manufactured conflict as it is entirely believeable to why Harry Osborn would believe that a blood transplant would save his life. I do however have no explanation for the tooth gap, that was just ridiculous.
@Michael Freed The only core issue in Peter's life that has been removed seemed to be money problems, which is also a non-issue in Tom Hollands SpiderMan. I do agree that the story about spiders having those healing genes would not necessarily lead to Spider- Man having them, but its easy to just assume that they would, yes there isnt evidence but it isn't a crazy assumption to make. Peter didn't wanna give Harry his blood because of side-effects, but also because that means that his identity could be compromised if he was to do so. It may not be a perfect explanation but for me personally it was enough. I do agree that the whole Peter has spy parents confusing plot shouldn't have been in the film, do I hate it, no, but I do think it is unnessesary. It's all about personal preference and how someone watches a movie the first time in my opinion. If someone watches the Amazing Spiderman looking for it to be closer to Toby Maguire's then they would be let down, because at the time Mark Webb decided the best way to reboot the series was to go the complete opposite direction as the original trilogy. I first watched the Amazing SpiderMan properly recently, I am in my late teens for context, and I personally feel that Andrew Garfield is more relatable and at a stretch (due to personal opinion ima say a hot take) a better written Peter Parker. That is because I think The Amazing SpiderMan has the best depiction of a teenager out of all three series. I do think that there is some bias at play, not recency bias as I have rewatched all three series over the past month, and I will admit to it but at the same time this SpiderMan means more to me than the one I grew up on (The Raimi Trilogy). The Amazing SpiderMan 2 is a shitshow, I still really enjoyed it though because my favourite storyline in any SpiderMan series is Peter and Gwen. I'm not trying to convince you to love the Amazing SpiderMan, I am just looking for you to not think it's complete garbage lol

@@lag-dan I'm pretty sure money issues is a problem, like Aunt May is struggling with two jobs if I remember rightly. On the issue of romance...off the top of my head; Liz, Betty, Gwen, MJ, Felicia, Debra, Carly, Michelle, Cissy. 616 Peter Parker has no issue attracting girls, his problem is maintaining the relationships because of his Spidey responsibilities. Which to be fair, does sort of come through in his relationship with Gwen in TASM. Unpopular Opinion but despite the first movie being meh, and the 2nd being not that great; Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker is the closest to his 616 of the live action adaptations. Accurate? no, but still the closest. Comics Peter is no where near as shy and sweet as people seem to think he is.
Loved your analysis of these two sagas, I personally love MCU Spider-Man more, but I respect the accomplishments of the Raimi saga and because I grew up with both, I love them
I know this is an unpopular opinion but I love Tom Holland's spiderman and I love these mcu movies. Don't get me wrong, I always liked spiderman and I loved the other movies as a child, but I felt the mcu version just gave so much life to him in his youthful approach and I thought it was fucking hilarious, and then you see him screaming below the rubble and he sounds just like the child he is and it gave me feelings. Now he's my son and I'll accept no other opinions 😂
Spider-Man 2 has always been my favorite, but when I came out the theater from seeing Far From Home, I have to admit, that was my favorite Spidey film (until I rewatched both 😂Spider-Man 2 is still my favorite movie of all time) but the point in case is that I recognized a lot of storytelling similarities and I think both movies complimented their predecessors well and did what they set out to do really well.
I love that you took the time to objectively understand both interpretations of Spider-Man and his world, I personally say that it is impossible to make the "definitive" adaptation because the character completely changes depending on the era of the comics that you choose to read. If I were to relate both the Raimi trilogy, Webb films and Watts trilogy a certain run of the comics I would say that the Raimi trilogy was the Lee-Ditko run from the 60s and 70s, the Webb films were the Micheline-McFarlane run from the 80s and the Watts trilogy is the Bendis-Bagley run from the 2000s. I truly hope that when you are able to, you do a Spider-Men III video comparing Spider-Man 3 and No Way Home
I've always seen the Amazing Spider-Man films more in line with the Ultimate Comics hell they even take some points from it like Peter's powers being tied to Oscorpe and even the version of Great Power and Great Responsibility.

In my opinion the MCU Spider-Man trilogy is closer in line with the Ultimate Spider-Man comics for 2 reasons, the connection to the wider Marvel universe and the tone of the films. Spider-Man has always had a link to the other superheroes but the Ultimate comics and the MCU take to another level, in both the Ultimate comics and the MCU, Spider-Man is mentored by Iron Man and Nick Fury, the villains are created due to links to other characters such as the Green Goblin formula being an attempt by S.H.I.E.L.D. to replicate the Super-Soldier serum that created Captain America. Ned Leeds in the MCU is literally Ganke Lee from the Miles Morales comics and MJ being a closed-off loner is much closer to the nerdy childhood friend rather than the outgoing party animal. To be completely honest, I like the MCU MJ and Peter romance more, and I like how the MCU feels more, I grew up loving the Raimi trilogy, and it's still amazing, I just feel the MCU is a bit of a step up.

I love and respect the raimi films, but I know I might get heat for this but while yes Mcu spiderman may have jokes in the movie, its deeper than what's on the surface level, and alot of fans focus on the funny scenes to detract and put down the mcu version. I actually love spiderman in the mcu because while yes its campy and funny, it has this balance of jokes (while some jokes don't hit) they also have the other side balance with the responsibility and Peter's Physce being attacked since his PTSD and self doubt within himself. And I appreciate it!
such a great essay! spiderman 2 is one of my favorite movies and that point of peter gaslighting mj is something i totally didn't realize he was doing, he totally did tho because once he was fine again, it's like okay let's just be together without taking into consideration her life in that moment. and ooh the point about tom holland's being about the conflict of social while tobey's is the conflict of the self is such a great way to break down their differences.
I actually disagreed on that point. The narrative of the movie itself explains it best. The OP suggests that Peter quit being Spiderman because of his desires to be normal and to be with MJ, but he didn't set out with those intentions; merely, he accepted the possibility that he COULD have those things _if he wanted them_ after he lost his powers - after trying his best to make everyone else happy and trying to do the right thing with everyone, he realized not only that he couldn't do it all but that he couldn't do any of it. Once he lost his powers, which he fought against losing, he sort of accepted his fate that he couldn't be Spiderman BECAUSE he couldn't be Peter. The second act was Peter coming to terms with the fact that wanting things for himself isn't a bad thing - that he _does_ deserve to be happy. The third act is when he finds that even though he knows what he wants and knows he can have it, he does "the right thing" and takes back up the mantle of Spider-Man - which he is now capable of doing to save Mary Jane. In the end, it's Mary Jane who decides for herself and for Peter that he can have both. "Isn't time that someone saved _you_ for a change?"
Yeah but at the same time they only reason MJ decided to get married to this guy was because she was mad at Peter and wanted to make him jealous or get back at him. Peter didn’t really gaslight her in my opinion, if anything, I’d say MJ was more toxic. She spends the whole movie messing with Peter’s emotions just because she’s mad he didn’t come to her play. First she says she’s getting married at a church, seemingly all proud about it but then she also tells Peter to KISS her while being married. Oh and she also left this man who did nothing wrong at the alter in front of his entire family just because she thought she was “ready” for Peter now. I’m sure this astronaut guy, John is really devastated and heart broken and I really didn’t like MJ

Between Spider-Man II's Peter being relentlessly stepped on and losing out in some way at the beginning of the film, and Aunt May's lines talking about how a hero may have to give up everything, even their dreams, is the whole movie in a nutshell. SM2 is still my favorite since I can still feel for Pete's plight in the beginning of the film, only to be reminded along side him of why sacrifice is part of being a hero at the end. Unlike the MCU films, the Raimi Spiderman has no backup, and no one relatable that he can go to or think of. Mary Jane left him, he can't reveal (or feels like he can't reveal) to Aunt May or Harry that he's Spider-Man. He's alone. He can't ask, "What would Iron Man do?" There is no Happy, no Ned, no Fury, and not even a Mysterio to fill the gap. All he has to go on is his memory/promise to Uncle Ben, and his own feelings and desires. He's driven to such a low point that his feelings and desires win over his drive to be a hero. Since this Spider-Man's powers were more organically based, it's symbolized in him losing his powers. For a brief moment, ignorance was bliss. However, he quickly discovers that while the world will move on, both his loved ones and himself are not impervious. There will always be the potential for danger that takes a 'Spider-Man' to stop. The line from MCU Peter to Tony in Civil War "When you can do the things that I can, but don't, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you." fits here. I find it interesting that the MCU Spider-Man will verbally describe such a thing and not quote Uncle Ben while the Raimi Spider-Man film did the opposite.
Finally someone who analyzes film that doesn't talk down at it or insult the talent on display / their audience. For some reason a lot of video essayers can be real jerks. It's funny that you do "pretentious" (or academic or whatever) analysis but at the same time come off as the least pretentious of any essay channel I've seen. I never caught the MJ gaslighting bit. SM2 will still remain one of my faves though. I struggle w/ self-esteem issues & a lot of that movie hits me on a personal level, the struggle against ones self (it esp helped me after a bad break-up). And Aunt May's speech will always get me.

I still love Tobey's Spider-Man because of what it ment for me as a child and the lessons it taught me any many others, but as a 20-year old I can see that not only am I "Growing up" with this Spider-Man but I'm finding more about myself as time moves on but so does this version of Peter. People say Spider-Man 2 is a more mature story, but even amongst the jokes being much more prominent in Far From Home, there’s more to the story than it’s given credit for. We find Peter just trying to enjoy an easy going vacation and spend some time with the girl he likes, only for the universe to almost be conspiring against him at every turn. And then suddenly Nick Fury shows up and hijacks the trip and tells him he’s going to be an Avenger now and he has little say in the matter. The film is largely about societal pressures and how they can damage one’s self esteem. Witness that Peter starts to get back into the swing of things when he meets Beck as he is the only person to just treat Peter like an equal, like Spider-Man. Not an Avenger or the next Iron Man. But then he finds out it was all a lie and his frail self esteem gets even worse when Beck traps him in that illusion where he basically tells Peter he is nothing, but a kid playing dress up. It isn’t until Peter talks to Happy, another trusted figure in his life that treats him like an equal, that Peter resolves to just be the best hero that he can be and stop Beck because that’s what Spider-Man would do.
I couldn't agree more. I also love how relatable this version of Peter. As far as I'm concerned, this is the first Peter parker who is below the legal working age for around half of his appearances. But I also love how clumsy and stupid he can be, because in real life, teenagers are clumsy and stupid.
Yes! Exactly. I find myself so much more in Holland's Peter because of his mistakes, but also his perseverance because he knows it's his responsibility. In FFH he reached a point where the whole world seemed to bear down on him, and I think so many teenagers with a lot of responsibilities can relate to that. I have been at that point where I don't feel that I am living up to something and it's just so downgrading to how I view myself, so I want to leave it all behind just for a while. People say that Spiderman is awesome bc of how relatable he is. I say that this is by far the most relatable Peter on screen, at least for people my age who have lots of responsibilities and expectations on them.
While I believe both sequels each have something going for them, Spider-Man 2 has a more concise story. While Far From Home has unnecessary plot points like Brad and Edith. Plus Peter's reason for liking MJ just seemed random. There was zero indication that he liked MJ in homecoming. In Spider-Man 2, you get where everyone's motivation comes from. They were built up from Spider-man 1. I know nothing is perfect, but in comparison of the two sequels, Spider-Man 2 is superior.
Thats pretty obvious, i love ffh but it kinda lost me in the first act, its so boring and the peter accidentally targetting Brad scene makes me so disappointed, but the rest of the movie saved it for me
Brad was just meant to be what Peter viewed as an obstacle because of his own lack of self esteem. But as we saw early on, Pete had nothing to worry about regarding Brad and MJ since MJ like him already and not Brad. As for Peter liking MJ seemingly out of nowhere, well that is how teenagers develop crushes. They aren’t always this deep thing. Sometimes they are pretty simple and the film treated their mutual liking for each other as such. EDITH was also another example of Peter believing he needs to live up to something (Tony’s legacy) that he really doesn’t. He just needs to be the best hero he can and not the one he and everyone else thinks he should be.

Then suddenly we got a time skip in between movies and now Peter has been pining for her for a while now and it feels out of nowhere. They barely talked with each other in Homecoming but then in Far from Home he knows her and makes plans around it
Personally, I've always liked MCU Spider-Man above everyone else. The Raimi trilogy just isn't really my thing. Although I do take great joy in looking at the extras, they're hilarious.
Like I said in your first videos the core of Spider-Man is still there from the comics. Mcu Spider-Man has come to terms with bens death and now he’s in a whole new world with learning to be the best hero he can be. He became a hero cuz of Ben. Overtime in the comics he became better by his own morales . He looked up to many in the comics other then Ben that helped form him. Iron man is that guy in the mcu. Raimi fans really need to stop looking at every new Spider-Man project as a adaptation of raimi’s Spider-Man and just see them as a adaptation of Spider-Man . Both are accurate at the core . Raimis are very accurate to the solo outings of being a loner. Where mcu is accurate to his team up outings were his immaturity shows and how he needs to grow. more. Holland is growing into the loner Spider-Man we all know and love. Mcu just wanted to show us something new that’s been in the comics never been seen before. Spidey in a bigger universe
I mean, it's not really even that close to the comics either tho lol. Peter and Tony ain't buddies like that. And he on the off chance rarely does team ups and prefers to work alone. Adult Peter over the many years did grow to eventually get along with other teams like Avengers, FF4, and X-Men. But when he started out he didn't get a long with a single one of em, but Daredevil. Granted you right about Spidey being in a bigger universe, but it's not played the same way in the comics. Peter isn't a bumbling immature child every time he's with another hero. Sometimes he's mature enough to even shock other heroes who don't know him and judge him far too early.

This video really did something for me. I'm going through some battles with self-worth and similar issues with a girl (probably more Tobey than Tom in that regard tbh). I've recently made some positive strives in both thanks to an amazing therapist. But so much of what you've said has resonated with me and my current predicament... The fact that it's Spider-Man too, my favourite hero since I was a kid, has put a smile on my face. Can't wait to watch these films again with new eyes! (also as the lead up to No Way Home) Anyway. Thanks for the video! Really, just wow.
This video was good because it was challenging. But after I got past the stubborn voice in my head that said, "HOW dare he?" I was open to hearing anything. Because this wasn't a value judgment. Man, I often think, "thank god I don't have homework anymore." But seeing the way you put these arguments together reminds me of the joy of fine literary criticism. Also, as an adult, I can't hear Aunt May's speech in SM2 without majorly tearing up. That never used to happen. Weird.
Great video essay I like MCU Spider-Man it's the one I'm growing up with it's my favourite adaptation of Spider-Man (I'm 10) but I love the raimi movies aswell
The funny thing about spider man is that the bad things happening to Peter are almost too relatable and you end up feeling like you're acting our the failures with him. And it makes you fall in love with the character. MCU Peter feels pressure to live up to expectations. But those expectations are to save the entire world and to fill the shoes of a man who sacrificed himself in the first and last avengers movie for his world. Best example of how the scale tears down the relate-ability is when Tobey Maguire gets hit by a pedestrian's book bag. He is peter. Getting hit in the head after dropping your stuff sucks. Cut to Tom Holland getting slammed by a train while in the costume. Maybe that's the key difference. You can have a good idea for a movie and make it work, but without truly exploring the relationship of your characters, they fall flat. No spider man has ever failed to captivate me. But some Peter Parkers don't come close.
I honestly don’t care about the expectations because far from home borrowed so many things from spider verse and Spider-Man ps4. Also, I can’t take the expectations if Peter seriously in far from home because am I supposed to believe that they actually trusted this to a 16 year old? Also, Stark made weapons in hellicarriers and cap disagreed and Stark eventually took down the project and now he made the same thing with a pair of glasses to handle satellites like the hellicarriers thus it ruins his character. Also, am I supposed to believe that fury and other desperately require Spider-Man for all of this. In the mcu movies, each member played AN IMPORTANT ROLE; not one role was focused on them. Peter’s issues in Spider-Man 2 is more relatable than this and before you call me a rami fanboy, fucking save it! I gave up on the rami series back in 2007; I am being completely fair.

The far from home movie has copied things from into the spider verse and Spider-Man ps4: a hero dies and is trying to live the mantle but learn to do it like him and not like the dead hero. The producers had no idea what to do with aunt May and de used to make her work in n a homeless shelter just like Spider-Man ps4; the only thing she is used for is how pretty she is. Uncle Ben is dead and we should see how it affects her considering she lost someone she loved deeply but in homecoming and FFH she seems unfazed by it. You would think that after figuring out Peter’s identity she would be far more overprotective than ever before because she’s already lost Ben. But no, in far from home, she is completely supportive. The whole thing with Brad was a waste of time because isn’t super obvious that the protagonist is gonna get the girl; also how the obstacle with Brad in the way of getting with MJ was super idiotic and handled poorly. The movies bring up so many jokes that aren’t even funny. What is Peter’s motivation to be a hero in homecoming? Does he want to do it because it’s the right thing or is he trying to impress Stark? Peter showed that he was definitely Spider-Man when he ditched Liz at the dance. Also, if Peter has to learn a lesson to be a hero without the suit why give the suit back to him at the end of the movie and flush that lesson right down the toilet? Spider-Man’s success is determined by his ideals and ways how he deals with his powers. Beating Green Goblin, saving lives, stopping a train, bringing down Vulture, stop crashing cars, all were done by him; the suit played no part. Also, can anyone tell us the arcs of Peter’s friends in the mcu movies besides being used as funny objects? Why is Ned always hanging out with Peter? Does Ned’s parents fight a lot causing him to always want to be with Peter? Can anyone tell me who Ned is besides being the annoying one who is supposed to be funny? If I was a child, I wouldn’t care about any of this because at that age, I wouldn’t care about story arcs and why a character does what they do; I just want to see the action. Being older, I am out of that retarded mindset and really care about the writing and how the story is told. So many people argue who is the best Spider-Man for stupid reasons. SR Peter Parker: His power was too much of a strain on his personal life. The responsibility of Spider-Man was trampling over his responsibility as Peter Parker. Therefore, the internal conflict within himself was far too much for him. Shutting himself out of his power, therefore allowing himself to compare and contrast the responsibilities of both Peter Parker and Spider-Man, until he realized that he could be a hero as both(Via defeating Doc Ock not as Spider-Man vs Doctor Octopus, but Peter Parker and Doctor Otto Octavius defeating "Doc Ock"). MCU Peter Parker: Understandably wants to take a break from Spider-Man not long after his latest mentor/father figure literally sacrificing himself to save the entire universe from a mad genocidal maniac, but being strong armed into fighting elemental monstrosities, despite many other component heros existing, AND a seemingly competent character fighting said monstrosities, all for the sake of plot.

This might be the best video essay on the Raimi films and the MCU films. Sometimes I think you're a bit too down on the Raimiverse but, then I realize that's just the movies themselves. The notion that "sometimes to do what's right we have to give up our dreams" is itself rather, I don't know but, as I get older I realize more and more that the concept in the Raimi films that Peter can't have a life outside Spider-Man and anytime he tries it only ends in disaster is just... not what I think of when I think of Spider-Man. I still love the Raimi films, I think they were the perfect first and second movies for Spider-Man but, I really wish the third film had ended on a note of Peter finding balance between his personal life and his life as Spider-Man, something a bit more uplifting.

I wish the dialogue in FFH was better. The scene where Peter and Happy are talking about Peter not living up to Tony. The entirety of FFH and parts of Homecoming. Due to how society in the MCU treats it's heroes, Peter has only ever known the "good" Tony has done. Learning a snippet from Vulture, but Happy could've really laid everything down on Peter. How Tony nearly got Happy, and Pepper dead multiple times, how his fear was the reason for Ultron, and the reason he was really there in Civil War. It should've been an in-depth realization that Peter doesn't need to be the next Iron Man (The next big hero) instead we get vague, boring, and generic "Tony was a mess" without details.
I grew up with Spider-Man 2. Best superhero movie as a kid and a classic now. FFH is modern, in the MCU I don’t like it’s stark tech he made his new suit. I like it but don’t like that it stark tech. I like FFH has spider sense & swings in the last scene of the film. Spider-Man 2 > FFH > The amazing Spider-Man 2.
Not this one specifically, but I wonder with video essays like these about movies, if they're overthinking it and the writers were just writing on autopilot to just make an action movie. Like do they plan and think about it as much as the essay people dive into it. Like an artist putting a single dot on a canvas knowing that people would by it. Because someone will look at that dot and say it's a story about the Holocaust or it represents today's government.
I am not a huge mcu Spider-Man fan, these videos help me understand, and I realize why he is the way he is, it fits the story being told. I just want more personal connections in growth. Specifically with MJ, Aunt May, and Ned.

Black Ninja a dramatic shift in tone. The first two films were more the same, safe, kid-friendly flicks but Prisoner pushed the franchise in a much darker and mature setting.

Lanky Lanxx I think the problem is in the fact that if ur trying to make a contesting point, it requires information to back it up. I can easily say MCU Spidey is modern and goofy rather than grounded. Not to say there aren’t moments where it is grounded. There are several instances where that’s very much true, but Far From Home is arguably more goofy than grounded. Raimi’s Spidey is mature, campy, and *grounded*. At the end of the day, yes they are opinions but if ur going to make a stronger case then it’s required for u to provide context and information to back up ur claims. Ur opinion becomes very much well rounded and is difficult to argue against as it’s understood that it is a well thought out opinion and not a point to contest. As u can see my perception of these iterations is different from urs and feels easy to oppose.
kk den I think the problem is in the fact that you believe I’m trying to make a contesting point...I’m not here to debate opinions which I feel I’ve made clear if you read my last response in the thread, I feel as though that should’ve been made clear. My point is regardless of opinions it isn’t necessary to shit on one movie due to favouritism for the other as both versions are great in their own ways. Spider-Man the character has been around for almost 60 years with multiple interpretations and iterations in comics, cartoons and live action adaptations, no one can give a factual claim to one definitive version, only their preferred ones. If you feel the movies differ from each other in a different way than I claimed, cool but that’s still not the actual point I was making let alone a “contesting point”.

@Michael Freed I would like to respectfully disagree with those points brought up. Granted Andrew Garfields interpretation of the wall crawler doesnt have money problems, extreme issues with women or the fact that anyone could be spiderman like many fans relate to/like about Peter Parker but I genuinely believe the Amazing SpiderMan was possibly the best live action spiderman film. On the issues with women point, he definuitely has some, any scene with Gwen until the end of the first film he is a stuttering anxious mess. I would say that is having issues with women in my opinion. Andrew has issues in the series, anxiety, lonliness, trauma due to loss, awkwardness around girls he's attracted to, anger issues, ptsd. These are quite relatable, and if not, at least reasons to like him, granted they are flaws but it's what makes him human. My personal issue with the Toby Maguire and Tom Holland films is that Peter Parker feels more 2 dimensional comparative to Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker. He is cocky, an asshole, vengeful, immature, awkward, selfish, ignorant, has long lasting trauma caused by his parents and Uncle Ben's death and clearly has anxiety of some descriptions. But he is also heroic, he looked out for the little guy even before he got his powers. He is kind, smart, caring. That doesnt mean he is perfect. SpiderMan isnt meant to be perfect. SpiderMan is meant to be relatable. SpiderMan is a teenager. Despite these blatant flaws, Peter grows, he becomes responsible, mature, empathetic. He doesn't have to worry abou this dual life with Gwen because Gwen was his best friend, his only friend after Ben passed. He doesn't think about the risk that may put Gwen in at that point in time because he hadn't had to face anything he couldnt handle. There are different ways to interperet Peter Parker, he doesnt have to be one set character type, this version of Peter Parker, Mark Webb's interpretation, is honestly truly amazing once you lift biases from previous films about the beloved web slinger.
And they did explain why Harry thought that SpiderMan's blood would save him. He had a genetic disease that was going to kill him, like it did with his father. His father tried everything to save himself and failed, and documented it all for Harry. In said documents it shows a video explaining the experiments done by Richard Parker on Spider DNA potentially allowing people to self-heal damaged cells, like a spider. This is not a manufactured conflict as it is entirely believeable to why Harry Osborn would believe that a blood transplant would save his life.
I do however have no explanation for the tooth gap, that was just ridiculous.
@Michael Freed The only core issue in Peter's life that has been removed seemed to be money problems, which is also a non-issue in Tom Hollands SpiderMan. I do agree that the story about spiders having those healing genes would not necessarily lead to Spider- Man having them, but its easy to just assume that they would, yes there isnt evidence but it isn't a crazy assumption to make. Peter didn't wanna give Harry his blood because of side-effects, but also because that means that his identity could be compromised if he was to do so. It may not be a perfect explanation but for me personally it was enough. I do agree that the whole Peter has spy parents confusing plot shouldn't have been in the film, do I hate it, no, but I do think it is unnessesary. It's all about personal preference and how someone watches a movie the first time in my opinion. If someone watches the Amazing Spiderman looking for it to be closer to Toby Maguire's then they would be let down, because at the time Mark Webb decided the best way to reboot the series was to go the complete opposite direction as the original trilogy. I first watched the Amazing SpiderMan properly recently, I am in my late teens for context, and I personally feel that Andrew Garfield is more relatable and at a stretch (due to personal opinion ima say a hot take) a better written Peter Parker. That is because I think The Amazing SpiderMan has the best depiction of a teenager out of all three series. I do think that there is some bias at play, not recency bias as I have rewatched all three series over the past month, and I will admit to it but at the same time this SpiderMan means more to me than the one I grew up on (The Raimi Trilogy). The Amazing SpiderMan 2 is a shitshow, I still really enjoyed it though because my favourite storyline in any SpiderMan series is Peter and Gwen.
I'm not trying to convince you to love the Amazing SpiderMan, I am just looking for you to not think it's complete garbage lol

Which to be fair, does sort of come through in his relationship with Gwen in TASM.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I love Tom Holland's spiderman and I love these mcu movies. Don't get me wrong, I always liked spiderman and I loved the other movies as a child, but I felt the mcu version just gave so much life to him in his youthful approach and I thought it was fucking hilarious, and then you see him screaming below the rubble and he sounds just like the child he is and it gave me feelings. Now he's my son and I'll accept no other opinions 😂

Spider-Man 2 has always been my favorite, but when I came out the theater from seeing Far From Home, I have to admit, that was my favorite Spidey film (until I rewatched both 😂Spider-Man 2 is still my favorite movie of all time) but the point in case is that I recognized a lot of storytelling similarities and I think both movies complimented their predecessors well and did what they set out to do really well.

I love that you took the time to objectively understand both interpretations of Spider-Man and his world, I personally say that it is impossible to make the "definitive" adaptation because the character completely changes depending on the era of the comics that you choose to read. If I were to relate both the Raimi trilogy, Webb films and Watts trilogy a certain run of the comics I would say that the Raimi trilogy was the Lee-Ditko run from the 60s and 70s, the Webb films were the Micheline-McFarlane run from the 80s and the Watts trilogy is the Bendis-Bagley run from the 2000s. I truly hope that when you are able to, you do a Spider-Men III video comparing Spider-Man 3 and No Way Home
I've always seen the Amazing Spider-Man films more in line with the Ultimate Comics hell they even take some points from it like Peter's powers being tied to Oscorpe and even the version of Great Power and Great Responsibility.

In my opinion the MCU Spider-Man trilogy is closer in line with the Ultimate Spider-Man comics for 2 reasons, the connection to the wider Marvel universe and the tone of the films. Spider-Man has always had a link to the other superheroes but the Ultimate comics and the MCU take to another level, in both the Ultimate comics and the MCU, Spider-Man is mentored by Iron Man and Nick Fury, the villains are created due to links to other characters such as the Green Goblin formula being an attempt by S.H.I.E.L.D. to replicate the Super-Soldier serum that created Captain America. Ned Leeds in the MCU is literally Ganke Lee from the Miles Morales comics and MJ being a closed-off loner is much closer to the nerdy childhood friend rather than the outgoing party animal. To be completely honest, I like the MCU MJ and Peter romance more, and I like how the MCU feels more, I grew up loving the Raimi trilogy, and it's still amazing, I just feel the MCU is a bit of a step up.

I love and respect the raimi films, but I know I might get heat for this but while yes Mcu spiderman may have jokes in the movie, its deeper than what's on the surface level, and alot of fans focus on the funny scenes to detract and put down the mcu version. I actually love spiderman in the mcu because while yes its campy and funny, it has this balance of jokes (while some jokes don't hit) they also have the other side balance with the responsibility and Peter's Physce being attacked since his PTSD and self doubt within himself. And I appreciate it!

I actually disagreed on that point. The narrative of the movie itself explains it best.
The OP suggests that Peter quit being Spiderman because of his desires to be normal and to be with MJ, but he didn't set out with those intentions; merely, he accepted the possibility that he COULD have those things _if he wanted them_ after he lost his powers - after trying his best to make everyone else happy and trying to do the right thing with everyone, he realized not only that he couldn't do it all but that he couldn't do any of it. Once he lost his powers, which he fought against losing, he sort of accepted his fate that he couldn't be Spiderman BECAUSE he couldn't be Peter.
The second act was Peter coming to terms with the fact that wanting things for himself isn't a bad thing - that he _does_ deserve to be happy. The third act is when he finds that even though he knows what he wants and knows he can have it, he does "the right thing" and takes back up the mantle of Spider-Man - which he is now capable of doing to save Mary Jane. Yeah but at the same time they only reason MJ decided to get married to this guy was because she was mad at Peter and wanted to make him jealous or get back at him. Peter didn’t really gaslight her in my opinion, if anything, I’d say MJ was more toxic. She spends the whole movie messing with Peter’s emotions just because she’s mad he didn’t come to her play. First she says she’s getting married at a church, seemingly all proud about it but then she also tells Peter to KISS her while being married. Oh and she also left this man who did nothing wrong at the alter in front of his entire family just because she thought she was “ready” for Peter now. Between Spider-Man II's Peter being relentlessly stepped on and losing out in some way at the beginning of the film, and Aunt May's lines talking about how a hero may have to give up everything, even their dreams, is the whole movie in a nutshell. SM2 is still my favorite since I can still feel for Pete's plight in the beginning of the film, only to be reminded along side him of why sacrifice is part of being a hero at the end. Unlike the MCU films, the Raimi Spiderman has no backup, and no one relatable that he can go to or think of. Mary Jane left him, he can't reveal (or feels like he can't reveal) to Aunt May or Harry that he's Spider-Man. He's alone. He can't ask, "What would Iron Man do?" There is no Happy, no Ned, no Fury, and not even a Mysterio to fill the gap. All he has to go on is his memory/promise to Uncle Ben, and his own feelings and desires. He's driven to such a low point that his feelings and desires win over his drive to be a hero. Since this Spider-Man's powers were more organically based, it's symbolized in him losing his powers. For a brief moment, ignorance was bliss. However, he quickly discovers that while the world will move on, both his loved ones and himself are not impervious. There will always be the potential for danger that takes a 'Spider-Man' to stop. The line from MCU Peter to Tony in Civil War "When you can do the things that I can, but don't, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you." fits here.
I find it interesting that the MCU Spider-Man will verbally describe such a thing and not quote Uncle Ben while the Raimi Spider-Man film did the opposite.
As much love as I have for the MCU Spidey films, I absolutely hate, hate, *HATE* the term "Peter Tingle".
Finally someone who analyzes film that doesn't talk down at it or insult the talent on display / their audience. For some reason a lot of video essayers can be real jerks. It's funny that you do "pretentious" (or academic or whatever) analysis but at the same time come off as the least pretentious of any essay channel I've seen. I still love Tobey's Spider-Man because of what it ment for me as a child and the lessons it taught me any many others, but as a 20-year old I can see that not only am I "Growing up" with this Spider-Man but I'm finding more about myself as time moves on but so does this version of Peter.

People say Spider-Man 2 is a more mature story, but even amongst the jokes being much more prominent in Far From Home, there’s more to the story than it’s given credit for. We find Peter just trying to enjoy an easy going vacation and spend some time with the girl he likes, only for the universe to almost be conspiring against him at every turn. And then suddenly Nick Fury shows up and hijacks the trip and tells him he’s going to be an Avenger now and he has little say in the matter. The film is largely about societal pressures and how they can damage one’s self esteem. Witness that Peter starts to get back into the swing of things when he meets Beck as he is the only person to just treat Peter like an equal, like Spider-Man. Not an Avenger or the next Iron Man. But then he finds out it was all a lie and his frail self esteem gets even worse when Beck traps him in that illusion where he basically tells Peter he is nothing, but a kid playing dress up.
It isn’t until Peter talks to Happy, another trusted figure in his life that treats him like an equal, that Peter resolves to just be the best hero that he can be and stop Beck because that’s what Spider-Man would do.
I couldn't agree more. I also love how relatable this version of Peter. As far as I'm concerned, this is the first Peter parker who is below the legal working age for around half of his appearances. But I also love how clumsy and stupid he can be, because in real life, teenagers are clumsy and stupid.
Yes! Exactly. I find myself so much more in Holland's Peter because of his mistakes, but also his perseverance because he knows it's his responsibility. In FFH he reached a point where the whole world seemed to bear down on him, and I think so many teenagers with a lot of responsibilities can relate to that. I have been at that point where I don't feel that I am living up to something and it's just so downgrading to how I view myself, so I want to leave it all behind just for a while.
People say that Spiderman is awesome bc of how relatable he is. I say that this is by far the most relatable Peter on screen, at least for people my age who have lots of responsibilities and expectations on them.

While I believe both sequels each have something going for them, Spider-Man 2 has a more concise story. While Far From Home has unnecessary plot points like Brad and Edith. Plus Peter's reason for liking MJ just seemed random. There was zero indication that he liked MJ in homecoming. In Spider-Man 2, you get where everyone's motivation comes from. They were built up from Spider-man 1. I know nothing is perfect, but in comparison of the two sequels, Spider-Man 2 is superior.
Thats pretty obvious, i love ffh but it kinda lost me in the first act, its so boring and the peter accidentally targetting Brad scene makes me so disappointed, but the rest of the movie saved it for me
Brad was just meant to be what Peter viewed as an obstacle because of his own lack of self esteem. But as we saw early on, Pete had nothing to worry about regarding Brad and MJ since MJ like him already and not Brad.
As for Peter liking MJ seemingly out of nowhere, well that is how teenagers develop crushes. They aren’t always this deep thing. Sometimes they are pretty simple and the film treated their mutual liking for each other as such. EDITH was also another example of Peter believing he needs to live up to something (Tony’s legacy) that he really doesn’t. He just needs to be the best hero he can and not the one he and everyone else thinks he should be.

Mcu Spider-Man has come to terms with bens death and now he’s in a whole new world with learning to be the best hero he can be. He became a hero cuz of Ben. Overtime in the comics he became better by his own morales . He looked up to many in the comics other then Ben that helped form him. Iron man is that guy in the mcu. Raimi fans really need to stop looking at every new Spider-Man project as a adaptation of raimi’s Spider-Man and just see them as a adaptation of Spider-Man . Both are accurate at the core . Adult Peter over the many years did grow to eventually get along with other teams like Avengers, FF4, and X-Men. But when he started out he didn't get a long with a single one of em, but Daredevil. Granted you right about Spidey being in a bigger universe, but it's not played the same way in the comics. Peter isn't a bumbling immature child every time he's with another hero. Sometimes he's mature enough to even shock other heroes who don't know him and judge him far too early.

This video really did something for me. I'm going through some battles with self-worth and similar issues with a girl (probably more Tobey than Tom in that regard tbh). I've recently made some positive strives in both thanks to an amazing therapist. But so much of what you've said has resonated with me and my current predicament... The fact that it's Spider-Man too, my favourite hero since I was a kid, has put a smile on my face.

This video was good because it was challenging. But after I got past the stubborn voice in my head that said, "HOW dare he?" I was open to hearing anything. Because this wasn't a value judgment. Man, I often think, "thank god I don't have homework anymore." But seeing the way you put these arguments together reminds me of the joy of fine literary criticism.
Also, as an adult, I can't hear Aunt May's speech in SM2 without majorly tearing up. That never used to happen. Weird.

Both movies were great and actually both better than their predecessors
The funny thing about spider man is that the bad things happening to Peter are almost too relatable and you end up feeling like you're acting our the failures with him. And it makes you fall in love with the character. MCU Peter feels pressure to live up to expectations. But those expectations are to save the entire world and to fill the shoes of a man who sacrificed himself in the first and last avengers movie for his world. Best example of how the scale tears down the relate-ability is when Tobey Maguire gets hit by a pedestrian's book bag. He is peter. Getting hit in the head after dropping your stuff sucks. Cut to Tom Holland getting slammed by a train while in the costume. Maybe that's the key difference. You can have a good idea for a movie and make it work, but without truly exploring the relationship of your characters, they fall flat. No spider man has ever failed to captivate me. But some Peter Parkers don't come close.
I honestly don’t care about the expectations because far from home borrowed so many things from spider verse and Spider-Man ps4. Also, I can’t take the expectations if Peter seriously in far from home because am I supposed to believe that they actually trusted this to a 16 year old? Also, Stark made weapons in hellicarriers and cap disagreed and Stark eventually took down the project and now he made the same thing with a pair of glasses to handle satellites like the hellicarriers thus it ruins his character. Also, am I supposed to believe that fury and other desperately require Spider-Man for all of this. In the mcu movies, each member played AN IMPORTANT ROLE; not one role was focused on them. Peter’s issues in Spider-Man 2 is more relatable than this and before you call me a rami fanboy, fucking save it! I gave up on the rami series back in 2007; I am being completely fair.

So, giving a 16 year old a highly deadly satellite is already a terrible idea and has Tiny StRk completely out of character because in captain America winter soldier, Iron man made helli carriers that are like the EDITH satellite but eventually shut the stuff down but dies the same thing in far from home. The far from home movie has copied things from into the spider verse and Spider-Man ps4: a hero dies and is trying to live the mantle but learn to do it like him and not like the dead hero. The producers had no idea what to do with aunt May and de used to make her work in n a homeless shelter just like Spider-Man ps4; the only thing she is used for is how pretty she is. Uncle Ben is dead and we should see how it affects her considering she lost someone she loved deeply but in homecoming and FFH she seems unfazed by it. You would think that after figuring out Peter’s identity she would be far more overprotective than ever before because she’s already lost Ben. But no, in far from home, she is completely supportive. The whole thing with Brad was a waste of time because isn’t super obvious that the protagonist is gonna get the girl; also how the obstacle with Brad in the way of getting with MJ was super idiotic and handled poorly. The movies bring up so many jokes that aren’t even funny. What is Peter’s motivation to be a hero in homecoming? Does he want to do it because it’s the right thing or is he trying to impress Stark? Peter showed that he was definitely Spider-Man when he ditched Liz at the dance. Also, if Peter has to learn a lesson to be a hero without the suit why give the suit back to him at the end of the movie and flush that lesson right down the toilet? Spider-Man’s success is determined by his ideals and ways how he deals with his powers. Beating Green Goblin, saving lives, stopping a train, bringing down Vulture, stop crashing cars, all were done by him; the suit played no part. Also, can anyone tell us the arcs of Peter’s friends in the mcu movies besides being used as funny objects? Why is Ned always hanging out with Peter? Does Ned’s parents fight a lot causing him to always want to be with Peter? Can anyone tell me who Ned is besides being the annoying one who is supposed to be funny? If I was a child, I wouldn’t care about any of this because at that age, I wouldn’t care about story arcs and why a character does what they do; I just want to see the action. Being older, I am out of that retarded mindset and really care about the writing and how the story is told. So many people argue who is the best Spider-Man for stupid reasons. Some say Tobey for stupid nostalgia and some say Garfield and Holland for no other reason but that they are good looking. Really? Saying they are better because these stupid girls want Garfield and Holland web fluid in their pussies? SR Peter Parker: His power was too much of a strain on his personal life. The responsibility of Spider-Man was trampling over his responsibility as Peter Parker. Therefore, the internal conflict within himself was far too much for him. Shutting himself out of his power, therefore allowing himself to compare and contrast the responsibilities of both Peter Parker and Spider-Man, until he realized that he could be a hero as both(Via defeating Doc Ock not as Spider-Man vs Doctor Octopus, but Peter Parker and Doctor Otto Octavius defeating "Doc Ock").
MCU Peter Parker: Understandably wants to take a break from Spider-Man not long after his latest mentor/father figure literally sacrificing himself to save the entire universe from a mad genocidal maniac, but being strong armed into fighting elemental monstrosities, despite many other component heros existing, AND a seemingly competent character fighting said monstrosities, all for the sake of plot.
Aside of being dragged along by Fury by a leash, that's not even the part that gets me tight. It's how he really allowed Beck to just outplay him on the level that a teenager outplays a toddler. Literally taking candy from a baby.

This might be the best video essay on the Raimi films and the MCU films. Sometimes I think you're a bit too down on the Raimiverse but, then I realize that's just the movies themselves. The notion that "sometimes to do what's right we have to give up our dreams" is itself rather, I don't know but, as I get older I realize more and more that the concept in the Raimi films that Peter can't have a life outside Spider-Man and anytime he tries it only ends in disaster is just... not what I think of when I think of Spider-Man. I still love the Raimi films, I think they were the perfect first and second movies for Spider-Man but, I really wish the third film had ended on a note of Peter finding balance between his personal life and his life as Spider-Man, something a bit more uplifting.

I wish the dialogue in FFH was better. The scene where Peter and Happy are talking about Peter not living up to Tony. The entirety of FFH and parts of Homecoming. Due to how society in the MCU treats it's heroes, Peter has only ever known the "good" Tony has done. Learning a snippet from Vulture, but Happy could've really laid everything down on Peter. How Tony nearly got Happy, and Pepper dead multiple times, how his fear was the reason for Ultron, and the reason he was really there in Civil War.

I grew up with Spider-Man 2. Best superhero movie as a kid and a classic now. FFH is modern, in the MCU I don’t like it’s stark tech he made his new suit. I like it but don’t like that it stark tech. I like FFH has spider sense & swings in the last scene of the film. Spider-Man 2 > FFH > The amazing Spider-Man 2.
Not this one specifically, but I wonder with video essays like these about movies, if they're overthinking it and the writers were just writing on autopilot to just make an action movie. Like do they plan and think about it as much as the essay people dive into it.
Like an artist putting a single dot on a canvas knowing that people would by it. Because someone will look at that dot and say it's a story about the Holocaust or it represents today's government.
I am not a huge mcu Spider-Man fan, these videos help me understand, and I realize why he is the way he is, it fits the story being told. I just want more personal connections in growth. Specifically with MJ, Aunt May, and Ned.

personally i prefer the original spider man live actions mainly because i grew up with them but i have nothing against the new ones i believe Tom Holland did and is doing an amazing job and he plays the role very well i definitely like far from home better than homecoming but i do dislike that there is no uncle ben and he was essentially replaced with iron man
